Holy moly. Check the nuts and bolts on your pull down attic
Access ladder. I routinely check mine. But did not check the bolt that holds the arm that holds the spring. Was coming down after changing the upstairs air handler filter when the whole thing collapsed. One bolt and nut. Whew.

If you're my age, it's recommended that you regularly check your nuts..
...because a fall from some broken mechanical apparatus could be catastrophic. >8-}

doesn't hurt to check under your sinks now and then. I discovered a leak
that's been going on for a while

I handled a injury claim years ago where the nut came off on the spring
loaded arm and that thing unloaded on the back of the head of a guy going up the stairs. As I recall, it was a prospective buyer of the house who was looking in the attic. Pretty severe injury too.

We had to almost fully change the fasteners on our attic steps in our
house before last after a prospective buyer, who was pregnant, claimed it was too dangerous for her to climb up there. Ignoring whether or not that was good for her anyway, we did all that, got the pull-down stairs all nice and tight, and then they passed on the deal. In our new home, the attic pull down in the garage was installed backwards before the project manager noticed it. When they removed it and put it back in, the last section of steps that pulls down is unreachable if you're not at least 6'3'. Which I'm not. I have to get on my step ladder to open the attic hatch. ** Edited by PhotoHokieNC at 5/20/2026, 6:36:20 AM

Yikes! Sounds like a personal injury case! TIC
Great advice...the older I get, the more attuned I am to stuff like that.

Yep. He should sue the hoMEOWner. ;^)
And now you'll never pronounce the word hoMEOWner the same way you used to. You're welcome. =^)
