My dog is smarter than most sports journalists
TSL staff excluded, of course. Grunk is not the next coming of Peyton Manning at UT, but this team will run the ball and get rid of the ball fast. He was heads and shoulders ahead of the rest of the QB room.

I used to teach a course at the Naval Observatory
After a while, I just gave a 2 hour lunch on Friday because I knew a certain group of students would not be back on time.

This coaching staff is VASTLY superior to Fuente and Pry reboots
The only real question mark is a rookie OK, but he's being mentored by a legend in Wayne Ruggiero.
Pry's fate was sealed when we saw the OC and DC. Fuente's staff was obviously better (Foster, for instance), but it was otherwise by no means a standout group.

They took a lot of undue blame last year
That said, tons of room for improvement, the have a second year with a proven OL coach, the offense is going to be conducive to OL play, and they will get a lot of help from the TEs. How well they play will probably dictate the offensive success this year.

You realize that mess of an OL last year was top 5 in running efficiency?
The OL is still an area of concern, but there is a major upgrade at LT, and there will be more stability and better depth. Some of the issues with the OL last year had nothing to do with the OL and more with the OC and QB. This is one area where I see a much better performance.

VARgentina showed their true colors
Didn't deserve to be there and played like it. Congrats to their goalie for a great performance. When they rightfully went to 10 players, Messi just stood around. Also were incredibly sore losers.

Penn State fans are the ultimate in unearned entitlement
The institution itself is why they can't get over the top. Too many fans are still living in the Paterno era. Nobody cares about the whiteout (not unique anymore). It's just a rotting program. Not sure who can save it if anyone. In their hearts they probably knew this wasn't a coaching problem.

Brezhnev took Afghanistan, Begin took Beirut, Galtieri took the Union Jack
And Maggie, over lunch one day, took a cruiser with all hands.....apparently to make him give it back

Very similar to water polo
Generally dominated by smaller countries like Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, etc. with similar academy structure. US college teams Generally dominated by smaller countries like Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, etc. with similar academy structure. US college teams are also stacked with internationals that get the benefit of the competition here and their home club teams.

I love the football but there are some really stupid things about it
#1 is the phony baloney clock. I can wrap my head around the clock going up. But no more extra time. If somebody is hurt (chances are he's not really hurt), stop the clock. If the ball goes over the goalie into the stands, stop the clock. If there is a referee's conference VAR, stop the clock. Water polo has continuous action including during exclusions. What really drives me nuts is the end of a soccer game where the team that's behind has the ball, it's obvious the clock has run out, but the refs give the team with the ball another attempt to score.

It's the alternative National Anthem along with Free Bird
I was at TJ Oshie's last hattie when he played his former team, the Blues, on Country night when that song played about 5 times. My mom is from WV and loves that song. Had a couple tears that night.

When my son was in the barracks of Camp Lejeune there were told to spray...
.....with chlorine spray and scrub it off. My son spent a fortune out of his own pocket for his squad to clean what they could. They had just been locked in their barracks in Okinawa for covid then came back and were put in barracks that had supposedly been shut down for mold to quarantine. Black mold was everywhere. A few months later they had a suicide epidemic. This is all related.

They have strict rules on caring for them
My son was at Parris Island in the Summer. I'd guess the officer candidates are treated better than the recruits. They will have black flag days when it's too hot to train outside. Then have too much invested in these men to mess around with their health during training.

It's not even hot, but it's miserable in the DMV
Walked the dawgs at 0700 and came back soaked. Went outside about 11 and cut my small lawn and sweated through another shirt, pair of shorts, and pair of socks. Can't even imagine later this week. My wife retired from coaching the outdoor Summer swim team, so we don't have her badgering the guards to run the water cannon every night to stay as far ahead of the impending heat as possible. I'm guessing my swim Friday will be utterly brutal in about 88-90 degree water.
Going to Rockies on the 4th. I'm sure I'll be pretty happy to get away from this miserable weather.

Oh the thrill of dragging a PC Portable to sit on the floor and write FORTRAN code in the hallways of the Cassell.

You miss every shot you don't take
Right now people are in $$$ giving mood because huge changes are being made and this Athletic Department and BoV is all in. I think we've all been waiting for this for quite a while. Might as well ride the wave and see where it goes.

You were right there
I do occasional calls in that neighborhood. A high school friend was a USMC infantry officer and GWOT veteran and collected/contributed some of the display items for that era.

The museum led my son to to USMC
Five years as an 0311, combat veteran, North Africa. Used the GI Bill to get his degree and is in his second career serving his country.
We all went to the museum when he was 16. I was ready to enlist with him after going through the entire museum. It's that cool

Beyond the Pail Podcast is the greatest thing ever
I pretty much have started listening to all of the TSL podcasts on my afternoon walk with the dogs. Always look forward to Teel weekly, but these Bud podcasts have been the best thing TSL has done. Loved last week's walk down the memory lane of DEs. There are a lot of names I haven't heard in forever.

I recommend a Jeep/Stellantis product
Only if you like your dealer enough to where you spend a lot of time and money there.
My only experience with Audi was my parents owning a 4000 and the infamous 5000 back in the 80s.

I looked up Manitowoc, WI again
Much better results, but let's face it, most of Manitowoc is a dive bar. One note: it lists the Sub Pub as a dive bar. It's actually a rooftop bar at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. Love your site in general.

I lost a tooth at HB then a week later ride a rip tide at Pacific Beach
Got washed down to the surfer beach and tore the labrum in my left shoulder trying to avoid getting run over by a surfboard. California tried to kill me.

You can always put on warmer clothes
I'm stuck of sweating all the time and having the AC on. I hate going to a blazing hot car. The outdoor pool has been cooking for just one weekend and is already too warm to swim another more than lazy laps in. There was about a two hour window in the mornings this weekend where you could actually sit out by the pool before you started sweating. My Goldens are miserable. We have a nice back patio if you like mosquitoes and sweating. I'll pass. I loved last Winter where it was cold for an extended period. I have appropriate clothing. I'm good.

Presque Isle is amazing
My son lived everywhere from 4th to 7th street downtown and was a lifeguard at Presque Isle - he even won the Lifeguard Olympics and is memorialized in the lifeguard post. Days are usually pretty cool enough with a good breeze on the beach. You can spend the morning at the beach, hit the water park at Waldameer, then top it off with an orange swirl at Sara's!
My son now lives four blocks from Lake Michigan. There is a decent walkable beach, but the next town North has one of the best beaches on the Great Lakes. Summers are just amazing. No endless weeks of 95/95.

We are done with the heat and are not retiring South
Depending on where the middle kid and his vet fiancΓ© settle, we are looking at permanently settling on either Lake Erie in PA or Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. Wisconsin is colder but less snow than Erie. Both have four seasons. I'm just sick of sweating all the time.

I will think of them when I pass by!
The pool is still there. They have a regular pool and a long course pool that is something like 47meters.

Worked on Oahu and drove by it every day
Very sobering, indeed. Now I drive by Arlington Cemetery three days a week on the way to the pool. When my kids swim at the O Club at Ft Myer, used to see the caissons setting up for funerals. Never fail to feel a little emotion every time you go by these things even when it's part of your daily life.
Also kind of sobering to go to work in a building on Hickam and see bullet holes in the walls.

I got one of those from Parris Island
"Boot camp sucks. I hate the DIs. They call me a fat disgusting slob." Kid went from 214# to 178# with first class PFT and perfect CFT at the end of 13 weeks.
The letters got worse then got better at the end. Then at 19 he was on combat patrol in the back of Toyota Hilux in Africa.
Congrats and all the best to your son. Quantico is no joke. My son got out after 5 years and went back to Q but an entirely different school.
