Look at what goes on in many Arab countries, particularly with women. Our society doesn't agree with any of that nonsense but guess what? It isn't our country. When a foreigner visits our country, we expect them to obey our rules. We should expect the same of ourselves even if their rules are stupid and inhuman.

Breaking their law. However, your example is all the more reason we shouldn’t get involved in a prisoner swap especially when it involves the USA releasing a dangerous criminal. Trades like that only perpetuate the problem.

It is their country, not yours, not mine. They play by a different set of 'rules' but since Americans cannot apply our rules and values on the rest of the world then it is what it is. Much like many other countries in the world, Russia is a banana republic ... which is all the more reason Ms Griner should appreciate the Country she lives in.
I remember when I was a kid my (late) Dad almost got stationed in the UK and we were all excited. Then we found out that the UK forced pets to be quarantined for (I think) 3 months when entering their country. I thought it was completely stupid - if they could be tested for everything before we left, why do they have to be quarantined. Guess what, their country, their rules. That example is obviously not on the same level as this but the point is the same. Does it make sense that American women have to dress the way Arab women dress when in an Arab country? Not to us, no, but it does to them and that is all that counts.

you are comparing UK jurisprudence with its real laws and real systems to one without either. Agreed she should have been purer than Caesar's wife but that doesnt excuse things- the Russians were going to get an American. Russia could pick YOU or ME off the corner doing nothing wrong , throw us in jail, make spurious charges, and convict you. So it really has little to do with respecting ones cultures or "laws" .

...here in the United States and did not consider how foreign countries might not be so fair. Is her sentence bogus? Of course it is. No one is suggesting it's not. But what really sucks is that Griner's mistake literally may put all of us at risk if the U.S. is forced to release an a terrorist in order to persuade Russia to release her.
The bottom line is, if you can just not be an idiot when you go overseas, you'll likely be OK. I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make - we all agree that Russia is corrupt, but that shouldn't be a secret to ANYONE, so: don't be a moron if you go there. It's really that simple.

I have no issue with Griner other than her distaste for her Country - I hope she is released because she is a US citizen that is being unfairly detained. I also have never said that what Russia is doing is right, moral or fair ... it is none of those things. What I AM saying is that they can do whatever the hell they want to do in their own country. Our rules don't apply there. And you are correct, Russia could pick me off a corner, make up charges, and put me in jail for absolutely no reason. Fortunately my job won't allow me to travel there so I don't have to worry about it.
It is an injustice by our standards. Our standards don't apply in Russia.

if you served America, like Paul Whelan, most US citizens are more willing to make a lopsided trade to get you back. If you knelt for the US Flag for years, only a small percentage of folks would (and should) take the same approach.
Does anyone in their right mind think we should trade a terrorist effectively responsible for killing thousands for someone who deeply hates the US? LeBron James is complaining ... can we trade him for her instead of Bout?

but I fully agree that she is living by Russian laws over there and not ours. To her credit, she plead guilty and seems to be handling things as well as she can under the circumstances. I would just hope she would come home with a deeper appreciation for this Country than she left ... but skeptical that it will happen.
