Too many freshmen these days are either one-and-dones or rentals
that will transfer as soon as they have good stats for a higher bid

CMY said couple weeks ago they may not sign a high schooler (transcript)
From TSL Tech Talk Live transcript I think two Wednesdays ago: “We may not take a high school kid this year. We want to do a great job of retaining what we have. I like our roster. Schutt’s got another year. Hammond and Johnson both have two. Will we take a high school kid? Probably in the spring. There are a lot of really good high school players still available. There’s a lot, like us who aren’t beating the pavement for high school kids in the fall. You need to see how the senior year plays out and what’s available in the portal. We’re in great shape. I think the health of our roster is quite good. Getting Hansberry back will be a big deal. It’s changed dramatically. I don’t even recognize it from five years ago, certainly 10 years ago. It’s the hand we’ve been dealt, we have to make the most of it.”

crazy isn't it
Tis the world now. Why bother? Unless your Duke, Kentucky and maybe a half dozen others you are better off being old and gray and experienced. I suppose most of the HS players outside the top 75-100 now will start out at mid majors and based on merit progress to the P5 schools. CMY is definitely going to need to bulk up again on NIL to keep those existing players in the fold. Hoops needs a better solution- multi-year commitments or something, but this is where we are now. A bit off topic but I think one thing the NCAA may have to eventually come to grips with with unlimited international scholarships- particularly the older ones eating into D1 spots for Americans. I could see a push for limits , quotas coming somewhere down the line.
