Transferring out
Well, Charlise Dunn and Maddie Vejsicky are gone. Dunn had serious promise. Does this mean we are bringing in a transfer or they just didn't want to sit again with King and Amoore? Ugh.

Cool, go find some players in the portal.

Also, we are probably in as good a position as we could be to attract really strong talent right now. Even two of the commentators mentioned how much they would like to play for Kenny Brooks. I wish Maddie and Charlise well. They always seemed into the game even though they didn't play.

Neither played that much, even in the "warm up" season.
Wenzel might be the best of the group from that class and she red-shirted.
Kenny probably has a few portal transfers in the works. The player from JMU would be a great get.
As another poster said, the extra Covid eligibility year has put some pressure on roster management, but the portal probably has had more affect on the situation at this point. Kenny has had good success in the portal and after this Final 4 run, he should have even more success.

eligibility, NIL and, for a limited period here, the extra covid year has created a different dynamic to playing time and roster management. People saying Kenny has to play the freshmen and criticizing him for not playing them in blowouts could be right but, they MIGHT be ignoring the possibility he is looking out for the young ladies best interests. If they are not ready to play and contribute in the regular rotation saving them a year in eligibility either at VT or as a transfer by not playing them is to their benefit. Those not patient enough to wait or earn their turn can transfer with full eligibility in tact.
It also creates options in how you manage recruiting. Do you allocate more resources to high school kids that are longer term development projects or mine the portal for collegiate tested talent ready to plug and play. There are a lot of moving parts these days compared to earlier times I think.

in 3-5 years they may not even recruit HS kids but TP only. Not that that’s what they want to do just what the situation will dictate.

unless you have an in with a 5 star that is highly likely to play right out of high school why would you spend time and resources for a kid that could portal. I think the tipping point is not NIL or the portal but, immediate eligibility. I also think a reasonable compromise that might slow things would be to stall immediate eligibility until a player has completed their sophomore year. A transfer earlier than that requires the player to sit a year.

eligible to redshirt.

if he spoke to them about redshirting and maybe they declined? I think there are merits to all sides in this thread.
It can become a morale issue if players are working hard in practice and not getting minutes even in blowouts. It is also a matter of developing depth if the injury bug bites. On the other side if somebody is really not physically ready for whatever reason throwing them out there just to get time may damage confidence and development. Also when a coach has a rotation he is comfortable with he might be hesitant to mess with the chemistry. Finally, being down a coach may impact development, practice and in game rotation management.
Maybe if TSL gets him on a podcast they can explore his philosophy on roster management and playing time. I am not saying what he does is right or wrong from a long term perspective but, it obviously worked out for him this year.

...which might suggest a recruiting miss. Or it might just be the law of averages.
Maddie seemed to really enjoy herself on the bench, etc. She never appeared unhappy. Less clear on Dunn. Just my observation from watching the games. No inside info or anything.

having a short bench, when you are blowing out a team by 40 and you can't let your backups in, then you definitely believe they aren't good enough to even play against low-level teams. We are great in the portal, always tend to find contributors (Owusu being one of the few exceptions, mostly due to attitude, not ability) and starters, but our batting average for recruits being successful hasn't been very good last few years.

The second string, and even walk-ons, work just as hard in practice as the stars/starters and make all the same sacrifices. But no rewards. It’s human nature to expect some recognition for your contribution. I noted several games where we had huge leads against inferior competition, yet CKB stuck with a seven player rotation. That’s insulting. I’m not close to the program but I think I understand human nature pretty well. We are in danger of creating dissension on this team because of this. Maybe we’re already there. Others have opined about the inability to develop reserves if they never get on the court. I agree with that. It’s very difficult to be successful in tournament play with a short bench.

When you are up by 40, you have to play them so they can get better.

to return we might not have had any players left who had worn a VT uni. Lots of recruiting misses between Georgia and this Fall's incoming class.

So room for 5 transfers in addition to 4 Fr

Looks like WBB has a 14 player roster limit. So, with 4 returning and 4 freshman coming in it seems that KB has room for 6 players if he uses all of his scholarships.

Even Alexis Morris was a transfer. Not one original player, Kim Mulkey had to start over this year. That is the crazy story behind this, no one gave them a chance, the coaching job was elite level. They played against squads of experienced seniors all year. VT is in good shape next season, 3 core players are seniors and 5th year seniors. Coach B can hit the transfer portal to get key players to fill in the holes. He doesn't have to start over. We are fortunate Kitley, Amoore and King are coming back. We can make another deep run.

Nope. But if we've had recruiting misses in the last few years we need to stockpile the team with portal players for this and possibly next year depending on how the new class performs. They are all top 100 players so maybe we'll have a better success rate.

scared we only have 3 players returning, we can do something similar, hit the transfer portal with key players to complete the team. It can be done, we can make another big run next season.

I don't know how that compares to other programs. It makes me pay even less attention to recruiting. I'm guessing 1 of the 4 incoming freshmen will last more than 1 year.

who don't play. Has any that portaled from VT WBB proven they can play at an ACC level anywhere?
Even in football, with all that have left VT, only one (so far) proved they could play at an upper ACC level? Robinson was close but no cigar.

Good point.
COVID limited the contact that coaches had with recruits and made it harder to evaluate talent and fit.

Dunn might have wanted more minutes than she'll get with being behind Amoore and King and probably Wenzel as well next year.
We are going to be far better off with Amoore and King eating up minutes at the 1 and 2/3 next year anyway.
And then there is the portal. If we landed a prime target like Kiki Jefferson, the minutes would continue to dwindle for Dunn and Vejsicky.

She's actually probably the best guard on the team and Kenny told her he'd rather have other people playing her minutes instead of her. He'd rather have portal transfers and rookies instead of somebody who barely played for the entire Final Four campaign, even though that player is way better.
Stupid Kenny....

The minute they go in the portal, they have given up their schlarship. If they decide to stay, the VT can decide whether to give them a scholaship or not. By watching them practice for a year, Kenny will know if they are worth holding on to or if the scholarships can be better used with someone else.

Next season, no scholarship. If fact, if someone goes into the portal now, they are guaranteed nothing after May.

No stirring of the roster, limited opportunities for anyone else to play. Don't get me wrong -- I love that Kitley and King are coming back. But it's just a fact that people may not stay when their potential playing time keeps getting pushed back. I sure hope CKB makes a big commitment to getting more of the roster involved next season.

play subs. You can still play a bench. So the issue is not having entrenched starters. The issue that players didn't step foot on the court AT ALL over the non-creampuff part of the season. That is telling. It is hard for people to say "i love this team" if they have no chance to play at all. Even when players got into foul trouble, no one got on the court. Vejsicky did in one game...

The world of 4-5 year players is over, it’s all about reloading in the portal every year if you don’t run a complex system.
Neither are a big loss, Dunn is the more promising of the 2 and it sucks to lose an Aussie but we’ve got 4 better players coming in as freshmen. She may have played as a deep rotation piece, Vesjicky likely wouldn’t play until junior year.
Rotation will probably be:
PG - Amoore, Nelson
G - Wenzel, Suffren
G - King, Baker
F - Transfer, Transfer
C - Kitley
Ideally we could redshirt some of the freshmen and replace their roles with transfers
