Virginia Tech Future Basketball Schedules Updates:


  • 7/9/26: Virginia Tech women's basketball is playing in the Emerald Coast Classic in November. Plus, details on other non-conference games — UNC Greensboro, Campbell and College of Charleston for the women; Mount St. Mary's and Richmond for the men.
  • 6/25/26: Virginia Tech and West Virginia men's basketball announce a future three-game series. They'll play in Blacksburg in 2026, Morgantown in 2027 and Charleston, W.Va., in 2028.
  • 6/23/26: Virginia Tech men's basketball will meet Iowa in Sioux City, Iowa, on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Tyson Events Center.
  • 6/5/26: ESPN announced the matchups for the 2026-27 SEC/ACC Challenge. The Virginia Tech men drew Ole Miss while the women will host Tennessee.
  • 5/22/26: John O'Connor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports Richmond will play at Virginia Tech in 2026-27. The programs last met in the regular season in 2009. The date is to be determined.
  • 5/18/26: Mark Berman of the Roanoke Times reports the Hokies will pay Radford $50,000 to visit Cassell Coliseum on Dec. 13, 2026.
  • 5/6/26: Tech Sideline reports five Tech women's basketball games for 2026-27: North Carolina Central, Delaware, James Madison, La Salle and Appalachian State.
  • 4/2/26: The D1 Docket reports four Hokies men's basketball games for 2026-27: Nov. 3 vs. Coppin State ($95k), Nov. 27 vs. Old Dominion ($95k), Dec. 10 vs. Maryland Eastern Shore ($90k) and Dec. 21 vs. VMI ($90k). 
  • 12/4/25: On Tech Talk Live, Mike Young said the Hokies have an agreement to play in the 2026 Charleston Classic during Feast Week, though the documents might not yet be signed. It's also a two-game tournament now as opposed to a three-game one when Virginia Tech last participated in 2022-23. "We all enjoy the port city a lot," Young said.
  • 7/31/25: As part of the Virginia Tech-Old Dominion contract negotiations for the football series, the Hokies and Monarchs will meet in men's basketball in Blacksburg no later than 2027-28. Tech is paying ODU $95,000 for the game.
  • 7/3/25: Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports Virginia Tech will host in-state foe George Mason on Saturday, Dec. 6, in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies and Patriots have only met twice — in the 1991-92 season. GMU was 27-9 (15-3 A-10) in 2024-25 and was paced by two Tech transfers in Jalen Haynes and Darius Maddox.
  • 7/2/25: Rocco Miller reported that the Hokies will host Elon in a non-conference contest on Saturday, Dec. 20, in Cassell Coliseum. It'll be the 21st meeting between the programs and the first since 2008.
  • 6/12/25: ESPN announced the 2025 ACC/SEC Challenge opponents. Virginia Tech men's basketball will travel to South Carolina on Dec. 2 while the women's program will host Florida on Dec. 4. The Hokies' game vs. Providence was also officially announced.
  • 5/28/25: The ACC announced league opponents for the 2025-26 season. The Hokies will face Virginia and Wake Forest twice each and see everyone else once, with the exception of Pitt, who they won't play.
  • 5/22/25: Mark Berman of Roanoke Times reports Virginia Tech will play Providence in Uncasville, Conn., at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Nov. 8. Arranged by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, it'll be the first meeting between the Hokies and Friars since February 2004 when Tech was a Big East member.
  • 3/28/25: Tech Sideline obtained contracts for three of Virginia Tech's non-conference games for 2025-26: Charleston Southern, Western Carolina and Maryland Eastern Shore. It also provided details on the Hokies' participation in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
  • 10/4/24: Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports Virginia Tech will participate in the Battle 4 Atlantis in 2025-26 in Paradise Island, The Bahamas. Though the tournament's timeline has yet to be announced, it will likely take place from Nov. 26-28, Wednesday-Friday over Thanksgiving, as it has in years past. It'll be the Hokies' second-ever trip to The Bahamas and the first since they beat Mississippi State 88-57 there on Dec. 18, 2010.
  • 7/18/24: The Hokies release their 2024-25 non-conference schedule. They'll open the season against Delaware State on Monday, Nov. 4.
  • 7/10/24: Virginia Tech announces it'll play Michigan in the first round of the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Monday, Nov. 25. They'll meet South Carolina or Xavier in the second round on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
  • 7/9/24: Made For March reports Virginia Tech will host Winthrop on Monday, Nov. 11. The Eagles are guaranteed $90,000 to come to Blacksburg for the game.
  • 6/24/24: It's officially announced Virginia Tech will face Saint Joseph's at The Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa., on Saturday, Dec. 21. 
  • 6/12/24: ESPN announces the 2024-25 ACC/SEC Challenge matchups. The Hokies will host Vanderbilt on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
  • 4/18/24: The D1 Docket reports Virginia Tech will host Navy on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024, in a non-conference game in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies will pay the Midshipmen $90,000 for the game.
  • 3/28/24: The D1 Docket reports Virginia Tech will play Penn State in a neutral-site game in Baltimore, Md., on Friday, Nov. 15, 2024.
  • 2/29/24: Now an 18-team conference with Cal, SMU and Stanford, the ACC announces the 2024-25 conference schedules for men's and women's basketball. The Hokies will play Clemson, Miami and Virginia twice and every other team in the conference once, either home or away.
  • 11/20/23: Virginia Tech announces it is participating in the Fort Myers Tip-Off in November 2024. Michigan, South Carolina and Xavier are the other three teams in the event, which is set to take place from Nov. 25-27, 2024.
  • 7/11/23: Mark Berman of the Roanoke Times reports two new Virginia Tech men's basketball games in 2023-24: Nov. 14 vs. Campbell and Dec. 9 vs. Valparaiso. It'll be the Hokies' sixth all-time meeting with the Fighting Camels, the first since 2011, and the first-ever clash with the Beacons.
  • 6/29/23: Rocco Miller reports Virginia Tech will host Wofford on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023, in Cassell Coliseum. It reunites Mike Young and his former program, which he built over 17 years. It'll be the first meeting between the Hokies and Terriers since 2002 when Young & Wofford beat Tech in Blacksburg.
  • 6/28/23: ESPN announces the matchups for the 2023-24 ACC/SEC Challenge, which replaces the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Virginia Tech will travel to Auburn on Wednesday, Nov. 29.
  • 6/2/23: Rocco Miller reports Virginia Tech will host American on Friday, Dec. 22 in Cassell Coliseum. It'll be the first meeting between the Hokies and Eagles since 2002.
  • 5/26/23: Rocco Miller reports Virginia Tech will open its 2023-24 season in Cassell Coliseum on Monday, Nov. 6 vs. Coppin State. It's the fifth all-time meeting between the Hokies and Eagles.
  • 5/11/23: ESPN announces Virginia Tech is part of the 2023 ESPN Events Invitational at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. The tournament will take place on Nov. 23, 24 and 26.
  • 2/22/23: Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports announces Virginia Tech and South Carolina will meet in a Veteran's Day doubleheader in the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. on Nov. 10, 2023.

  • 6/2/16: The Hokies will play at Michigan in the 2016 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
  • 4/1/16 (Not an April Fool's joke): per this tweet by Jon Rothstein, VT and Ole Miss schedule a home-and-home. First game in Blacksburg in 2016-17, return game in Oxford in 2017-18.
  • 2/12/16: The ACC announces basketball matchups for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.
