Well MY has his work cut out for him in 2026-27: VT's 6 person transfer
Class ranks 16th in in ACC 247 rankings. Uva 17th has class off just 3 and Stanford 18th class of 1. If you go by avg player rank, VT's 87.60 is better than Wake, BC, GT, which would put them 15th. VT does have a strong returning 3some in Hansberry, Hammond, and Johnson, not sure how those returning starters compare to the rest of the ACC. VT's highest rated 247 transfer is Curry with an 89, Hiede 88, Atak 87, Elohim 87 Saiga 87. Interestingly - 247 has Gurdak and Dorn as 90s Shutt 88. Maybe not in football, but in MBB MY will either be like Beamer and do more with less - the little engine that could, or be the little engine that can't !

Dorn at 90 is laughable. He averaged a foul per min played.

Here are some thoughts on the “floor” of this team…
Not hard IMO to see this team as quite a bit better than our team of 2 seasons ago. Not a high bar but a good comparison for the doom and gloomers… Hammond way better than himself as a Fr and way better than Soph Rech. Jr Tyler way better than Fr Tyler Not hard to envision the sum of our other wings being at least as good as Young and Schutt that year. Hansberry better than Jr Lawal. Not hard to imagine our 5s being better than Poteat. So we got that going for us…

Yep, injuries. The floor may not be where we thought it would be.
Which can cause even more injuries. ** Edited by KCHokie2 at 5/24/2026, 9:31:21 PM

This is the correct assessment. Likely better than 2 years ago. But as you
mention, that's not saying much. I think we will struggle defensively, especially at G. We are losing Bedford who was our best bet against strong opposing guards, even if they were the PG. Elohim had never been a defensive player. And if Curry and Hammond are both on the floor at the same time we are going to struggle against anyone with bigger guards.

Are you seeing Hansberry still recovering from injury to start the season?

no. CMY will play 2 bigs at the 5 as long as they can offer positive
minutes. There are no 5's in your predicted starting line-up. Will that line-up ever be on the floor together? Probably but not often unless those five match-up better on defense against a few teams.
NC Hoke NC Hoke

Not starting, but you could see that line up in a 4 out offense, although
it would more likely be with Heide at 5 and Atak at 4 while Hansberry is resting or in foul trouble.

No most think Hansbury will play 90% of minutes at the 4 spot. Heide Saiga
Will split time at 5 not sure who starts.

I would bet (and very much hope) that Hansberry does not start or.....
play much at the 5 spot and Atok backs him up. I'd guess Heide starts at the 5 just based on experience and let's all hope Sagnia develops quickly. Absolutely agree on the backcourt.

Hard to believe our starting center averages 5 ppg and 4 rbg
I hope Sagnia gets a lot of playing time. Methinks he has a higher ceiling than Heide. ** Edited by YBYSAIAHokie at 5/23/2026, 9:50:41 PM

In about 19 minutes a game.
I look for Heide to start at 5, being a good defender and our most experienced big. I think his numbers will come up with increased minutes, which could be 30+ minutes a game unless we sign another experienced 5 or Sagnia steps up (which could happen). I can’t envision Atak guarding 5’s in the ACC. I’m hoping he can guard 4’s. He’s very thin, needs to get stronger and doesn’t have much experience either. He has a long frame though and is a good 3 point shooter. But not sure who he can guard.

That's about what VT's 5 averaged last season.

Those are Gurdak's stats. Between him, Hansberry and Dorn I'd guess....
VT got about 12 points and 8 rebounds per game out of the 5 spot. ** Edited by vtbball80 at 5/24/2026, 7:11:17 PM

Every year I believe VT will create newer, smarter fans.. I’m always wrong
Between my brother and I we have degrees from VT, UNC, UF, and UMich.. Without a doubt the critical thinking of the average online Hokie is in the basement compared to the other 3 schools. MY has assembled a roster through the portal that fits exactly what he’s had success with in the past. He’s brought in 3 players who shoot better from deep on volume than the guys they replace. He’s swapped unathletic big men for ones who crash the boards and block shots. He retained the only 3 guys on the team who showed the ability to play against upper tier talent. We have two legitimately proven PGs for the first time since 2007. We have a bottom of the barrel budget yet somehow found guys who play the exact roles we need which are shooters, scorers, rim protectors, rebounders, screen setters, and ball handlers. ** Edited by soflahokie at 5/23/2026, 12:35:03 AM

Ever meet “Subway Irish” or the average PSU fan
I know so many who never matriculated 1 credit hour but bleed those school’s colors and are completely unreasonable (may my beloved mother-in-law who had PSU season FB tickets for decades rest in peace. Was she a duesy!). Things were bad enough in the before times but social media has supercharged everything.

I hope you are correct. This year the parts rated higher than the whole.
Next year maybe MY has parts/pieces that don't overwhelm, but together the whole will be greater than the individual parts.

lmao You obviously have NEVER read a UF 247 message board!! Some of the
most absolutely mindless clowns I've seen on any message board. And they're at the top of the SEC fan food chain. UNC? Even their basketball boards are full of "fans" that couldn't explain where Chapel Hill is located" with a roadmap.

This will be interesting to see
This is the first time CMY does not have a real offensive threat at the 5. He will need to restructure his offense a bit. This team likely plays better up tempo, which is also a change. I believe this team can be respectable.

Did 247 watch us play last year? I love Gurdak and respect Dorn and Schutt
but those are questionable rankings.

247 is basically a CBS afterthought. Their rankings for the transfer portal
are even worse than their HS player rankings.

This roster, using last year’s ppg from their various teams, shows
Tech“returning” over 90 points of scoring. I realize I’m taking some liberties here. Maybe I’m being too optimistic, even for me, but I think this will be a better squad than last year. The talented circus acts have moved on and the blue collar overachievers have moved in. Play ball.

Dorn as 90?? LOL!! Rivals/ON3 has VT's transfer class ranked 33 out of 194
teams, with 3 four stars. Which one is more accurate? Your doom and gloom could be correct, or dead wrong. No one will know until fall. BTW, CMY put this class together with a shoestring budget. And he may not be finished.

Not blaming CMY…
But this team will be in the bottom half of the ACC.
NC Hoke NC Hoke

If the talent is really that low, I’m more glad than ever CMY is
coaching them. But I think he’s done a good job this cycle of retaining his best talent and building around them with good players who will compliment his 3 top returners. Competing in the top half of the ACC would not surprise me. I’m not making any predictions either way except I am expecting to see another competitive team from CMY.
