Rocovich thread deleted. List of bans just handed out ...
@Windows NT: permanent. You've had 50+ posts deleted over the years. Not sure why I kept you this long. @JRHokie: permanent. You've had about 20 posts deleted as well (I'm shocked it's not more), and you rarely add anything substantive to the discussion, just snide, vague comments. (This one was difficult, folks, because I've known JRHokie personally for many years, I just don't want to put up with his posts anymore.) @Gobbler-100: permanent. You've had 80 or so posts deleted over the years. EIGHTY. (Also difficult. Gobbler-100's dad was very generous with me, and that's why I gave him a long rope. Enough is enough. 80 is a big number.) @VTFinance10: permanent. You've also had 20 posts deleted over the years and dabble in political discussions frequently. No more. @Blueboy: permanent. 20 posts deleted over the years for a multitude of reasons. If any of you were subscribers, then you would know from my postings on the subscriber board and from my comments in my recent Friday Q&A that I am done with the message board BS. DONE. I've always tried to be a nice guy, but I'm not being a nice guy anymore. A cleanup of the boards is long overdue and now ongoing. Add value to the boards and avoid political discussions, or you're gone. It's pretty simple. ** Edited by Will Stewart at 6/12/2026, 11:21:52 AM

Got to ask: Why even have Lounge boards. TSL is supposed to be about sports
I get they provide community but seems getting rid of them (current and upcoming new one) would also go along way towards eliminating the off topic (non-sports) posts. Does the message traffic and clicks on the Lounge help that much financially?

You couldn't handle the Lounge

Hahaha, I actually post on the lounge
Just not at the ridiculous level that some do

I am pretty sure the lounge has the most posts of any of the boards.
I am pretty confidant Will said that one time.

Third most. Here are the post stats for this year.

The free basketball board has 2.2 times as many posts compared to football?
Is that right? If so, maybe the basketball fandom is higher than we think ?

No... Just 700 posts per game

Well, consider the time frame. It includes MBB season, but not FB season.
If you switch the dates to 7/1/2025 through 12/31/2025, you get: Virginia Tech Football Board: 49,396 Virginia Tech Basketball Board: 10,820 So there you go.
H

So, from 7/1/2025 to 6/13/2026, basically a year...
Virginia Tech Football Board - 59,850 Virginia Tech Basketball Board - 33,679 I wonder how this less than 2-1 ratio, compares to monies invested.
Will Stewart Will Stewart OP

The free football board here is pretty dead (relatively speaking).
The subscriber board is very busy during football season. So, it's WAY more than a 2-1 ratio.
H
HokieNL
1mo
Would you classify the free Basketball Board as "less dead," perhaps?
Or, just less busy, relatively, on the Subscriber Board, during the season, compared to Football?
H
HokieNL
1mo
Well, Basketball is done, and Football yet to come, so...
Not really a fair comparison, until the end of the year. Amazed at the Softball numbers!

Here's an honest question. Do you IP ban them as well?
I'm not sure how it works today but back in the day when server admins had much more control over gaming servers, we would ban players from a server and then we would add a blanket IP ban on them to keep them from simply creating another account to cause further chaos. It wasn't perfect but it helped keep many of the problem players at bay. We never ran into an issue where someone who was in good standing had their IP blocked due to being similar to the problem player.

I can do that, yes.
But I have other tools for sniffing them out as well. I don't always see them right away, but re-registrants usually reveal themselves over time.

That Q&A had one statement which is not exactly true:
"We simply must return the boards to VT-related posts, particularly VT sports-related posts." The subscriber board is largely a medium sized clique of fellas musing on multiple topics unrelated to the above, ranging from various ailments (God bless them all) to old-man-yells-at-clouds stuff. Maybe that will change as we get closer to FB season.
Will Stewart Will Stewart OP
1mo
Not to be a jerk about it but you clearly didn't read closely.
I've said multiple times, including in that article, there's going to be a subscriber lounge created, and that I will have the ability to move post from onr board to another easily. That's going to take care of that problem. There's no sense raising a stink about it now until we get the new boards launched. If the new site and new boards are delayed until after football season, then I will raise a stink about it and take care of the problem now. But we anticipate launching the new site in a month or two, and I don't see the point in doing it right now.

I'm scared to ask how many I've had get deleted.
I don't know if it counts if a thread a commented on gets deleted or not.
Will Stewart Will Stewart OP
1mo
Nine.
But one of those was because it was posted on the wrong board. It's really easy to find out ... click your username in a post (which loads your profile) and scroll down to the Deleted Posts section. It can get a little confusing, and here's why: if I delete a post and type in a reason, then every response to that post also gets deleted, with the same reason. So the offender might actually be someone else, and you got caught up in the shrapnel. But if there's a political thread going on, and you partake in it, and the deletion of someone else's posts results in your response being deleted, well then, you should have stayed away from it in the first place.
VaTechie VaTechie
1mo
dang, I tried to add a little humor knowing it was going political
I think you are right on my humor should still get a ding. Rulz is do not make any response in a thread that is going political or already political. Good tough love for me and I should know better.

I think what happened to me recently that confuses me
was that I posted the initial news of the firing, and that got deleted seemingly because some of the comments in response had political undertones to them. I deliberately avoid bringing in my personal opinions, particularly since moving half way across the country.

Many times it's easier to just delete the post that started the thread.
That wipes out the scores of political comments below it, even if your particular post wasn't political.

Yeah, I guess I'm seeing it because I'm an admin.
In the new message board system on the new site, I believe I've coded it so that users can see their deleted posts (but other users can't) and can see their ban history (as opposed to just the latest ban occurrence.)

Users being able to see other users' ban history could have some value
It's how the rap sheet/leper's colony feature has always worked on Something Awful. So when you see a person has dozens of various probations and bans, it's easier to decide to just not engage with them in the first place, if they're always posting in bad faith, or if they're Just That Way.
I

True. Then again I bet even with my deleted posts, they were subposts
of the political posts and not political in of themselves.

There used to be a down-vote function...
Not exactly the same thing, but it would still give you some idea of who the board consensus view as pariahs. Can't remember exactly why it was removed, but I think some folks were abusing it.
VTHokie2000 VTHokie2000
1mo
The problem with the down vote function is some posters were using that
feature to signify they simply didn't agree with the post. While others were using it to signify a poster could be a "problem poster." There may have even been some posters who used the feature for both functions. I don't believe those functions should be used to represent the same thing. The danger with having both functions mean the same thing is the board runs a greater risk of only certain views and ideas will be expressed on here. Instead of a free flowing exchange of different views and ideas which is supposedly one of the core principles this country was founded on. If Will wants to structure TSL so only a limited number of views are allowed to be expressed on here, then he has every right to do so. However, that business decision will likely come with consequences that he will need to be prepared to accept.
