Have over 800 cans of cat food and 3000 lbs of kitty litter in the garage. Was stocking up at Costco.

I’m on the fence……
Really like the car and the driving experience. Concerned about issues I’ve read regarding service and software. I could overlook that but it appears there is a real chance that bankruptcy could be on the not too distant horizon.

My go to down there is Baja Sharkeez….But under 21 may be an issue….
Newport Landing is primarily a restaurant but has a bar on 2nd level. Probably won’t be raging but may be an option. It’s pretty close by. Malarky’s and Mutt Lynch’s could options but they are not a short walk. Given the widely reported rioting and looting on the 4th, some businesses may be ultra cautious. I’d call in advance.

No supplemental essay, test optional, aggressive fee waivers….
They also have multiple campuses. I look at them as a “just check the box” type of school application.

Engineering rankings….Thoughts….
Offhand…..GT, VT, Purdue, JHU, UCSD, Mich and Wash too low. Harvard, Columbia, NYU, Yale and Penn too high. Duke should be on list.

Kid graduated last night……..
Next step, ocean lifeguarding for summer. Then off to Taiwan for the academic year on a national security Chinese language/cultural immersion scholarship through US State Dept. Final college selection TBD but most likely Nuclear Engineering at Georgia Tech, UC Berkeley or US Naval Academy. Speech was appropriately on the “road less traveled.” So proud of this young man.

USNA will not defer him….
His medical clearance, which was a pain in the butt, is good for 2 years. He would have to otherwise reapply. We are still trying to figure out the process on the civilian side of the equation.
I’m not unhappy. The State Department program is a one-time opportunity. It has real value. At least in theory everything else is on the table. And he gets another summer as an ocean lifeguard. And he’ll be here at home until September. And it’s him making adult choices. Big ones.

It’s complex….
He was recently awarded a very competitive and selective national security critical language scholarship by the US State Department for Chinese language and cultural immersion in Taiwan for the coming academic year. He should return with a high level of Mandarin fluency. He has decided that this is the route he will take for the next year.
I’m not completely sure where this will lead us on the college front. We are still trying to determine options and planning. More knowledge is better. Thus the trip to Cal……Which we were told at least 10 times yesterday is the #1 public university in the US.

Did accepted student day at UC Berkeley yesterday…..
Very interesting. Admissions told us that UCB had an overall acceptance rate of 10% and 5% for Engineering. Hilliest campus I’ve ever been on. Beautiful day. A bit chaotic. Eclectic is a fair description. It definitely had a vibe. My kid said he liked it way more than he thought he would.
