Making it to the NBA (especially in the 2nd round)

Is about projection and potential rather than production and who you are right now If you possess an elite skill or ability you are infinitely more valuable to an NBA team than someone who is good at 2 or 3 skills and below average at the other skills. This is even more true if the elite skill or ability you possess is a physical one (i.e. being 7'10, having an 8 ft wingspan, etc) because you can teach a lot of things, but you cant make someone taller, longer, or jump/run considerably higher/faster For Lawal, he has elite athleticism. If a team is confident enough they can turn him into a serviceable shooter/passer, then he genuinely could become a steal as he gets into his mid to late 20s. I have reservations that anyone could do that, but that is the line of thinking. Whether or not Lawal is drafted will hinge solely on whether a team feels like they can build the motor skills to a serviceable level. If someone comes into the NBA at 7'5 but cant do anything at a serviceable level then theyre worthless. But if they can learn to shoot well enough and/or move well enough to make it worth having him on the floor theyre much more valuable than someone who is 6'8 with the same skill level. Same for Lawal here. He is more valuable than other people with all the skills (and even more skills) that he has because of what is possible with building his skill level ** Edited by GCHokie34 at 6/16/2026, 9:13:04 PM

Mock draft has Tobi Lawal going @53 to Houston in second round of draft.**

Awesome. Rooting for him.**
GoldCoast 06/19/26 08:30 AM ET
That’s wild! He’s a poor shooter, poor passer, average defender
AnotherTechW 06/16/26 05:34 PM ET
You can teach a guy to shoot/score. You can't teach him to jump
hoosnowahokie 06/19/26 09:04 AM ET
Actually it's not much easier to teach those things either.**

There’s a lot of NBA players like Tobi; super athletic

Players like Tobi Lawal face a narrow NBA pathway
Pride_and_Joy 06/18/26 04:10 PM ET
He's uber athletic, but he's not a natural basketball player**

I saw little appreciable change in his basketball skills from '24-'25
marcbvtgm 06/22/26 03:00 PM ET
His skill level from VCU to VT increased significantly...
GCHokie34 06/22/26 06:06 PM ET
Yep, for the most part 2nd Round in the NBA are teams taking flyers
Vippie1 06/17/26 11:28 AM ET
Correct...2nd round isnt a guaranteed contract
GCHokie34 06/17/26 01:19 PM ET
I feel the average casual college basketball fan
Vippie1 06/17/26 02:13 PM ET
NBA has far fewer roster slots. And arguably more int'l talent than MLB**
marcbvtgm 06/22/26 03:16 PM ET
He can also throw a good punch against opponents and teammates alike ...
vt90 06/17/26 01:42 PM ET
Draymond Green was exactly what the Warriors needed...
GCHokie34 06/17/26 02:03 PM ET
Green also donated a few million $$ to Michigan State
UpperQuad 06/17/26 06:14 PM ET
Agree 100% - my comment was actually a compliment in basketball terms and
vt90 06/17/26 02:08 PM ET
Still better than Arn Anderson. He had average size, average speed,
KCHokie2 06/16/26 07:15 PM ET
And Ole Anderson**
UpperQuad 06/17/26 01:55 PM ET
No above average defender with his shot blocking and rebounding.**
BigDaddyHokie 06/16/26 05:45 PM ET
Not even avg D. Good rebounder, but otherwise a D liability.
marcbvtgm 06/16/26 08:36 PM ET
Really hope he makes it!
EDGEMAN 06/16/26 08:41 AM ET
Most of these guys end in D league or Europe.**
HoakieBS 06/16/26 02:45 PM ET
But maybe he can get an injunction to play next year?!**
HoakieBS 06/16/26 06:10 PM ET
Nah, he didn't bet against VT**
ancient alien 2018 06/16/26 06:58 PM ET
Touche! Well played!**
