Posting History (346)

Don't think that kind of debt can be considered a good thing

Leveraged or not. Financed with bonds or not. What is the cash flow of their athletic department? Can they service that debt adequately? Are the investments resulting in higher annual revenue, are there suites and luxury seats being sold? It doesn't seem like things are going well

Seems really unfair

To Miami and Indiana. Teams will be gunning for their stars, and they cannot even replace them at this point.

Miami and Texas Tech are saving the p4

Miami is is going to be really, really good next year, and Texas tech is not going away. We really need to break the myth of invincibility of the sec.

ACC needs all their historical powers to compete

That includes FSU, Clemson and the U. Mario could land a top 3 class. They will be good for a while.

The rule next year protects them

The ACC needs to fix their tiebreaker rule and even their standing rule. UVA didn't play Miami, Pitt, GT, Clemson or SMU. Lost to crappy NC State (but that didn't count). I'd rather the top 2 ranked teams play absent a head to head tiebreaker.

Lol at best law school making a difference

You are not good at this. Public comments about a member school, that are factual (head to head duh) is not disparagement. I went to a big ten and an ACC law school myself and even I know that ...

Seriously?

He has had South Carolina, maybe the hardest place to win in the country, in the final rankings 2 of the last 4 years. His recruiting classes have averaged in the top 20. He was on the best teams in Virginia Tech history and recruits the 757 and DC/MD. He's charismatic and tireless and knows everyone in football, and he has coached at big time programs so he knows what is needed. It's literally a no brainer if we are lucky enough to have a shot.

Shane would be a no brainer

2 times in the last 4 years he had a top 25 team at SOUTH CAROLINA. That's where coaching careers go to die. He can recruit. He's charismatic. He's a Hokie Get it done.

Yep

Best thing for the ACC is that the Big Ten signs this deal. That likely stops expansion for a generation. And those schools will just blow the money on bad coaching decisions and inefficient capital construction. In the NIL era, money needs to go to the players. Stop wasting it on coaches.

That's a loser mentality

Unfortunately. It's sad we have come to being scared to play South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Purdue, West Virginia, etc! That's not exactly a murderers row. It's exactly who we should be playing: mid or bottom tier P4 programs. Meanwhile Miami is playing Florida and Notre Dame. Clemson is playing LSU. FsU is playing Florida and Alabama. It's truly embarrassing.

VT needs the ACC to be as strong as possible

Odds of the Big Ten and/or the SEC expanding around 2030 are unknown. I think lower than most of the clickbait addicts on here. And the odds of VT being included in any such expansion are even lower, depending of course on the scope of any expansion. Recent performance certainly isn't helping. So, VT needs the ACC to survive and get a better TV deal. Miami and Clemson (notwithstanding the loss to a very good LSU team at home) are loaded. Lots of first round picks on those two teams. FSU, GT, SMU and Louisville could be ok.

Miami and Clemson (despite the loss) have playoff caliber rosters

FSu, gt and smu could go on a roll. Be nice to get 3 teams in. 2 seems like the floor for the current state of the conference and playoffs.

That would be ideal

Get rid of the weak link or two. But I just took my daughter on a tour of Wake Forest. Half of that tour was them emphasizing their Power 4 athletic affiliation. Seems like a bit part of their culture and identity.

Odd

More like Top 2, then ACC (with top teams in ACC now roughly equal to the Top 2), then jump down to Big 12.

Skeptical of the buyout #s reported

We will see soon. I'm fine with changing the payoff formula. F$U and Clemson, if they continue to invest in their programs, may find that the acc is an easier path to the playoffs. 3 bids is doable

Only reasons would be (1) if ESPN wants it or

(2) they thought they would lose the lawsuits. Neither seem likely to me so I doubt the reporting.

History is everything

After that many years, you have built in alumni advantages, fanbase size, wealth advantages, expectation advantages, decades of a head start and momentum. A blue blood can always recover quickly after a downstretch because of those advantages.

I question if number three is accurate

Has there been solid reporting on that? I'm not sure why the conference would agree to that with the leverage, they have right now

This is so dumb

Virginia tech could easily be Oregon State and Washington State. That's not a good place to be. Cold and lonely. Keep the acc around for 10 years, remain relevant, and see what happens.

Miami, SMU and Clemson win this weekend

... and it will be interesting. Indiana, Georgia and Tennessee (less so) are all big favorites. But certainly one could lose. A&M should lose. I think Penn St, Oregon and OSU are in either way. Notre Dame could easily lose. Should be fun.

Top teams in the sec are not that great.

I could see tennessee losing to vanderbilt, Georgia losing to GT or USC losing to Clemson. A&M could easily beat the horns. Louisville over Kentucky and FSU showing a pulse against UF would be nice too. Lots of games left to shake things up.

Clemson could easily get in

If they beat Shane's hot team and we get a few more upsets, they are in.

ACC Teams Ranked in the Top 12 in 2nd-to-last AP Poll ...

Slow day at the office, so here is my research below FWIW. Most years in the 21st century, current ACC schools should expect 2 playoff teams on average (1.7 rounded up to 2). Of the 24 years, just going by the AP top 12 (or highest ranked champ), you would have 12 years of one bid, 8 years of 2 bids, 3 years of 3 bids and one year of 4 bids. And then below shows the schools in the top 15 (not top 12 below, just to see how many were close) and total in the top 25. Stanford had lots of good teams - sleeping giant now. 2000: 3 in top 15 (all top 6), and 5 in top 25. 2001: 3 in top 15, and 6 in top 25 2002: 1 (#1) in top 15, and 4 in top 25. 2003: 2, 2 2004: 4, 8 2005: 3, 7 2006:3, 5 2007:3, 4 2008:1, 3 2009:3, 5 2010:2, 3 2011:2, 4 2012:3, 4 2013:3,5 2014:2, 4 2015:4,4 2016:3, 6 2017:3, 4 2018: 1, 2 2019:1, 1 2020: 2, 4 2021: 1, 5 2022: 2, 3 2023: 1, 4

I'm not sure if the replies are sarcastic or defeatism

If there are 3 in the top 12, it is what it is. I went back and looked at the last 25 years of AP ratings. There were multiple years where 3-4 current ACC schools were in the top 15 in the second to last poll. Normally those were when Stanford had their nice run. And to be fair, there were also multiple years where there was only one school. Personally, I don't see how you could keep out a one loss SMU or Clemson (if they didn't make the ACC CG), because they would be ranked in the top ten. It's very unlikely, but I am going to be rooting for SMU over Pitt and Clemson over Pitt and VT.

Put it this way: 11-1 SMU in over a 9-3 Tennessee?

Again, this is just for fun. I really doubt Clemson, Miami and SMU run the table.

2 should be the baseline expectation most years

3 would be difficult but certainly possible. And enough with the silly Miami conspiracy nonsense. The holding call against them (that took the TD off the board) was the worst call of that game.

Could the ACC have 3 playoff teams?

Easy to see a scenario where Miami and Clemson win out, Clemson beats Miami and both get bids. Meanwhile, Big Ten and SEC schools keep beating up each other while SMU or Pittsburgh has a 1 loss season.

Well, I'm guessing ABC,ESPN and Disney execs, plus super highly paid media

consultants hired by the ACC, know more about media rights valuations than HokieCentral posters ... but you never know.

Come on. FSU and Clemson have lots of football fans

There are lots of metrics that support this fact. Facebook engagement, attendance, ratings, merchandising. This is a silly chicken/egg argument. They get good game times and network slots because they will deliver good ratings, not the other way around.
