@HOO86
Heard one I had not heard before, that when the exit fees get settled in the ACC, that the SEC will take Clemson, UNC, NCSU and probably Duke. On the other hand the B1G is going to take FSU, Miami, Virginia and Virginia Tech. I know two out of the four are not AAU, but I have heard the two that aren’t, are very close to getting AAU status.
I’m not saying this is going to happen, but I did hear this, and wanted to know if you have heard this too?

UNC will probably to the SEC, especially if FSU doesn't. This is a bit path dependent, but that's the beginning catalyst to the process. UNC wants UVA, but is locked with NCSU.
Step 1
FSU allocated to B10
UNC to SEC
Step 2
NCSU goes with UNC
I'm not sure where Clemson goes
Then you have piece of turf in VA that is unclaimed. Someone will claim it, but will they take UVA and VT together?
Does the VT administration want the SEC over the B10 if they had the choice? I have doubts - sadly!
I could also see us going to the SEC and UVA to B10.
I think of this as choosing sides for shirts/skins bball.
FSU and UNC get picked first. Maybe down the road SEC takes Clemson and gives VT/UVA in exchange.
I would think that one of SEC or B10 would grab a VA presence.
That's how this gets sliced up.
I'm not sure how much the SEC wants Clemson. I could also see Clemson going B10 and UNC, NCSU and VT/UVA ending up in the SEC. The VT/UVA and Clemson landing spots seem a bit fluid.
What you posted seems plausible.

So many people saying they would not take Florida State because they already have a team in Florida. Of Course this scenario does have them taking Clemson to add to South Carolina. However, even considering a third team in North Carolina for the SEC sounds ridiculous.

of it. They seem like they have as many students from New Jersey or China as they do from North Carolina. They are a top 4 - if not THE top basketball brand. Basketball will become a huge revenue source once March Madness gets stripped from the NCAA, so grabbing Duke makes a lot of sense if you look to the future. UNC is very valuable and I think they get a bit impaired if they don't have Duke in their conference for regular season basketball games. That's also why I think the SEC might make a play for Kansas as well.

shot, but possible because the ACC according to Sankey needs to build basketball more than football. That’s the best rated rivalry in college basketball, so it’s plausible.

and are the most likely team to take the DMV for the SEC at least in football. But so much of what is going to happen is not something VT has any control over. It is very possible that if UNC can get free of NCSU then they would want UVA trying to compete in the DMV and not us.
VT to the SEC is a longshot.

Being a member of the secret society of the AAU isn’t even necessary for B1G membership. Since no one outside of the “club” has any idea of what the criteria for AAU membership is or even if a criteria exist at all, how would anyone know if a school is close to becoming a member or not?
I have heard absolutely nothing about VT going to the B1G. I have heard absolutely nothing about an invitation from the AAU being issued to VT.

He knows the facts as much or more about Virginia Tech, and has proven it over decades. Also inside the Virginia Tech community, it is well known we are close to AAU status, so is FSU. Both were relatively late in getting Medical Schools, but both have great research resources, and they know how to accelerate their research in the Medical Area. They both have been doing just that.

is going to receive an AAU invite from this secret society in the near future or ever. AAU membership is by invitation only, which requires an affirmative vote of three-fourths of current members. There is only one member in the state of Virginia and it’s not clear if this member would even support adding another state school to this secret society. There are schools with great research resources that have never received an invitation and there are schools with not so great research resources that are members. Go figure.

evidence to support this ridiculous assertion, but instead you resorted to claiming in a subtle but still disparaging way that you know of others with the proof. Saying that you know of others having the proof that VT is close to receiving an invitation from the AAU or the B1G isn’t much difference than saying a friend of a friend of a friend told me so or it was on the internet. In other words, no proof is forthcoming.
No one can say that VT or FSU or any other school for that matter is close to receiving an invitation from the AAU or joining the B1G. You won’t know until a vote is taken and in the case of the AAU the invitation has been extended.

calling them out for things that they never said, and then demanding that they prove the false statements that you concocted and attributed to them. It makes for a better dialog if people just agree or disagree with each other’s statements as posted.
I fail to see how you can comment that the Hoo86 post is a “long shot” in your opinion and then denigrate my opinion where I put the odds of it happening as less than 1%. Maybe your “long shot” is 5% or even 10%, it doesn’t really matter because we both are insinuating the same thing that it’s very very unlikely to happen. Posters should be able to offer their opinions, defend their positions, and make predictions about the likelihood of future events without having someone following them around making accusation in a weak attempt to control what is being said whether it is with words or pictures.

so subtle shots at Virginia Tech. Do you really think a WVU guy is going to be more dialed in on Virginia Tech and AAU, then some of the people here that very connected to the University? You didn’t start out taking shots at Virginia Tech with about 1% knowledge about Virginia Tech, but now that’s exactly what you are doing. You need to stop digging, and stop trying to make this a rivalry board. UVA is Virginia Tech’s biggest rival, and yet we don’t get this condescending bunk from their posters. That’s not what this board is about, but that’s exactly where you have gone recently, whether you want to see it or not. You have done better, I wish you would get back to that or leave.

the content of my post. I don’t think I have ever taken a shot at VT on this board because I’m a fan of the program so this is just another false accusation. I can’t say the same for the ACC, but I’m certainly not alone on this board in that regard and may even be in the majority. I’ve also never attacked you intentionally or tried to label you as this or that. I’ve never tried to control what people are posting or claim that they are trolling or flaming even if I didn’t agree with what was being said. This board is a conference realignment board for the most part - nothing more and nothing less. It seems like “doing better” involves saying things that you want to hear. You simply misread or misinterpreted my post which caused a flurry of accusations, mischaracterization, and personal attacks.

comment applied to the Hoo86 post that you reposted. Here it is:

On the other hand the B1G is going to take FSU, Miami, Virginia and Virginia Tech. I know two out of the four are not AAU, but I have heard the two that aren’t, are very close to getting AAU status.”
My comments about AAU was that it is difficult if not impossible to know if VT or FSU or any school is close to receiving the necessary votes (54) to become a member because of the secret nature of the AAU membership process. There was no shot taken whatsoever and I applied no percentage to any school’s chances of receiving AAU membership. It would be impossible IMO to even do so.
It is difficult to get a poster on a message board to understand something when his entire erroneous argument depends upon him not understanding it.

of a secret society especially when it comes to membership. I believe there are 71 current members so 54 votes would be needed to receive an invitation to join. your recent posts make it appear you are extremely well connected to both AAU and B1G decision makers. Can you give some credence to your strong views?
As a lesser informed member of the masses, I do agree at this point that AAU status will have almost nothing to do with the ultimate outcome. I also believe there are multiple variables still at play that makes the scenario as outlined, although unlikely, not to be categorically dismissed. What the schools at play may want (and what their state governance may require) make this much more of a horse trade then simply whatever the P2 wants- which has been the case in prior rounds.

AAU membership, but the reality is the decision to invite schools is in the hands of the current membership located throughout the country. It is impossible for outsiders to know if there is 75% support for a particular school, 50% support for a particular school, 25% support for a particular school, or 0% support. The voting is secretive. The evaluation process is secretive. Even the criteria for consideration is secretive. It’s a secret society much like the Rosicrucian, The Bohemian Club, and Freemasonry.

In the academic research, we are seeing so many VT faculty being appointed to such areas as National Science board, DoD Research consortium and not in the academic world, have President Sands being elected as chair of Division 1 Council of the NCAA. ( I know folks have their opinion on that, but it's STILL a great honor, and a recognition of VT reputation as a insitution with sound principles of management of collegiate athletics.
Also, VT (alone with UVA), deliberate close hold conduct during ACC turbulence has not been unnoticed and demonstrates 2 institutions above the fray, deliberate and collaborative.

Adding Texas and Oklahoma to the 14 team SEC and adding USC and UCLA to the 14 team B1G was the end of “Net Gain” for the P2. You are right, there is no more “net gain” to be had by adding schools. This is why Oregon and Washington are getting partial shares for 6 years or so from the B1G.
So…it’s on to the End Game.
The exclusion of the Big XII and ACC and G5 from the CFP and taking the vast majority of the remaining 42% of CFP profits is the first step for the P2. Then, rapid growth of media rights deals due to what will 100% be supercharged ratings for an incredible conference football slate that has zero competition from non-P2 leagues is the second step. It’s coming and nothing is stopping it. The NCAA had its chance, and blew it. ESPN and Fox and NBC and CBS and Amazon are taking control.

I remember reading several times on SEC media sources. That the SEC had refused Oklahoma due to Oklahoma insisting on Oklahoma State getting an SEC invite too. That was right after Texas A&M had declared intent to join the SEC in 2012.
Oklahoma is a football blue blood that UNC never even dreamed about being. The SEC would not take Oklahoma State but will take NC State & Duke to get UNC? Just because North Carolina has double the population. I would still argue that the Oklahoma population has more savvy college football fans than North Carolina. North Carolina has more savvy college basketball fans hands down over Oklahoma.
The SEC isn't taking UNC, NC State & Duke unless Sankey loses his mind. I don't see the SEC giving the state of Virginia to the B1G unless both schools just refused the SEC. I guess that could happen. I could see the SEC taking UVA, VT, UNC & NC State to get past the attached at the hip thinking politicians Could be the SEC will just get UNC, NC State, Clemson and maybe FSU. With the Virginia schools both going B1G. That would be the six to get both to 20 members.

a lot of moving pieces here, one of them is that basketball could easily pay out more to the sweet 16 than it is right now. Both the former President of ESPN Sports and the former CEO of Fox Sports said more basketball 💵 is coming, they have connections most don’t have. You have the right to ignore their statements, but I don’t think they say something publicly like that, unless they are fairly certain. If they are right, this theory is plausible.

But it was a completely different situation. Can you not see that? One school is not in a position to vote the other one in to a desired landing spot. Both schools are pretty powerless wrt joining the P2. VT and UVa didn't make a joint move to the ACC based on the government tying them as a package.
(In response to this post by Stech)

What they can do is oversee University operations. 1. Universities are part of the State executive branch, led by the governor. The General Assembly funds the universities from budget they appropriate and give laws that govern how the agencies will operate.
Governor appoints the board of visitors/trustees and the governor can relieve them. Also, while the President's of universities are hired by the board of visitors, they have accountability of hte governor and the governor can relieve them.
These conferences are NOT larger than States in authority. They an offer an individual institutions, but if the state mandates that these institutions will not be authorized to make that deal without the given approval of the state, it's not going to happen. To the state, an individual schools financial situation will only be based on the holistic needs of the state not that individual school. Otherwards, if the state feels it's imperative that their major institutions must be a package it will. Also the state will be prepared to accept their holistic schools needs.
(In response to this post by Pylons)

unless the governor wants to risk ridiculously bad PR. Think about how this linking of VT/UVa in conference affiliation could play out. Say the SEC extends an invitation to VT and not to UVa and in such a way that it is an obvious boon to VT athletics. The governor is going to instruct Sands and the BOV to turn it down or face removal? How do you think that plays politically? You want to be the guy who stands in the way of the good of one of your pre-eminent state universities? Love it. Brilliant move. Why let one prosper when both can flounder! You want to be a legislator that votes to cut VT academic funding because it went to the SEC? I get wanting a good home for both schools, and in particular the same home, but opposing benefits to one is just letting perfect being the enemy of good. Pushing in whatever way possible for them to make a positive move overall is great and all, but when the rubber meets the road, neither school is a valuable enough property to risk telling the B1G or SEC "take both or get none." It's ludicrous.
The conferences are absolutely larger than the states in authority in what matters here, otherwise VT, UVa, UNC, and NCSU would already be in the B1G or SEC. The Commonwealth has no authority over the conferences.

Miami is just a tiny private school without a fanbase. The only reason they've had success on the football field is because they sit in one of the most fertile football talent areas in the country. If they were located anywhere else, they would probably be a D3 school.

on the table are 72 or 76 teams with the earliest implementation date being the 2025/2026 season and that is IF they can get an acceptable media deal. Any really game changing shifts are likely further down the line and have a lot of moving parts.

in recognizing the opportunity. Had Corrigan had any inkling, a sales pitch to both FSU and PSU and their hall of fame coaches would have had a real shot to succeed with the two schools. The bigger problems would have been Duke, Maryland, UNC and maybe a few others buying in to being a football league overnight. There are a lot of what ifs from the late 80s/early 90s that had they come to pass the college football landscape today and the realignment discussions might be an entirely different discussion.

Gene Corrigan thought so. But at the time Penn State joined the Big Ten Joe Paterno would have seen the ACC as a Southern Basketball league. He would have been right. I'm not so sure he would have wanted that for Penn State.

a hard time getting the votes. No telling what happens if the ACC tries.

1. Does the SEC really want Duke???
2. Does Duke really want to play big boy football?
3. Will the SEC accept the B1G getting two new states while they get only one?
4. If those 8 leave will the ACC cease to exist?
5. How does ND look at this scenario?

coaches etc. And they have put out a decent product more seasons than not past 15 years. And yet when they had a Thurs game in Durham on national TV, 10000 or so showed up
The only way Duke fans support football is if they have a basketball game at halftime

What Duke wants and what the fans do are different things. Duke didn't pour major $$$$ into something they didn't want did they?
Maybe the lack of fan response has change their mind though.

What I heard:
1. Does the SEC really want Duke??? Yes, they want Duke UNC 🏀 game, and 🏀 is going to start paying out for Sweet 16 like the 🏈playoff. However, Duke is the iffy one.
2. Does Duke really want to play big boy football? See above they would bring great basketball, the SEC doesn’t need anymore 🏈 powers. That’s straight from the SEC.
3. Will the SEC accept the B1G getting two new states while they get only one? Yes, they want rivalries, especially 🏀 rivalries. See the above for why,
4. If those 8 leave will the ACC cease to exist? No, Notre Dame needs the ACC to stay semi independent. They will pick up some more private schools and probably UCONN and USF, maybe San Diego State because they are national recruiters.
5. How does ND look at this scenario? See the above.

the SEC than Clemson for some of the reasons you state. If the SEC wants to dominate all college athletics (which I think is their goal), they need to improve their basketball pedigree. They have been hyped in the media and propped up in perception for at least 5 years now as being a great men's basketball conference, when - if you really look at them obectively and using championships as the metric, they are the 4th best basketball conference (yes, 4th!)
