Franklin is an elite recruiter. Coaching the QBs remains to be seen
Quite concerning, IMO

Remember anything from a psu site is diatribe.they hate VT
All creating a fake narrative., these are the same folks who champion a coach that protected sexual predator., need I say more on their character.

Yahoo Sports is a PSU site?
Not that your logic would make any sense even if it was.

He's from PA. His mom went to PSU.
Backstom grew up in PA. Had a sister attend PSU and his mom went to PSU. He grew up a fan of Northwestern (where his Dad went to school) and a PSU fan. Now, I am NOT arguing whether the article is biased or related to slamming Franklin who is now at VT. What I am doing is......answering your question of which you asked. Is the connection direct to PSU? Nope. Is there a loose connection or "a little bit"? The answer to that is Yes.

Stop writing those articles Pylons! It's you.
I'm kidding brother. I like PSU ok. Have lots of buddies that went to PSU. True quick story here. I actually met Sandusky. My first cousin played defense at Tech. I'm from Gate City. Sandusky came to my cousins house and was recruiting him. No, we weren't molested. My cousin later committed to Tech. Anyway, I was shocked at the knowledge he had about defense. It was like a computer or modern day AI in a human brain. Terrible and tragic the gift and life he wasted and the damage he did. I've been to many coaching clinics over the years and have met lots of coaches including the likes of Spurrier and Saban. I've never met a guy that new more about defense than Sandusky. His knowledge was alarming and on another level.

Mendoza is currently being taught how to take snaps from under center.
He won the Heisman, a Natty, and was the #1 pick. Nobody goes from college to the NFL without things to learn and mechanics to work on.

Not a concern to me...in some ways I think he is justifying the draft pick.
McCarthy claims that he did the exact same thing with hall of famer Aaron Rodgers when he coached him at Green Bay in the article I linked. The headline even says that he is treating Allar like a young Aaron Rodgers. For the record Allar was the fourth of Franklin's PSU QBs taken in the NFL draft. I'm not sure there are many if any college coaches that can say they have that many taken within that time frame. IMO that's what will matter most to QB recruits. Clearly Franklin and his staff developed those QBs well enough to get drafted, which means they played at a high level in college. I'd say most rookie NFL QBs are put through "QB school" by their OCs and QB coach. IMO I view Allar as a faster Jim Druckeniller, he has a ridiculous set of physical tools....but he probably isn't an NFL QB, and I don't think that's on Franklin, just like I don't think that any amount of coaching was ever going to make Logan Thomas an NFL QB.

That's the Penn st
Take of the week. James Franklin is doing so much for this program, what the Steelers are doing with Drew Allar isn't even a concern to me at this moment. I'm sure there are folks on this high dollar staff that are pretty well versed in the mechanics of throwing a football. ** Edited by crazylane at 5/16/2026, 10:47:13 AM
