which makes you wonder how much is good storytelling

Little ego maniac who always got what he wanted and took advantage of every angle, legal and otherwise. That pretty much describes almost every person of power in business and politics, everywhere in the world. Some are better able to control the narrative and treat people well so they will be more likely to focus on the positive things the person did, rather than the negatives. Reality is, as terrible a person as Danny is, the vast majority of people in his circle are pretty much the same, but have better people skills. Plus, had he been able to put the right people in place and let them do their job with the Redskins, he would have been a hero, not a villain (history is written by the winners).

May not be allowed to, but absolutely can

the idea that an NCAA rule, a rule from an organization that has lost every defense of every rule it has attempted to defend over the last decade is going to stop kids from gambling is laughable. Right now college athletes are second only to politicians in entitlement and invincibility. The idea that players are not gambling and that there haven't been games effected by gambling is just silly. There is too much money involved and too many young people with invincibility complexes for it not to. I agree with TH, gambling is going to cause a massive problem in college sports and likely sports in general, but it won't matter because people are stupid and gambling is addictive. The ultimate proof of the hypocrisy of sports is that there is a sports book inside the stadium the Cincinnati Reds play in and Pete Rose is not in the hall of fame for gambling.

PA has 5 according to wiki, 4 of which are active

3 on lake Erie (one of which is deactivated), one on an inland lake in NE PA and the 5th in Philly

kid is going to have a rough life in Australia

cries when being chased by sheep.....what happens when the other million things there that can kill you on a daily basis show up.

it is pretty easy to do,

haven't watched an NBA game in decades, an NFL game in a decade, watched maybe 2 college FB games at the start of this season but quickly lost interest. Maybe 1/2 a CBB game last year, none this year. I do watch baseball, but I have the MLB app so I can watch live without paying for cable. Once you stop giving a crap about it, it is easy to ignore and the players, owners and networks made it pretty easy to stop giving a crap.

Always reminded me of the big tilapia craze in the 90s

it became the best protein, sold everywhere, especially Costco. Then dirty jobs did a show about fish farms and you found out the reason it was so plentiful and cheap is that it was the fish they put in the last tank at the bottom of the hill below all the good fish in order to clean the water before it was discharged back into the river systems. And we all know what runs downhill. Wife began to refer to it as poo fish and it disappeared from our table pretty much overnight.

bottom line, if you want live sporting events, you have to get live TV

which is for all intents and purposes "cable" but without the wire. The idea of cord cutting is a bit overplayed, IMO. Yes you can cancel the cable TV service from your local provider, but you have to pay about as much to get it from a streaming provider if you want any live events other than what you can get with an antenna. Keep in mind, the content owners own all the distribution services, so there is no way to get just this or that, because they don't make money that way. To me, the best solution is find something to do and stop watching live sports then you don't need "cable".

had to go to NN last night to pick up someone at the train station

untreated roads were fine, it just blew away. The JRB and the treated roads were slick because the snow was melted.

I remember that winter, lived in Vienna

Biggest memory is that we had a decent snow cover, maybe 6" when it got real cold. The snow pack iced over and became so hard that we were able to sled on those old runner sleds and stay on top of the ice without breaking through it. I lived on the backside of a golf course and we found a fairway that was a long (like 500 yds) downhill slope. Didn't seem like much of a slope until you got on a sled sliding over ice and picked up speed for that long.

I don't-, and that is one of the many reasons why

But that proves my point...society has not only become ignorant to basic concepts, but also has lost the ability to follow one of the oldest rules... better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, then to open it and remove all doubt.

Try an insulating blanket

I'd never put one on a gas heater but for electric it would help reduce heat loss. my electric bill has been high this winter too, but that's because I installed a thermostat timer on my pool pump that kicks on when temps get below freezing (rather than having the lines blown out in the fall). We've had more sub freezing nights this year than since I moved here 5 years ago, but again, I understand the concept so I don't need to be told by the electric company why my bill is up.

as you're making the box smaller, had flash backs to the jerk...

to the left of bicentennial glasses... anything in this 3 inch area, including the chicklets but not the erasers

The Lounge 1 y ago

I received an email from the Gas company "High bill explanation"

their explanation.... it was cold last month, colder than the previous months, so you used more gas. HOLY F%*K, seriously...is that how that works? The fact that the gas company feels it needs to send a message to people letting them know their gas bill went up because it's cold out is a sign of just how whiny and stupid we have become as a society.

It's a silly debate, players today have better training, better equipment..

etc. So, would Gretzky today be the same person with the same equipment from his era? No, he'd be better too. He was a phenom, head and shoulders above his peers. Kind of like Vick in 1999-2000, no one like him, faster, quicker, better instincts and played a style that was very different. Question is, would he be as much better now compared to his peers than he was then...probably not. The overall talent of the league is better. Ovi at his prime was one of the best of his peers, not heads and shoulders better. But, he did use his body more, didn't have the level of talent around him, etc. So both are amazing.

if living with a teacher is a discussion, there is a lot of stuff going on

thus that kind of conversation should have drawn immediate red flags and involvement of people who's job it is to protect kids. So lock the crazy ***** up, find a home for the baby outside that community and begin a massive rip through the school admin, social services and anyone else involved in that community.

Had a mouse climb into the fan unit in my furnace once

it died and desecrated, sticking to the fan blade. When the system kicked on, it threw it out of balance and caused it to tear itself apart, chunks of plastic blew out, shredding all kinds of stuff to the point the whole unit had to be replaced.... that sucked.

The Lounge 1 y ago

too bad they don't make hams here any more

no slaughter operations in Smithfield anymore. They produce packaged meat products only now. :( All the hogs are sent to NC now.

The Lounge 1 y ago

Almost non-stop helo traffic North of Smithfield this AM

Navy MH 53s and Seahawks. Only 1 at a time, but going back and forth rather than the normal transiting through. Seem to be heading toward Newport News, over the James West of the JRB.

which is my concern, is the test ahead of the ability to understand it?

my daughter had strange things show up on her sonogram, brand new tech, higher res, etc. Problem was, there wasn't enough understanding of what it meant. We were told all sorts of things up to an including she would be still born. Imagine living through that for 7 months...then she was perfectly healthy. Wasn't anything we could do with that knowledge other than wait, so....

The Lounge 1 y ago

ahhh....I knew there was a hitch

when you don't pay for something, you are the payment.

The Lounge 1 y ago

Anybody here have a cancer blood test?

The theory is it tests for blood markers that provide an early detection of many types of cancers. If positive, you get more in depth screening. Employer is offering it as a benefit, one fully paid a year just like a physical for those over 50 or in high risk categories. Seems like a no-brainer.

normal subdivisions from any other state aren't built in a tinderbox

thus adjustments should have been made to create breaks. The houses can be close in clumps, but then there need to be large breaks so that if one clump catches, it doesn't just roll into the next. Fires and floods aren't going to be stopped, they are part of nature, but when you build in areas prone to that, you have to limit damage through effective planning.

Update on Cybertruck explosion theories

One of the theories was that he didn't kill himself because the muzzle flash wasn't visible and he could have been killed elsewhere and used the auto-drive feature to pull up to the hotel. Brandon Herrera just posted a video on Youtube that addresses both and the answer is.... No muzzle flash visible with windows up or down (he did windows down because his windows are tinted and he wanted to ensure no argument about non tinted windows) and no, the car won't drive itself with a dead person behind the wheel.

The Lounge 1 y ago

I wouldn't buy 1 at that price

it's good, but not 5x the price of real good stuff good.

The Lounge 1 y ago

Agree, there is a lot of overpriced Meh on the market right now

There is some great stuff in the $30-$50 range and a lot of stuff just like it in the $50-$90 range in a fancy bottle.
