As a govt contractor, wife and I are faced with arbitrarily losing our jobs

...and at 53, I worry that nobody would hire an old guy (software engineer with leadership). So I have played out my worst case scenario...moving out of NOVA, perhaps to another state and retiring way early. I hope I don't have to do this but we could probably make it work

I did this in 2023 with my wife and daughter in the summer time.

We took a bus that took us on the 4 hour drive and provided lunch at a restaurant in Normandy. The whole tour was excellent as we stopped at several of the beaches, a museum and of course the cemetery. It was a long day but well worth it. It didn't get dark until very late, so we still enjoyed al fresco dining in Paris afterward.

Not sure. 57% is lower than when I applied.

I think the overall acceptance rate was in the high 70s in the late 80s when I applied, but i wonder what the acceptance rate was for the College of Engineering. My youngest got in with a 3.65/1320 this year.

Social distancing, masks (common sense) and the vaccine mitigated ...

the death count, but more importantly slowed the spread of the virus to help overrun hospitals. For everyone who shouted "it only kills 1 percent!" , that 1% plus all the others that got close was enough to overrun hospitals and massively strain our health care system.

C’mon guys. It wasn’t a catch.

But the refs screwed up by calling it a catch. Then they screwed up the replay review. But it really wasn’t a catch. And nobody will care in two days.

They look half assed.

The few that i saw, the paneling was uneven/ripply. The design is something my son would have built with Legos when he was six years old.

Holy crap...that is crazy

Made me think of the crazy people who ride the white line in Sedona.

Capital Grille was just meh for me.

Business expense account place. Not a great experience. Just average.

How did everyone experience the eclipse?

The kids and I had a great view in Akron, OH. It was incredible to see in person. Nine hour drive home to NoVA and getting home at 1am was totally worth it. I didn't get much in the way of decent pictures though.

Sigh...

We're to the point where literally every catastrophe has some wacko right wing conspiracy theory attached to it.

The Lounge 2 y ago

I am taking my kids to see it around Akron.

I am not looking forward to the 5.5 hr drive and I hope the weather cooperates.

This is excellent.

I think this is the first time I have seen someone playing a fanned fret guitar where I actually liked the song. (as opposed to math rock bands like Polyphia that just don't do it for me)

The Lounge 2 y ago

I am definitely a grumpy old man.

And it's probably why i miss proper rock bands playing the halftime shows and lament that we haven't seen a commercial on the level of "Terry Tate, Office Linebacker" in years.

The Lounge 2 y ago

It's the most generic championship game out there.

Agree about the corporate crowd. The commercials used to be funny/touching but now they all suck. The halftime shows are generally boring and predictable.

I think about the losing Superbowl QBs too...

Tony Eason Rex Grossman Chris Chandler Donovan McNabb... Also Peyton Manning was a shell of himself when he won the Superbowl for the Broncos.

The Lounge 2 y ago

Maybe these days, but plenty of coaches have won with mediocre QBs

Ditka with Jim McMahon Gibbs with Rypien and Williams (I think Theismann was a star) Gruden with Brad Johnson Brian Billick with the Dilfer/Tony Banks combo

He's right.

Unless my team is in the Superbowl, I couldn't care less about watching 18 minutes of actual play (that seems high). It is all the other parts of the spectacle that make me want to watch. Also, she's a great singer and an even better songwriter. I would love to see her do a SB halftime down the road.
