Posting History (4,068)

In reality Virginia has 2 flagship schools

Can a school really be a flagship when another school has more and turns out more alumni?

Good post. Fully agree with the general theme of your 2nd paragraph

But disagree with your 3rd. You and I do not agree on much but so what, there is room for 2 or more perspectives. Where I differ on paragraph 3 is that those markets DO still have something to do with realignment. To me that is the why behind especially the GT to the Big talk. The point as I see it is the answer to your question of "how much will people pay to access a specific football team," is strongly based on whether the team is a regional team. Seems to me if your point were predominately true then all the SEC/B10 would need to do is mount advertising campaigns in the specific markets to sell the content they now have rather than go through all the cost/trouble of adding teams. I guess my point is that the presence in a market gets more people willing to pay than a slick advertising of teams not in that market. Home team still matters. Not completely but it still matters enough. Good discussion.

I agree that the little p2 does not have to have 14-20 teams.

And again a big if, UVA and VT are a package deal and UNC/NCSU are as well, then the ACC could only lose FSU, Clemson and Miami. Maybe add USF and have serious discussions with Wake and BC as to whether they are willing to make the commitment to be at the just under the P2 level. IMHO an ACC minus FSU, Clemson, Miami, Wake and BC plus USF could be a really good conference.

All that still speaks to a process of bringing your product to market

WE both agree that cable process is not going to be the process now nor in the future. But just so much has been written about the B10 desperately wanting/needing getting into the SE market, not to sell cable packages but something else. That was my point. Not that they were selling cable but they wanted market share. i The SEC wants into the DMv/NC market but it is not to sell cable subscriptions. Discussing linear cable with forced subscriptions, misses the point of the 2 above realities.

But isn't what you call

legacy linear cable" just a process of getting a product into a market? A process to something greater. I agree it was the process in the old Boston Market discussions and I agree it will not be the process going forward. But, Big, SEC, ACC or B12 all want their products in the markets to grow fans and not just depend on fans having to hunt through streaming to get the game they want. So I point was making is that all want to expand markets, better time slots etc. It was not that the only way that could be done was with the old model.

UNC has run things in their conference for so long, of course they think

it is the B10 and SEC coming to them with hat in hand rather than they going to the SEC and Big 10 hat in hand. Yes they will try very hard to pick and choose who they want and don't want. IMHO they have never and will never willingly take any positive action wrt VT. It is simple, when VT is doing well, we are taking too many assets UNC thinks they would get if we were not able to compete with them. They do not fear competing with UVA in the DMV area but we are a different story. They never wanted us in the ACC and the reason played out VT 4 conference championships, UNC zero.

My opinion, it is the old BC thing in ACC expansion

The ACC wanted to become #1 in the Boston Market and thought they mainly needed to bring ACC teams into that market to get to that goal. It is my opinion that both the B10 and SEC see both the DMV and NC markets as more of something they just need to get their brand and teams into than to have someone who can bring the market. I still believe that if the SEC gets it right they will see that VT carrying the SEC banner into the DMV area is a much stronger product than UVA carrying either the B10 or SEC banner.

agree

Once UNC is secure they will be all in on creating the least possible competition against them they can.

Remember history, UNC has been against VT all along

They blocked us from being in the ACC much earlier. Just my opinion but I see both UNC and UVA needing VT to be in a lower league and no real threat for fans and recruits for them to succeed in the P2.

Don't they, along with ODU and JMU

and maybe even App St, give us the largest return than any other g6 teams? One thing is for sure, more VT fans get to see the team if we are playing in Harrisonburg, Lynchburg or 757 than would with a road game to Ark St, GA Southern or anybody like that? And don't we have to schedule one or two of those g6 types to get the home game we need?

IMHO every Hokie should know and should have known that fact bomb

coach MD dropped. Way to much expectation to either do more with less or a lack of knowledge what it takes. And by what it takes I mean the ability to plan spending and the ability to pull a couple of million to match every price increase during signing season. Way too much of the blame on Whit, Fu, Pry, Young and others.

Yep. The point

Her home could have had an Iron Gate address and still be in Botetourt Co and her school be JR.

Isn't the Iron Gate town line the Botetourt/Alleghany

line? My guess is a bunch of Botetourt residents have an Iron Gate mailing address. I had a friend in high school who live right where 3 counties came together. So he physically lived in one but had a mailing address from a 2nd county and a phone exchange from the 3rd.

We have not seen VT win 10 games since 2016

And we have no definable fact to say VT can win 10 games in 2026. We do not have any facts either way. So for me, I will be cautious. I have to seen it on the field what the can do. Way too many thought that the 2024 team was going to be way more than it turned out they were. Bottom line, until we see something we don't have a point of reference to project anything.

When the talent really shines is late season

Big difference in just another early season game and the tourney. When it really matters, when teams absolutely locked in, the talent difference is just greater.

Hey we were seeded 3rd in the ACCT and 17ish in the regional and finished

runner up in both. It does appear to be who we are and regional host are just above our level right now.

Pete is doing about as good as a coach can do

The players are doing about as well as they can do. We just need some players that can hit against top 15 pitching when it matters.

You got it wrong, I compared the whole situation to the whole situation

Brooks did pretty much the same thing Buzz did except Buzz conspired (Yes that is my word) to take a supposedly good recruiting class and Brooks took both recruits and the best 2 players from the roster. The Buzz recruits dissed VT to go with Buzz, the Brooks players dissed VT to go with him. Looks exactly the same to me. Georgia Amore chose to exit as a part of a multi player exit. That is the sore point.

What story did I make up?

Is it not a simple fact that, no matter what her motivation was, she did join in the stripping down of our roster? Are the comparisons of Buzz to KB not accurate? Maybe Buzz was more honest as he did take recruits but not the existing roster. KB took both but he was not a pied piper for GA or Strack. They made their own decisions.

OK, here goes

She was a part of a great peak in VT WBB then a part of a stripping down of the same program. She is kind of like Buzz who got us to a sweet 16 then left seriously damaging that years recruiting. If Buzz had not stripped the recruiting class and if Brooks had not done the same thing, both would be seen in a more positive light. Had GA just said she wanted to win an NC and had gone to LSU.USCe or UConn and went alone, she would be seen in a more positive light. But she was a part of a systemic stripping down of our WBB program. That makes everything different to a certain segment of Hokies.

They can deny anything they want.

My guess is we would be given the chance to move the location from Blacksburg into an area, say Roanoke/Salem and play there. But the Committee won't make that offer to a team in the 14-20 range. They will just pick the higher national name from among that 14-20 range that does meet the requirement. IIWII

I think your 1st sentence is completely wrong.

So let me say it this way. If Bama, OU, Texas whatever other real big historic name was in the same place, then the "Committee" would have bent over backwards to work it out, waiving the time/distance travel or even the game times to work around the graduation. But we were neither a #1 seed nor a historic national name so the NCAA was not going to make the kind of effort I described. We made it an easy work around because we were in the 15 to 20 range and are not a historic national name. And I am pretty sure you are incorrect about "no other school has this hotel issue." My guess is there are a lot that could face this problem. Especially those within geographic areas like we are AND have a much bigger event already scheduled. And I will make one more guess. If you think an AD, any AD especially at a non blueblood could handle this and deliver a host bid to their school, then I think you will be disappointed in our next AD and the next and so on.

There may be some element of truth to what you say. Guess what

It does not matter nobody is perfect every angle is different and the umps view is THE one. It happens and I am sure that there are Duke and UVA fans somewhere complaining about the umps in those games too. Bad calls or questionable calls are just a part of the game and out team just couldn't hit the ball yesterday. FSU pitchers just kept the ball down and were better than our hitters yesterday.

Maybe the name Duke and the feeling that several programs at Duke

including softball are national level programs and VT softball is seen as more of a newby?

Well, this old man is going to be short of sleep tonight

Already past my bedtime but so worked up and excited, it will take a while to settle down

Frank and Bud were more use a different kind of talent.

And they had a couple of ingredients in addition to the salt and pepper.

IMHO VT was not a good fit

because we needed him to be THE guy. That was not coaching or scheme, it was just allocation of resources. UNC will need him to be #5 or first off the bench. The same Neo we had would have been fine if the opposing Defensives had worry more about 2-3 other players ahead of him. Thing is just like with Baker on the Womens side, they each had to play a higher/different role.

Why would anybody take the time to read about 2027 predictions before

The rosters are set? We have no idea who besides Carliegh are going to be contributors. As for the men, rightt now we only know of 2 (hopefully 3).

UCLA is a school I do not root for but got to give credit to their WBB

In one way, USCe has been the big bad schoolyard bully bulldozing the likes of Mulkey led LSU and Geno led Uconn. Then this team shows up that is more physical and like a bulldog on D in the paint just beat what USCe does best. USCe may have been quicker but UCLA negated that by interior D causing USCe to hurry (and miss) shots. Quite and interesting games. Maybe USCe's team heard their coach was leaving?

See above post on Whitt and NIL. Stop blaming him for things way out or his

control. Do you really want him going dark side against even the president to get money kind of like Buzz did and what Dabo did for years? Why do you really think our AD, or most ADs control the money that goes to players? It may change but not yet. Bakker and Nelson leaving sounds more like our position wrt paying WBB players has slipped.

No you are trying to maximize his compentence/incompetence

What do you really think Whit could do when Burrus says "no" IMHO Whit is dealing with an undercapitalized situation and when that is the case, there are many things the CEO could do if not undercapitalized. IMHO Whit is not responsible for the undercapitalized situation because I do not believe he has had the freedom to go to the kind of fund raising that is needed. And I do not think he has had that authority to do that.

Fully agree with new real leadership at the place real change in direction

can be made. In short the AD level is not where the problem is. IMHO we have an AD who is essentially trying to run an undercapitalized business. Until we have a president who cares as much about establishing a P2 level athletic program as getting, into the AAU, it is doubtful that the improvement fans want will really happen. That begs the question, which should we pursue first. I think Sands actions are clear that he just wants to try to hold athletics as close to where they are while his fund raising focus is not on making VT athletics P2 level. One more doom and gloom point, I do not see VT getting a new president who does elevate athletics. Not sure we can keep a BOV that is as active and motivated to bettter athletics going forward. ** Edited by VTCALS72 at 4/2/2026, 8:13:43 AM

Where did you get the "publically admitted he screwed---"

Yes, in that year VT dropped significantly in comparison to our peers, but was that one person and one person alone is holding back MBB? I know many want to believe that because changing one person is the easiest fix. IMHO, look across Burruss. That is the more likely place that the actual lack of setting real goals and pursuing them is (not) happening. WB is doing what he can with what he has to work with. Probably he is like CMY in 2026. Your last sentence seems to think all the AD does is spend and promote the revenue sports. He is responsible for much, much more.

That is a downside tto pay the players that was hardly disscussed early on

Where our program is right now is the epitomy of a place to be raided. A place that seems to have internal chemistry issues and that can easily be outbid is a sitting duck.

Maybe so but is that because of the $$$ that allow not only the purchase

of better players, coaches, everything? Not sure why some VT fans EXPECT underfunded VT teams to automatically be "better run." funding level establishes the baseline for everything at this time.

And how much the competition has "in reserve"

Like Teel said about Morris to UVA for another year. They have poured more money into the QB position with the 2 they have but, again in Teel's view they could get 2 mil more, available to meet a Morris contract in a heartbeat. I don't believe that CMY has ever had the funding to fight off portal raiders. I don't believe anything but football can come up with a quick 2 mill.
