Topsail Island at the inlet. Wrightsville Beach is pulling them out right and left. Ocean is a little different than their neighborhood pool!

Swept away while walking on the beach in Laguna as a large wave crashed onto the beach. Mother and son walking with her were rescued.
Hope your son and all lifeguards remain safe during rescues.

Think this was in the seventies. The number of injuries and a few of fatalities prompted a resolution by the city council to close the area to swimming. A number of surfers who surfed the break argued in front of council that closing the break would reduce tourism and would not likely deter hardcore surfers, creating a nuisance enforcement issue. Ultimately the board decided not to close the break.
I tried to find the exact time this was proposed, but all that would come up is the fact that they have closed the beach today through this afternoon because of the dangerous surf with waves reaching 20ft.

San Diego. Took a morning surfing class with this girl I knew out there. Towards the end I wiped out, and as soon as I came up to the surface, some other surfer whammed me right in the head with his or her board. Knocked me a bit dizzy. In hindsight, I probably had a slight concussion.
Two hours later I went skydiving.
One hour after that I was throwing up on the side of a California freeway.

Got washed down to the surfer beach and tore the labrum in my left shoulder trying to avoid getting run over by a surfboard. California tried to kill me.

were paralyzed after wipe outs.
And these were in pretty mild VB conditions.
But we have mostly shore breaks, so not much room for error.
I was so happy when he quit competing. And grew up where he doesn’t body board any more.

I misjudge the wave on a body board and it brought my head straight down into the sand. I thought for sure I was paralyze and just try to get my head out of the water so I did not drown. It was a real stinger and I got up out of the water. My girlfriend said WTF were you thinking. First day on the beach, and I had a sprained neck the rest of the vacation.

I managed to get both palms down into the sand to brace for impact, but the wave was so powerful my arms were about useless stopping my head from getting driven in. I used one of my 9 lives that day, I think. I never experienced waves like that in VB or OC, the only other beaches I had been used to. Later, some cops came by enforcing a no swimming rule because someone had drowned that day a couple of blocks away. They didn't need to worry about me getting back in there, ha.
