Full compensation, he has made more money in 5 years than what it would take the average USPS worker 15 years to do. Is "go where youre needed, not just where youre wanted" If you are relied upon for minutes then 2 things happen: 1) your development is directly tied to the success of the team/coach/program. You will be given every opportunity to improve and develop. 2) the vast majority of mistakes made on the basketball court are only fixed through experience. Not practice experience. Not individual workouts. Game experience. Being relied upon to work through your issues while playing makes you better. If you want to be the best possible basketball player you can be, go somewhere youll be on the floor as soon as possible. If you want to tell your friends you went to the highest level possible, then settle for your highest offer. But dont be surprised when the unranked recruit goes to Belmont and ultimately makes it to the NBA while you sat the bench for 3 years

Camden had good qualities that weren't able to be used until he developed the ability to stay on the floor (i.e. defend well enough to not get exposed) and that VT could only wait so long before he developed those traits Tyler Nickel coming to VT was a nail in the coffin for Camden because they were the same player but Nickel did the things Camden does at a higher level. It wasnt a matter of Camden was always going to be a bad player, it was that he didn't develop in the timeline needed and VT needed to move on...much like Patrick Wessler. Camden moved on to a place where he could play through his mistakes it made him a better player.

You can then decide to pool that money and try to gain access to a short few higher tier players and have depth issues or you can spread the money around and have top end talent issues. But for the women, they don't need to make the same concessions. Their losses are marginal in comparison to their peers so if they make some good evaluations it could be as though they didnt lose much funding at all (or it could be detrimental if they do make mistakes in evaluating talent...like everyone else)

Who dont fund their programs Women's basketball (much like all non-rev sports) is a matter of which schools choose to fund the sport VT does well in wrestling because not nearly as many fully fund the sport Coastal Carolina chooses baseball Akron chooses soccer But in sports where everyone funds the bare minimum at least (i.e. football and mens basketball) being at the bottom levels of that funding makes talent acquisition difficult Hope this helps

Then they obviously would be immune to that sort of changeover. But some other things can impact those decisions even if youre doing the best you can given the resources...the biggest one being age. MY is close enough to retirement age that dumping money into the program even in a best case scenario will only yield short term results and then you have to make a new hire anyway. So is James Franklin in it for the long haul at VT? If not, do you want to be making football and basketball hires at the same time? Absolutely not. Miss on either one of them and it could tank your whole tenure. So if it doesnt make sense to ramp up funding for the basketball program just to make a new hire in a couple years, then the best path (for the AD, certainly not for the program or for MY) is to reduce funding for the basketball program, make it difficult to win, then have a conversation about retiring or stepping down when they inevitably have middling results. The previous admin saw this as the path forward and pulled out the resources they had promised so they could sell this strategy to prospective ADs. It could get real ugly if MY were to have a big year this season with reduced resources making it less popular to push him out. You'd have to give him a cushy landing spot and a long term role in administration just to convince him to move on. Then you'd have to push resources to basketball to hire a new coach and ramp up the efforts to ensure that hire worked. All while needing to feed James Franklin. The most likely outcome is MY outcoaches his resources but it does not lead to an NCAAT bid. He obviously would be doing enough to keep his job but they will work out a deal to pay him in an admin role and "retire" for a reasonable price.

He obviously cant replace Franklin anytime in the next 3 years unless Franklin willingly leaves. Whit Babcock turned over football within his first 2 years. He turned over basketball a couple months after he was hired. White replaced basketball at FAU in year 1. He replaced football in year 2 (but in a similar situation where he inherited Lane Kiffin so he obviously wasnt going to fire him, so he made his mark on basketball). Thats just how it works. New AD comes in and someone from the revenue sports is on the chopping block, and it wont be the guy they just hired. So...

He comes from a basketball family. Whether that family informed his basketball hires (Dusty May came from his brother's staff) or he made the hires himself, he did a good job there and identified the next big thing in Dusty May. Its 100% writing on the wall for Mike Young and I hate that its going to end this way for him. But im less pessimistic about the future of the program than I was pre-hire. All of that is just speculation until the dollars actually show up, however. But it is good to know that since he didn't hire James Franklin, his hire he will be attached to will be the basketball one, making it more likely he puts resources there to get it right. I also like the fund-raising aspect of his background, so that could help bridge some gaps. Was expecting it to be a football dog-on-a-leash but came away cautiously optimistic for the future...just not the current state of things

They had a core of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes and David Lee. Three very good players but who lacked the toughness it would take to be consistently good. They added Andrew Bogut who helped some, but couldnt stay on the floor. Enter Draymond Green. He made the Warriors revolutionize NBA basketball with their "Death Lineup" with Harrison Barnes at the 4 and Green at the 5. Green did all the dirty work that kept teams from bullying Curry and Thompson much like Rodman for Kukoc, Kerr and Luc Longley. Was Draymond out of line often? Yes absolutely. Was he often dirty? Yep, for sure. Was he still necessary and integral to the Warriors becoming a dynasty? Yes, unequivocally. No player of Draymond Green's skill level should be in the conversation of 4 titles and a max contract. But Green made himself so important to their success that being without him was more expensive than paying him more than hes "worth"

They could be released after Summer League and there isnt a penalty. So you look for elite traits and try to make the rest of the product serviceable. Draymond Green, for instance...2nd round pick. He did a lot of things ok, but he was an animal defensively, had wingspan greater than his height, could score at a serviceable level and the Warriors felt like they could teach him to shoot since hed be the person on the floor with the space to do so He turned that into a max deal, multiple championships and a long career. Not bad for a guy who cant shoot or dribble

Is about projection and potential rather than production and who you are right now If you possess an elite skill or ability you are infinitely more valuable to an NBA team than someone who is good at 2 or 3 skills and below average at the other skills. This is even more true if the elite skill or ability you possess is a physical one (i.e. being 7'10, having an 8 ft wingspan, etc) because you can teach a lot of things, but you cant make someone taller, longer, or jump/run considerably higher/faster For Lawal, he has elite athleticism. If a team is confident enough they can turn him into a serviceable shooter/passer, then he genuinely could become a steal as he gets into his mid to late 20s. I have reservations that anyone could do that, but that is the line of thinking. Whether or not Lawal is drafted will hinge solely on whether a team feels like they can build the motor skills to a serviceable level. If someone comes into the NBA at 7'5 but cant do anything at a serviceable level then theyre worthless. But if they can learn to shoot well enough and/or move well enough to make it worth having him on the floor theyre much more valuable than someone who is 6'8 with the same skill level. Same for Lawal here. Cattoor had committed to Wofford and followed MY to VT. When he played at VT some people cited him as having "Wofford-level players" Which was always an insane assertion considering 3 of the better players VT has had in the last 7 years were from Wofford (Cattoor, Aluma and Murphy)

I hope they go 12-0, 16-0 and never lose a game from now until an asteroid takes us all out. I went to every home football game every year I was at VT and most bowl games. Ive been to far more football games as a spectator since graduation than basketball. Justin Fuente, Brent Pry et al have done nothing personal to me. Played flag football for years with a former VT football player and would trust him with my son's life. Genuinely nothing but positive interactions with anyone ever associated with VT football. What I have always been incredulous about is that VT has continually funneled money to a failing football program under the same guise now as it was 20 years ago...that somehow it will generate money for basketball. Thats simply not reality. To add on to that, its one thing to not drive funds to the basketball program...I think its shortsighted in terms of dollar growth, but its at least a defensible decision. What ISNT defensible is actively taking resources FROM basketball (the only pther sport with any ability to generate revenue) to prop up a football program that has done literally nothing with the increased resources and actively went backwards. It isnt sound financially, it isnt sound strategically but most importantly it isnt sound logically. As far as enjoying football success...are we counting a Spring Game as a win? Is football season here and I dont know it? There was optimism around both Fuente and Pry (even touting Pry's bulge in his pants as some omen he will be a good coach)...Fuente even won some games early on James Franklin has zero wins. And even though I share the optimism that hes definitely the guy for the job, I dont think the basketball funds taken would move the needle either way for a team who hopefully will win more than they lose but wont be a national player (which is expected in year 1 of course)

I think VT got exactly what they wanted with their HS recruit in that he has measurables and skill that they wont need to teach If he picks up the team aspects of the game then he could be a tremendous steal. If he doesnt, then he is closer to Brett Freeman, in being someone who has measurables and skill but not quite the understanding needed to develop into getting playing time. Its tough, because if it were me, someone like Freeman and this kid should go elsewhere to play and refine their skills through experience. But obviously its better for VT if they sit and develop when its their time. I dont blame VT for taking a shot, certainly. I dont blame the kid for wanting to play at a HM. I hope he works out

His wingspan is very long comparative to his height so he likely plays like he is 6'8 anyway
