Well, I'd say in reality there can really be only one flagship

Alumni volume alone wouldn't define that though So maybe better to term VT/UVa "the 2 most prominent schools"

And if the politicians wouldn't stand in the way, there's no package deal

20 years ago was a very different situation from what potentially lies ahead...that wasn't a "package deal," which would presumably would be presented to a conference independent of whomever is offering it...it was more of a "do this or else" presented to a school subject to the influence of the source of the ultimatum Politicians or whoever can and should want their flagship schools to both have good conference homes, but when it comes down to it, truly tying them together for expansion is folly

I'm curious how you define "got it right"

IMO, there is no "right" answer with football rankings. If there were, there wouldn't be eleventy brazillion rating methods out there

The key may be related to local economies, but

package deals still don't make sense...if it were to come down to a choice between a virtual guarantee of keeping one economy strong while risking the other suffering...versus...risking that both suffer...who is choosing the latter? Who chooses dumping both by the side of the road when one can be saved?

How and by whom? What a terrible notion.

"Let's make it harder for premier our universities to gain a benefit...yeah, the ones who have basically no bargaining power...let's make them less attractive. Let's make it easier for both to suffer if there's P2 expansion wanted into VA."

Does it really do that?

I'm seeing that it imposes antitrust-type rules with respect to how consolidated media rights can be negotiated, but nothing about conference membership

After a quick skim of what's in there,

I don't see anything that would compel expansion 🀷🏼

I think I'm relatively sensitive to things like that and

have never found it rape-y And if it's rape-y for women, isn't it for men too?

What does "that can't happen" mean?

What exactly can't happen and what should the consequences be? Such an empty thing to say. Be mad about it all you want, but things like that can, do, and will continue to happen...to bunches of schools.

I didn't comment on that because it's obvious

That sports require fans. It's unclear to me what you think I don't grasp. Fandom really doesn't require them to be irrational though...even if that's part of the definition of fanaticism...they don't have to buy into the fallacies I pointed out. (Interestingly when I Google fanatical, it leaves out the "irrational" part) I notice you didn't comment on those fallacies. If some fans choose to speak/think/act irrationally...go for it...to each their own for sure... it's just interesting to me how people talk about their fandom and how sports seem to affect them. I'm never going to feel victimized, angry, embarrassed, or even proud really of VT's success or lack thereof (all clearly common things for the populace here.) Happy with success I guess...but it's not like my overall sense of contentment is dependent on what VT is doing in athletics.

No one is "risking" their money or time

Those are both gone whether wins or losses follow. When I donate, part of that is in hopes of it supporting greater success. Cool if that seems to happen...I will probably enjoy watching the games/matches a little more...but it's not like I'm going to be pissed if it doesn't. If you think time spent on fandom is an "investment"...wow, that's weird. If you choose to "risk your emotions"...well, ok...have at it.

There's a difference between emotion as part of an experience

And emotion tied to its outcome that is lasting...and builds or is diminished buy subsequent outcomes It does seem like many Hokie fans do embrace hardship and the victim role. It's very odd to me.

How do the outcomes impact you?

Did your rooting not work properly today? Is you reputation damaged when the Hokies lose "too much"? I guess I can see someone feeling that way if they put a lot of value on "bragging rights," but I also don't get why people brag about stuff they weren't directly involved in.

well, I just learned to not let my emotions be driven

by outcomes of games I'm not involved in. The only thing that really gets to me is outcomes for individual wrestlers at big events...because it's the VT sport I'm the biggest fan of and it's so obvious how outcomes impact those athletes...but even that is very short-lived I also just don't get how it can be "hard" to just sit there and watch games and root for your team...geez, if you're finding it hard, maybe find another hobby to replace it?

I don't find it hard at all.

I watch games for entertainment. I absolutely pull for our Hokies and enjoy the experience more when we have success...but the outcomes don't ultimately impact me 🀷🏼

Straight up?

I agree it didn't look like a strike, but there was nothing "up" about that bat when it stopped

One can certainly disagree with the approach, but I see some sense in it

Of course you don't want to lose *any* games...you also know you're almost certainly going to have to beat the overall #1 at some point...maybe beat them twice...you can't afford to lose there either. Maybe it wasn't even the approach. We'll see.

There's no "magic number"

but I also think it's hard to argue against more pitches/time becoming detrimental at some point...it doesn't magically go from perfect to cooked, but more isn't always better

I think he was making that gamble before UCLA

Lost...just gambling that we'd play UCLA in the winner's bracket instead. UCLA losing didn't change the gambling proposition

Easy to turn that phrase, but in reality

We weren't much of a favorite, if at all, in that game. It was kinda surprising we ended up a 2 seed. Had we been on the other half of that split hair and lost to a more "name" team as a 3 seed, I doubt you'd consider the stupid phrase. UCLA has a much better chance of being a real choker

I was there and what you say sounded about right, but here's what AI says

"The full 2025 tournament schedule ran as follows: Day 1: Saturday, Nov. 15 10:00 a.m. EST: First-round matches 4:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. EST: Championship quarterfinals and first two rounds of the consolation bracket Day 2: Sunday, Nov. 16 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. EST: Championship semifinals, third-place duals, consolation finals, semifinals, and 7th-place matches 7:00 p.m. EST: Championship Finals (broadcast live on ESPN2)"

He sounds kinda like me. πŸ˜†

Dad went to PSU. Sister went to PSU. Grew up in PA as A PSU fan

Yahoo Sports is a PSU site?

Not that your logic would make any sense even if it was.
