It's the old "keeping center" misnomer. Guy on the outside is working to

create angles and maintains movement. But because he isn't in the very center of the mat, "he's being passive" vs the guy who stands defensively in the center and simply spins around like he's an electric football player piece.

i think his fire is lit just fine. He does the same maniacal training that

Bo does (and Keegan too). He does the 5:00 am workouts daily and that doesn’t occur if the fire isn’t lit. i think he is simply an even keeled kid. Doesn’t get too high or low. Keeps it simple and smooth. Just shows more patience until an opening is there. even in his interviews, he takes a pretty low-key approach. With Bo’s machine gun mindset style, he’s willing to take more risk because he knows he’s gonna score as many points as he needs to dig out of any hole he’s in. I think Melvin is more cautious, but keeps his emotions in check.

My HS county tournament was a 8-team bracket over 2 days and I liked it

Everybody got a match in on Friday night, then the rest of the tourney was held Saturday. Everything was at a reasonable time throughout. Making weight twice kind of sucked, but at that point in the season you're very used to it. I think it really creates a home field advantage as well as the host team has the creature comforts of home. ** Edited by HokieToph at 7/10/2026, 11:42:22 AM

That's part of what SERTC funding is for ... This isn't a VT activity, it

is an RTC activity. I don't know if VT supplements the RTC in anyway (that's above my pay grade), but this is why donations to the RTC is so critical.

I wasn't joking ... I think he checks a lot of boxes of someone having an

internal struggle with what his sexuality is and what he is supposed to portray. And if that's the case, I hope he can find some help with acceptance before something horrible happens. If that isn't the case, I hope he finds the strength at some point to stop acting like a d-bag.

i think this guy has some suppressed sexual identity issues.

His overt, exaggerated machismo, his failed issues (that we know of) with women, his desire to wear as little as possible, his insane religious fanaticism, and sadly his crazy reckless and dangerous behavior… he’s definitely on the spectrum of hiding something imho. will be happy when his outlandish behavior is no longer a part of college wrestling.

We'll see. Haught is a heavy hands guy and it didn't rub off on Sonny too

much. But I think Sonny is prone to reaching too much and it costs him. He's got to work on that

I would like to seem him be heavier on his opponent's head and be stronger

on his snap downs. He likes to work from space, tap the head, and go for that low ankle shot. It's effective, but he can get sloppy with it as the match wears on ... reaching too much and getting off balance. I think if he would tie up more and apply pressure to the neck/head of his opponent, he can be more effective snapping the head down (or a throw by) rather that simply tapping the forehead. With his length, he could still keep his hips back in a tie up.

he is one of those do as I say not as I do people

Ultra religious espousing his beliefs on people and being ultra pious. And then gets busted in a prostitution ring which he has been going to regularly for a long period of time. just a fake person

I'd agree that Real's request is valid and should be approved. Infections

are life threatening issues that must be taken seriously. I do feel that Bo should be compensated somehow. If that means choosing the date that is best for him, choosing the best location for him, a weight allowance, etc ... just something to accommodate Bo's efforts and work preparing for Final X that has been postponed. Bo has multiple world team commitments as well as transitioning to college. That's a lot going on for him and he should be able to help manage the rescheduled Final X as "compensation"

Bo should get something out of this in my opinion. He's been managing his

training, travel schedule, mindset, and his weight for a specific date. A bit unfair to have the carpet yanked out from under him when he's been doing everything right. I'd like to see Bo get an extra pound or two at the re-scheduled Final-X so he doesn't have to go to his full weight cut twice.

My first political post ever ...

Which politician does Will Stewart look more like ... James Talarico? Or Mike Johnson?

Here's a scenario. His team is down by 21 just before halftime. Coach tells

him to kneel on it so they can regroup. He decides that down 14 looks a lot worse that down 21 so out of desperation, he tries to score on the last play and instead throws a pick-6. Betting on your team, even just the money line can create scenarios of desperation.

That's crap that Konopka got passed in latest flo rankings

Garett Kawczynski had a great U20 team trial but got smoked in the finals. Freestyle success shouldn't equate to folkstyle that much, certainly not enough to pass Konopka.

I played devil's advocate on Haught's hire since day 1 ... you can even

look it up. But I am glad they found a place for him on the staff. The guy is not afraid of work, is a physical specimen, and should be able to help reinforce strength and performance of our upper guys. I think he will thrive in this role!

I think Garland's days at UVa are numbered. They are no longer relevant and

the team as a whole is terrible. They scored 1/2 point at the NCAAs and Garland can't seem to recruit anyone of relevance. They can't even pull quality grad transfers from the portal and that's with being able to offer a master's degree from UVA. I'd bet a lot that next season is his last season. Heck, I couldn't even name one assistant coach over there without googling and I follow college wrestling pretty hard. I forgot the Paulsens are still there.

it's called keeping center and freestyle refs prioritize it over actual

motion. You can be the guy rotating around the guy standing in the center of the circle as you look to create angles and you will get dinged for passivity. It's the ridiculous part of freestyle that I struggle with because it isn't wrestling.

It's the speed with which Jax transitions to his different moves. Hoping

that workouts with BB will help with that. Bassett is probably the one guy who can simulate Jax's transition speed and repetoire

I've softened on him a bit. He's gotten some help and figured things out

with respect to maturity and handling his emotions ... at least from what little I have seen. I'm glad he still competes as I think he's the kind of guy who needs a physical outlet.

It must be exhausting for Mrs. Bassett to keep up with all of her sons'

accolades on her social media pages. Seems like a full time job. She may need an assistant soon :)

Cassel better be jammed freaking packed when Bo hits the mat next season.

I'm talking max capacity, standing room only packed. This is a once in a lifetime type talent that students, locals, and fans who have easy access to attend matches should not miss ... ever! NCAA champ, Hodge winner, World Champ, Olympic Champ, he'll likely accomplish it all with a big fat, freaking smile on his face the whole way. VT and the coaching staff need to market Bo's arrival big time.

As much of a Lax fam that I am (I played and I'm from Maryland), I'd rather

see a women's wrestling program added, much like ISU is doing. Be ahead of the ACC curve and become a great place to draw top talent from the eastern seaboard. states

Then perhaps say that rather than "he's no good". These guys, families, and

recruits certainly read these boards and comments by internet warriors can be offensive.

Well there is a right way and a wrong way to say things, and the original

post was the wrong way. These guys read these boards as do parents and recruits ... and their families. It's fine to be constructively critical, but people do get upset when crappy things are said by keyboard warriors.

Well, just because he didn't wrestle last year doesn't mean he wasn't still

around the guys off the mat. Those guys knew what was going on with him and didn't just cast him aside. Team chemistry won't be an issue. Maybe some will be more cautious in welcoming him back in full, but that's to be expected with 30+ different personalities on the team. All TJ needs to do is show his commitment to the team and the squad will be fine. If for some reason he can't manage to do that, Robie and Frayer will solve that problem quickly. I said it from the beginning, if he can figure out how to get through the things he was struggling with, then I'd love to see him back on the team. He's a good kid and if he's earned a second chance with Robie, then I have no worries about the team as a whole. ** Edited by HokieToph at 4/17/2026, 12:55:28 PM
