There's holes available. You just have to get to the gaps. - Frank Beamer

VMI will get a badly needed chunk of change, and our guys get to practice..

.. against some guys they haven't gone up against. The game is sold out, Blacksburg businesses will get a boost, and people will get a first look at some of Franklin's basic schemes. The backups will get some great reps. I don't understand all the over-the-top negative angst around this game. Other P4 teams play patsies to open the season. So what. Go enjoy a great day in Lane stadium. ** Edited by Culpeper Hokie at 7/31/2026, 8:54:01 AM

I think they are equating it to Texas' annual claim to the mythical...

... National Recruiting Championship that never seems to translate into national superiority in on-field performance. But Franklin clearly caveated his statement by acknowledging that it was still to be determined whether they can parlay the recruiting wins to wins on the field. Just haters looking for something to poke at.

Estimated 1,000 union soldiers died there during their incarceration...

Some of the burial ground is still visible. Most died of exposure, malnutrition, and disease in miserable conditions. Not someplace you'd want to walk around at night.

Haven't been on this planet long, have you?

This is an in state rivalry over a century old. The sh!t talk between the two fan bases is genetic at this point.

To a point, yes, perhaps. But playing your best players late in a game...

... where you're up 3 TDs just to get more points on a decided underdog, becomes counter-productive, in my view.

My titanium collection: 2 hips, left shoulder, right knee...

Had the hips done 10 years ago, the shoulder 9, and the knee in January. I'm back to playing basketball, running 10Ks, hiking, bike riding. Key is KEEP MOVING!!! I'm 71 years old, and couldn't be doing any of that without those incredible procedures. Do what the doctors tell you to do, and once you're out of the recovery zone, do a little more. Personal preference here, but everyone is different - Get off of the pain killers as soon as you're able. They were making me nauseous, sweaty, and depressed. Second time around, I went to Tylenol as soon as I could bear it, and got much better results. As always, everybody is different, and always consult your doctor. Pretty much everybody that's had replacements done will tell you they wonder why they waited so long, especially the hips. Good luck with your procedure! ** Edited by Culpeper Hokie at 7/6/2026, 4:40:17 PM

Used to frequent his bar/restaurant in Tysons Corner...

"Thor's". Great place. Group of classmates from my masters degree cohort would go there after class for drinks. He was always bartending or circulating the restaurant. Very engaging guy and would occasionally comp a drink or two.

I've analyzed ours a few times, and cutting cable is NOT cost effective..

...for us. My wife keeps telling me that we need to cut the cable because it's too expensive. So, I ask her what services she wants to keep, and I have the ones I want to keep. By the time those are added up, it's about the same as what I'm paying for the VZ Fios bundle with TV/Internet/Landline.

But none of that stuff happened/would have happened in a vacuum...

All of those scenarios are interdependent. It's not really answerable on its own.

There used to be a down-vote function...

Not exactly the same thing, but it would still give you some idea of who the board consensus view as pariahs. Can't remember exactly why it was removed, but I think some folks were abusing it.

If you drive over loose leaves on the highway at speed...

...they can easily enter the engine compartment and get sucked into the air cleaner intake. Check your cabin air filter. I'll bet you'll find the same stuff in there. ** Edited by Culpeper Hokie at 6/10/2026, 8:56:32 AM

How come nobody told me Volume II Bookstore was closing forever??

Can't believe it! No trip to the 'burg was ever complete without a stop at VII. Was down there today on some business and saw the sign on the door. All items 50% off through their closing day of May 28. RIP Volume II. 😞

If you're my age, it's recommended that you regularly check your nuts..

...because a fall from some broken mechanical apparatus could be catastrophic. >8-}

"4-star QB Peter Bourque to Virginia Tech?"

That just popped up on my feeds a little while ago. Says it came from an Athalon story. Any fire to that smoke? ** Edited by Culpeper Hokie at 5/8/2026, 1:39:54 PM ** Edited by Culpeper Hokie at 5/8/2026, 1:40:17 PM

Lane is probably going to need some structural fixes in the near future

I noticed some significant spalling and exposed rebar on some of the columns the last game I went to. So much so, that they had some of them wrapped in heavy fabric, I assume, to prevent debris from falling on people. If big repairs are in the offing, maybe that would be a good time to add some capacity. Just wish-listing.

Logistics is a BS self defeating argument...

It only takes about 45 minutes for a charter bus to get from ROA to Blacksburg. How is that significantly different from: FNT to MSU - 65 min BWI to UMD - 35 min EWR to Rutgers - 35 min IND to Indiana - 60 min ORD to Illinois - 120 min MKE to Wisconsin - 75 min LAX to UCLA - 45 min IAH to TA&M - 100 min BHM to Alabama - 60 min ATL to Auburn - 125 min MSY to LSU - 75 min MEM to Ole Miss - 75 min MCO to UF - 110 min JAX to FSU - 120 min ATL to UGA - 90 min BNA to Tennessee - 120 min So all the defeatists need to just stop the isolation bullsh!t.

Congress created Land Grant program. Pritchard, Saunders, Barringer...

Were all confederate officers, but Barringer was the only general. He was a UNC graduate. He married Stonewall Jackson's wife's sister. His nickname was "Old Clubby".

Not ACC schools, but...

... Son went to William & Mary, and Daughter (VT '21) went to George Mason for grad school. So, I have several GMU and W&M t-shirts and don't mind wearing those around (usually accompanied by a VT hat, though!) But, yeah, if either of them had gone to another ACC school, you sure wouldn't see me wearing a tiger paw, a big U, or crossed swords, for sure.

One of the big issues is getting down there early enough for nooners...

I can't get my wife to agree to leaving Richmond in time to get there early enough to make it worthwhile to set up a big tailgate. For noon games, I like to have everything packed up and start walking to the stadium by 11:00. That means to even make it worth setting all that stuff up, I want two hours to sit and enjoy it (meaning set up and ready by 9:00.) To do that, I'd need to be in the parking lot by 8:30. To get to Blacksburg by 8:30, I need to leave Short Pump by 5:20 AM. To leave by that time, we need to get out of bed by 4:50. She ~refuses~ to get up and leave that early. So, it's just easier to pack some subs and chairs on those days.

Mine have actually de-evolved a bit...

I used to do the whole pop-up tent, tables, chairs, grill, multiple meats, side dishes thing. Lately, I've just gotten lazy and only bring some chairs and maybe some pre-made subs. The bourbon consumption hasn't changed any, though! đŸĨ´

I feel bad that your ego is so fragile.

It's downright stupid that some are connecting a pregame entertainment mishap to the direction of the football program. Was it a commentary on the Minnesota Lynx's program when Red Panda fell and broke her wrist? Give me a break.

This is possibly the dumbest thing I've heard all day.

WTF does a skydiving accident have to do with James Franklin? He doesn't hire the entertainment. And it looked like there were unexpected crosswinds swirling around the stadium. It's not like the skydiver could kick in the afterburners to go for a go-around.

Nor at South-Central Louisiana State University...

Go SCLSU Mud Dogs! Although his star player was once ~falsely~ accused of cheating.
