ACC having 2 emergency calls with Presidents/Chancellors and ADs about
potentially adding Stanford and Cal.

Miami for Penn State
Clemson for Florida
Louisville for West Virginia
FSU for Tennessee
Benefits - FSU and Clemson are sick of the ACC. I am sick of Miami is back.
Penn State, Florida, and Tennessee have terrific fan support but are always overshadowed by Michigan and Ohio State or by Georgia and Alabama. Penn State, Florida, and Tennessee would thrive in the ACC as leaders of the pack instead of playing for 3rd place every year. Louisville has never done anything for me. I would much rather watch WVU playing football against ACC teams.

The following states are currently subject to California’s ban on state-funded and state-sponsored travel:
Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Indiana
Iowa
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Mississippi
Montana
North Carolina
North Dakota
Ohio
Oklahoma
South Carolina
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
West Virginia
Wyoming
Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts are O.K. for travel. Cal & Stanford will just have to play all of their away games against ACC schools in these states.

Pros.
They are desperate and likely able to be gotten cheap.
ESPN would probably pay a few bucks to get back into California and also those late time slots.
They are bodies, they matter for something.
Con
Not terribly exciting
Travel to those locations is horrible.
We have to watch the occasional late game.

Get the ACCN to the entire west coast and have a legitimate PAC-pod.
(In response to this post by wwhokie1)
Have UA, ASU, and Utah signed anything yet? Take those three and WVU and
turn the tables on the Big 12.
Perhaps ESPN wants to get them out of Fox's hands, or perhaps Fox wants to buy into the southeast and bid on a new ACC contract.

Picking up Nevada would actually be fun. Las Vegas is fun as is Reno and Lake Tahoe. Or this could be an opportunity to pick up one of the schools in Texas.

in turn they give ACC more money as that is a bunch of cable subscribers in California.

Instead they could use that to secure Stanford and Cal Berkeley in the ACC and perhaps give the ACC some sort of bump. They won't need to be spending it on the PAC12, and they could accomplish their goal of west coast games after 10 pm. Without doing it all ESPN is left with is some assortment of Arizona/Arizona State games for the Pacific Time Zone. The Big XII rights are also split with Fox. So they won't have as much flexibility unless they get West Coast PAC12 teams into one of the ESPN conferences.

And they could mix in an occasional Arizona or Arizona State Big XII Game since ESPN has part of the Big XII. I'm kinda thinking go ahead and include Washington State & Oregon State for some variety out there. It would put the ACC in those states as well.
(In response to this post by Lakeridgehokie)
I read any further expansion by ACC...
would cost every ACC school $1-3 million dollars plus the added traveling expenses for all sports. Cal and Stanford add no value to the ACC, that's why the Big 10 and Big 12 didn't take them. Oregon State and Washington State are even worse. I hope the ACC doesn't add any of those Pac-12 schools. I feel bad for those 4 schools but I feel like adding them is like a dirt poor family bringing in 4 more relatives when they can't even take care of themselves.
(In response to this post by HOO86)

Votes for the expansion. Schools are in a desperate need to find more money, not give money away.

Fox has scoffed up Southern California with the Big Ten move. Fox also has the Mountain West Conference. The Big XII puts ESPN in Arizona, but if they want California as well as Washington & Oregon for that matter, they will need to pay the ACC to take them.

Schools SHOULD care about that #1
#2, might be able to monetize via more research somehow.
#3, presumably not for all sports, just football and maybe hoops and baseball?
(In response to this post by JKHokie-RunFor32)
2y
Playing football against a good academic school means nothing.
We could play Stanford and Cal 6x each every season and it is not changing academics at VT.
Monetizing via more research somehow? I'd love to hear more about how and why that happens. lol.
(In response to this post by SpeakToDamien)
2y
They will absolutely take every opportunity to crow about academics when the opportunity presents itself, but they know that playing Stanford and Cal in football is a nothingburger academically.
(In response to this post by Big12 guy)

of him a couple of days ago, and he was willing to throw ASU athletics under the bus for the lame Apple contract. It absolutely matters in the AAU (academic) world.
He wanted absolutely nothing to do with the B12. maybe the documents aren't signed, and ASU and UTAH could still come to the ACC. Would be bad for the B12, but as a fan, you guys can have them.
(In response to this post by Pylons)
2y
He basically said he hoped the PAC-whatever would stay together and that they were excited about a new model with the Apple deal...they held on until it was obvious it was going to be PAC-nothing and then went B12.
I've only watched about half of it, but only about 1% had anything to do with academics so far. Crow talked about all the PAC-->B12 schools being AAU...expressing zero opinion about going to a conference that prior only had 1 AAU member.
Maybe point me to the part that is relevant to what I said?

but, Cal is severely financially constrained and a massive hit to their travel budget is likely not realistic. The rights associated with the Bay area may not be the windfall you believe either and I doubt the moniker Power 5 Ivy generates much respect and even less fear. While probably not the catastrophe of the recent Bud Light ad misstep I doubt it is really a needle mover absent other yet undisclosed actions.

(In response to this post by TerryD)

ND and Stanford only began playing each other annually in 1991,
Stanford's value to ND is that it allows the Irish to end every season in California (for coaches to stay and recruit), along with USC.
The two schools don't have much of a relationship otherwise.
(In response to this post by Hardcore_Hokie)
2y
I'm not sure what sort of arrangement ND/Stanford have, but whatever it is, it doesn't necessarily change if Stanford becomes an ACC member.
ND has played Cal 5 times. Once in the last 5+ DECADES.
And none of ND's football games are really "ACC games." They're games against ACC opponents. ND-Stanford has never been a "Pac 12 game" and wouldn't magically become an "ACC game."
(In response to this post by Hardcore_Hokie)
2y
Nevermind the benefits of ESPN and the ACC Network adding California, the largest state in the country, with 40 million people (more than 4 times the population of #12 Virginia).
If it makes sense $$ wise for the ACC and ESPN they will make it happen. I certainly hope they do.
(In response to this post by Pylons)
2y
And again, ND has played Cal ONCE IN 50+ years...why do you think they'll start playing there now...any more than they would play at VT or NCSU or Pitt?
The other stuff has nothing to do with what you posted and I replied about.
(In response to this post by Hardcore_Hokie)
2y
ESPN would very much like to keep as many ND games as possible on their family of networks, adding Stanford makes that one game every other year on them. Starting next year, ESPN will only be guaranteed to have ND games on when they play at ACC and SEC schools.
(In response to this post by Pylons)
2y
Stanford could simply be included to ND's "play 5" agreement...no net change in ESPN ND games.
It's also not inconceivable that ND says "sorry, we already had a deal with Stanford outside of the ACC...that stays outside of the ACC." No net change in ESPN ND games.

(In response to this post by Vippie1)
2y
some more travel partners (like Oregon St. or Wazzou) or a few schools that can bridge the distances between the coasts (like Tulane, SMU, or Memphis) would be ideal if Stanford and Cal come into the league, but there's probably no financial benefit to adding any of those 5 schools.

The only mystery to me is why is there an emergency meeting. Does any other conference want them? Will ESPN give the ACC more money for these two additions or are Cal & Stanford willing to join the ACC for free. Cal’s athletic department is a complete financial disaster.
