I have a theory about an ongoing message board activity here ...
I think the people who visit this board enjoy seeing GCHokie34 spar with his "haters." I get almost zero complaints about the back-and-forth when he gets into it with people. Me personally, although it gets contentious, neither side (GC or everyone else, haha) gets personal or violates the board terms of use, at lease not egregiously so. I don't see any posts of the "You're a stupid (xxxx)hole" variety. And I enjoy reading both sides of the argument. Gives me food for thought. That said, sometimes behavior that is bad for the boards does NOT get reported, and instead people just tolerate it silently, or just leave (which is worse). So, what say you, board denizens? ** Edited by Will Stewart at 3/25/2025, 2:26:20 PM ** Edited by Will Stewart at 3/25/2025, 8:23:13 PM

I absolutely stay away from this board because of GC34. Absolutely.
His attitude towards Anyone who disputes him is condescending. I won’t go on. But I could. He’d be better on the Recruiting Board to dole out his “scoops”. They’re somewhat helpful. But everything else he overbearingly hits folks over the head with is worthless.

I enjoy GC's posts a lot though he seems a bit holier than thou sometimes.
Fans have a right to express their opinions, even if those opinions are from left field, and in my opinion those who donate have an even greater right. Coaches get paid a TON of money and they need to get thicker skins. I have an ESPN acquaintance who interacts with tons of college coaches and he told me he has never met a coach who takes criticism well.

I find interest and value in his general takes, but I find the……
…..sparring with the haters tiresome and don’t really get any value from those threads. I know just scroll right past them. His posts about possible portal prospects are the most interesting things he provides.

I appreciate his input. He often is myopic in his views. But that’s fine
We all know that. So his opinions are taken with a grain of salt. Instead of blinded by science he is blinded by basketball. That being said he is an extreme Mike Young supporter. I love Mike Young but the last few years have not been good.

Thanks for asking. I like the realistic perspective that GCHokie34 brings.
When a thread gets "too much," I stop reading that thread, but don't leave the board. TSL has said it wants to make fans more knowledgeable - these back and forths help that. If making that learning curve public gets a little contentious, I think we can handle it.

Very much appreciate the kind words all around
Sorry to hear some people get a bad read from me, but I understand why they do A little context might help those people...or not, people are welcome to their opinion of me. When I was coaching I really bristled with the hate the coaches got while watching from the bench. Obviously none of it was ever pointed at me, but I was struck with how people felt as though the decisions made were easy and how blind the HC was for not seeing it like they did. I had a very poor opinion of the fan bases that were supporting our team, feeling they were uneducated, hateful and simply wrong in their opinions. I realized that they played a huge part in our success, however, and that the majority were way on the other side of the spectrum to support us no matter what happened. And how that positivity ultimately led to creating an environment that helped push us to the NCAA Tournament at Akron. I also realized whether they hated the coaches or loved the team, they paid money to see us perform, so verbally confronting them was never on the table. Their dollars helped us do the things with the program we wanted to do. I also saw some false narratives make more than a few of my colleagues/friends lose their jobs when they moved to higher profile jobs. So I took note of that and always felt like their opinion would be different if they understood the reasoning behind the decisions that were made But...now I'm on the other side of it. I'm also a fan. But I'm a fan with all of the above context. My goal has always been to educate the Virginia Tech fan base so they could be better than the less educated fan bases I had seen at other places. I have always been drawn to Vermont and their fan base because of their knowledge of the game and how genuinely terrifying that was as a coach that they were so ij tune with what was needed that it made it feel like you were playing against thousands of them as well. So that's always been the goal. Not to say that the coaching staff always makes the right call...they don't. And they're going to make calls that turn out to be good that I don't agree with, and they're going to make calls I don't agree with that turn out to be wrong...but I've always seen the logic in what they've decided so I understand where they're coming from and what I'm expressing is the logic with which they're making a decision, whether it's what I would do or not. Finally, understanding the importance of a narrative, I tend to bristle still when a false narrative takes shape that could affect the lives and jobs of staff members. So I will always shout those down. Always. And I'm not gonna apologize for it. I'll happily take become the target of their ire in exchange for the majority understanding the lack of logic behind the narrative. As a human, I hate that I can be perceived that way. But I feel it's one of the ways I can affect some positivity for the program as a fan. If you ever see me in person and we've verbally sparred, feel free to say hello and I promise we will have a positive interaction. But I'm still going to do what I can to make sure people know the logic of decisions made and that people understand there are real human people with families that they complain about and want fired. To end on a positive note, I always know that the negativity is a very small portion of the fan base just as it is on this message board. The majority of people want to know more and learn and have an actual discussion. As such, a small minority is never going to chase me away from the boards. Will and Chris have also created an environment on the boards (as well as through email and their actions) that have made this place the most positive and informed community that I know of, so I will lean on that in any negative interactions. Genuinely, if you have appreciated my words at any point I'm glad you felt that way and thank you for being open to that message. If you don't appreciate me or our interactions, I hate to hear that and I'll see what I can do to make those exchanges better. But I'll do it all through the context of my life experience, just as we all do!

In addition @GCHokie34 , standing your ground and defending it
is a virtue. It's something to be proud of, not shy away from l coached a little HS ball, nothing to speak of, so I know what it's like to take incoming and have to restrain comment. Hell, I know it from just posting on this board, but that's beside the point. What I love about your posts is the passion. That above all separates you from the naysayers, not to mention you're almost always right. I too miss RevZekeVodka, and wish he would return. Don't lose your patience with us, but, please don't lose the passion.
G
GCHokie34
I agree, and I will stand my ground when I feel strongly about a topic...
I find myself thinking often that if people saw me in my day-to-day they would be shocked I dint have very strong opinions on many things and don't like to comment on things I don't really know about. But they're catching me on a message board where the literal center of a Venn Diagram of my interests happen to be (Virginia Tech, basketball, athletes rights)...so my opinions on the topics are usually fully formed before shouting them into the ether. I feel like I try to do a good job of saying up front when I don't know about something if I'm asked a question, and I'll continue to do that. But I'll draw from experience to try and give an idea of how I've seen things handled in similar circumstances. And I'll continue to do that as well.

Will - I just love the quality of GCHokie34’s posts. I may be in the minority here but I don’t know his background but as a reasonable person I instantly recognize his acumen. I'm sure some in here have me on mute and that's perfectly fine. I
can be obnoxious occasionally. The few that want to argue with GC are positive they know more about the sport of basketball, and specifically, VT basketball. It's cathartic to them for some reason, so they want the rest of the board to see them as the ultimate go to person with VT men's basketball. Have I thought about hitting the abuse spot? Yes, but I always thought if things get too out of control, you or CC will TCB. I for one enjoy GC, the Rev. when he stops by and most posters. We all have one major thing in common: Seeing, and if possible, financially assisting VT basketball, and obviously all VT sports, rise to a national level. Hope my tiny opinion offers a bit of insight to this board. ( BTW, a huge shout-out to all the TSL staff for making this board top of the line!! Great source of VT athletics information.)

Don't think I've ever used the Report Abuse button unless it was Reciprocal
Haha - he was an awful person. Back in the good ole UWS days, he would say some egregious stuff. Lost his composure many times and went nuts. But he was from Chapel Hill so not surprising. Almost had a beer with him but then was worried he would follow me home. It's a free message board for fanatics to share their opinions. Everyone is welcome. Not everyone wants to be corrected on every opinion (that's what wives are for). It's tedious. I genuinely enjoy diverse opinions. I friggin hate the repetitive non-sense about Pedulla, Buzz, etc. As soon as it quiets down, someone peels the scab, as if they enjoy the board spiraling into Twitter-like ****posting. Not many of us coached - certainly not at the D1 level. But many of us did play the game. And we fill the seats and earn the right to our opinions, right or wrong. For the most part, we are all Hokie grads that share a love for our university, Blacksburg, and basketball. That's the common bond here that keeps it civil. Naturally, we are protective of our university - even against the admin like Whit. And I feel most people here want VT and their sports programs to be successful. To suggest otherwise is pretty awful. I can imagine that certain coaching circles have a disdain for fans. It makes their jobs more difficult, impacts their livelihood, and they naturally protect their players. It's apparent that we have a few here that feel compeled to remind us of how much disdain they have. It's just bizarre to come here amongst Hokie alum and fans, mock Blacksburg as the Siberia of college towns, and call others "mouth breathers" or "low IQ", and then claim the high ground. The "haters" use awful words like "inconsistent" or "guru". One of these days, you'll meet each other at a tailgate. ** Edited by WildTurkE at 3/25/2025, 5:48:30 PM ** Edited by WildTurkE at 3/25/2025, 5:55:24 PM

I appreciate GC's insights, and I miss RevZekeVodka's. Personally, my opinion (as I prepare to duck)..I think GC gets a bad rap on here. I've gathered he's a former D1 staff member/assistant (multiple stops), he's mentioned he worked at Radford and I'm a fan of RU and their hoops program. And GC goes back to time around CSG in some capacity. He's still connected and I trust his evaluations - whether I agree or disagree as a longtime hoops fan is irrelevant to me. Both he and particularly other posters coming at him could tone it down a bit but I never feel like it crosses a line or the TOS. I just hope he keeps it comin..

GC's posts are extremely knowledgeable and most TSLers that I know greatly
appreciate it. I'm not sure why other posters attack GC at all, and from what I read it appears to be mostly others that initiate attacks, and sure GC will defend himself. But the main thing is I hope TSL won't let other posters run off our gurus, just like I hope TSL won't let posters run off our VT players or coaches either. VT's coaches, players and admin read TSL boards so moderating the boards to eliminate hoos, trolls and those who personally attack VT coaches, players, and admin (and GC) is important.

As a former coach I agree with a lot of what GC says.
GC gets frustrated with constant negative posters about Coach Young. I don’t agree with everything Coach does but he has definitely forgotten more about basketball than I will never know. But, there is no one way to coach. What works at one game doesn’t work in another. You can run the same offensive play 5 times and it could work 2 out those plays. This would be considered a success 40% of the time. . Go Hokies

The VT fanbase isn't highly educated about college hoops
GC does a great job answering questions, educating and sometimes "telling it like it is" Our fanbase needs voices that aren't afraid of the hard truths and GC is a great example of that. For what it's worth, the TSL staff is very good at those hard truths as well.
