Posting History (258)

GC/Cville/Rev, who in college coaching today does β€œmore w/ less” the best?

Based on your understanding/hunch what their rev share and NIL budgets are, can you name some that more often than not overachieve and β€˜figure out’ how to win in spite of less than ideal $$? I guess I’m more curious at P4 level b/c obviously there’s a company of mid major coaches that do it. And I’m assuming you’d put CMY on this list somewhere, I’m interested in other names..I’m not posting this fishing for CMY replacements, just genuinely curious since clearly VTMBB is in the camp of having to win with limited resources.

It was nice to see Tyler Johnson last night tho

Only 8 minutes but when he's on the floor he's just involved in so much it seems like, such a heady player..3 rebounds which would translate to double figures if playing 30 or so minutes. If we are destined for the NIT (I hope not), having him back as another piece I think gives us a better shot to make a run and win games there as opposed to the first round exits in recent years.

"Zone defense is all that's worked in the past, and it's all that'll work..

this year." One of the townspeople to new Hickory Head Coach Norman Dale, "Hoosiers" Lol it was right after the minister leaned in and asked him "tell me..do you believe in man to man, or a zone defense?" and Dale just giggled. Side note: some of us thought Neo was gonna be our Jimmy Chitwood this year.

I've always wondered about this

I too remember Buzz saying CMY was a top 5 offensive coach. I thought it came up on Tech Talk LIve somehow. Anyway, it was late in Buzz's VT tenure..it's almost as if Buzz knew he was leaving (tic) and was somehow trying to plant the seed for VT to have an easy replacement for him.

^^^This. Mike had $ this year, I don’t know how much compared to Miami

I have to believe some of this $230mil will go to MBB and we should have even more starting next year, I’m just not convinced at this point that CMY is the right coach to do something with it. I am sick and tired of NIT bids.

I know it’s not the metric that matters, but we drop 10 spots in kenpom

BTW don’t be shocked if FSU finishes reg season with 17 wins, their remaining schedule is all very winnable the way they’re playing - only ? mark is at Clemson but they would have won at Clemson playing the way they did today.

Even Charlotte back in Nov was a lot closer than should have been

Providence, South Carolina and Colorado State wins really not as impressive as we once thought bc they haven’t gone on to great seasons…couldn’t finish at Wake, SMU or against Stanford. There’s just not much toughness in this team. This goes well beyond just missing Tyler Johnson at this point..

Why do you suppose MBB has quit responding?

Is that a CMY thing? Stephanie Ballein? Or the SID over MBB? Obviously Mike has done the podcast (pre-season) and all in all seems like he'd be very accomodating. Is it just a this time of year thing/middle of stretch run of season that they're not accomodating?

I used Brownell moreso b/c of the program comparison VT to Clemson

And maybe it's not a fair one..but J Weaver used to say we compared most favorably to Clemson from an athletics standpoint and I tended to get his point. I do get your point on Brownell 16 years in now, and 4 full recruiting cycles. So MY is halfway there presumably. What did Brownell figure out after those first 7 years that they started to really have consistency? Clemson obviously stuck with him. (tic) One NCAA tournament in 7 years?! Well that sounds almost VT-like (tic). It reminds me of the debate on Coach Pry. It was said well Dabo didn't win his first 4-5 years either, THEN he caught fire on recruiting and it all started to come together. If you or others think MY continues to be the right coach at the right time for VT, I get that. But an argument can be made well we've got money to spend now. I just feel like programs like Vandy, as long as they keep Byington (given what he's showing he can do at a high level), have a better chance to be in the NCAAs most years going forward. Willard at Nova - I don't know that he can win a natty there, but I like his track record to at least have them back in the tournament year in year out. Buzz will have Maryland back in the NCAAs a couple years in a row then he'll leave for elsewhere of course. I hope MY can catch fire next 5 years and cement his legacy, it's just the history of doing so isn't there.

You may not like comparisons I dunno but is MY a better coach than Brownell

How is Brownwell doing it? I'd kill to have the kind of momentum his program has right now. Solidly in the NCAA tournament 3 years running now. His tenure at Clemson started very similar to Mike's at VT - first 7 seasons, 2 NITs and one NCAA at-large (NCAA his first year actually, I'm assuming largely with Oliver Purnell's players/recruits). I imagine comparing Coach A to Coach B is extremely subjective. All one can do is go Bill Parcells and say well your record says what you are. Jim Weaver used to say VT most favorably compared to Clemson as peer institution athletically so it seems a fair place to start. I just don't understand why if they can do it there, why not hope for same at VT? If Dabo's football natties somehow helped basketball, well, we just committed $230mil to athletics over 4 years, doesn't that make us more attractive assuming MBB gets some of that $$ to work with? ** Edited by HokieSA at 2/9/2026, 1:15:47 PM

NBC gets a pass bc on what they’re dealing with on Savannah Guthrie story

What I mean is, she pulled out of anchoring..I think Craig Melvin did too. They’ve had to scramble talent into different spots. Personally I give them a pass if off to a rocky start ** Edited by HokieSA at 2/7/2026, 5:12:15 PM

I thought you could just tell Schutt didn't have it last night

Just an off night. Cattoor had those, every shooter has em at some point. Just hope we don't have Saturday.

100% agree..I fear Duke's interior will really limit him Saturday

Maybe he can snag a few boards but as good as his scoring game has been in the post, not sure he'll get much opportunity against them. We shall see!

CMY is a good coach, not great IMO

Great coaches don’t have only 1 at large worthy resume in 6 seasons. I don’t discount the ACC tourney championship but that team was not making the NCAA tourney as an at large had they not won. And sadly we are barreling toward yet another miss on March Madness. The committee isn’t going to give us credit for close losses. They are losses. ** Edited by HokieSA at 1/15/2026, 8:19:53 AM

GC question..CMY said postgame radio we're playing good ball, not great

How do you get a unit to start playing better than good up to great? Is it shot selection? Better defense creating offense? Can we get there without Johnson and Dorn? (hopefully for not much longer)

CMY said couple weeks ago they may not sign a high schooler (transcript)

From TSL Tech Talk Live transcript I think two Wednesdays ago: β€œWe may not take a high school kid this year. We want to do a great job of retaining what we have. I like our roster. Schutt’s got another year. Hammond and Johnson both have two. Will we take a high school kid? Probably in the spring. There are a lot of really good high school players still available. There’s a lot, like us who aren’t beating the pavement for high school kids in the fall. You need to see how the senior year plays out and what’s available in the portal. We’re in great shape. I think the health of our roster is quite good. Getting Hansberry back will be a big deal. It’s changed dramatically. I don’t even recognize it from five years ago, certainly 10 years ago. It’s the hand we’ve been dealt, we have to make the most of it.”

No one has said publicly. Lower body was CMY’s words

It’s been opined here on the boards some sort of stress fracture but nothing official to my knowledge.

Yes pure. How you’d teach a youngster to shoot it

I believe he was Mr Illinois in basketball so definitely a high level player

Skinn is a rising star coach

As CMY said on TTL, had to really rebuild roster and lost leading returning scorer..but if we’re not sharp today we can easily lose this one.

I assume it helped they got home, practiced a few days w/o Tobi

In the Bahamas him being out all of a sudden after game 1, with weird game times etc the next two days, they didn’t have much of a chance to practice without him and figuring out other personnel rotations etc. IF can beat Mason Saturday (will not be easy), good chance to be 11-2 with conference play starting 12/31.

S Car will be tough...G Mason will be very tough Saturday

Mason will come to Blacksburg really fired up, and oh by the way they're pretty good too. I really won't be surprised if we lose those next two, particularly if we have more injuries outta nowhere.

Wofford 5-3 now..good for Coach Giltner

Given late timing of him taking over etc., they seem to be a decent mid major. And not a senior on their roster according to KenPom.

GREAT story..and not that those youngsters cared, but remember the program

was not in great shape despite Frankie Allen's success that year. He was interim off the tough situation with Coach Moir resigning basically on the eve of that season starting. And Coach Allen would be given the job but not work out in later years. Still, Allen's team that year with the "55" full court press and up tempo pace were fun to watch.

I remember Bimbo was named Dick Vitale's POTW the following week

Back then it was such a big deal to get mentioned by him...it was called the Windex Award or something like that.

I agree..frankly I thought he looked better 2nd half versus 1st

Obviously the whole team did as they adjusted at halftime..but Neo looked more confident to me once he got that first 20 minutes of American college ball out of the way.

SIR how would you assess Neo's all around game?

It looked like he got more comfortable as the game went along, he tried to create a lot..2nd lowest offensive rating for the game per KenPom (Pasha lowest). I assume he'll have better nights than 1-6 from 3. Do you want him shooting that many threes and how about defensively also...?

I've loved and am re-assured by everything you've posted..my concern

about quality wins tho is this..I hear you on the opportunity to get some in the back of the schedule, the ACC slate. But I feel like the way the system is setup for programs like us is - the ACC is not the SEC of B1G, there simply aren't as many Q1 opportunities as those two leagues get (last year)..so we HAVE to win some of these OOC games in Nov and Dec. I don't know where Providence is gonna wind up in the NET, St. Joe's, Colorado State, St. Mary's (if we see them), S Car, Mason..but I feel like we have to win several of those for the "resume" and when chemistry takes a month to form, when we don't get those W's. Talk me off the ledge please on the scheduling front when it comes to having an at large-worthy resume. I just don't like how the system leading to Selection Sunday at larges is setup where it favors programs like ours that -tend- to be on the bubble every year at best.

Re: #10, Greenberg watched a recent practice and said this about Pasha

β€œPasha, he’s figuring it out right now. He’s a downhill, play-to-contact driver. You can get away with that in the CAA. It’s not easy to get away with … in the ACC. But he’s really talented.” (Seth Greenberg to Mark Berman, Roanoke Times) ** Edited by HokieSA at 10/27/2025, 12:03:20 PM
