Newport Beach considered closing The Wedge at one time

Think this was in the seventies. The number of injuries and a few of fatalities prompted a resolution by the city council to close the area to swimming. A number of surfers who surfed the break argued in front of council that closing the break would reduce tourism and would not likely deter hardcore surfers, creating a nuisance enforcement issue. Ultimately the board decided not to close the break. I tried to find the exact time this was proposed, but all that would come up is the fact that they have closed the beach today through this afternoon because of the dangerous surf with waves reaching 20ft.
