It was much colder when we were jumping out of a C130. Contact frost bite concerns that night with any exposed skin on exit from the bird.

...can't imagine jumping out of an airplane.
Burrrrrrrr!

We had to sleep in survival shelters for 1 night with no heat
Me and my Ranger buddy shared a survival shelter that night and it was absolutely miserable.

-65F wind chill Warren, PA 1982
Same weekend as the Freezer Bowl. Took our husky out for a walk just to say I did it.

The wind chill was 40 below on the mountain. Had to go inside and thaw after every run.

while on a ski trip in Montana.
I think it eventually warmed up that day once the sun came out to about 5 deg. But when we got the snowmobile rental facility before the sun came up, the thermometer there showed 40 below.
Luckily it was a sunny day with zero wind. I can't imagine a day like that with a driving rain.

The boiling water freezes in the air before it hits the ground.

but it was kind of an experiment, I went "max protect" big old school down jacket, long johns, snow hiking boots etc. etc. I was comfortable but can't say I ever got warm. Day hike from where I lived in panhandle MD.

Ft AP Hill, March/April 1992(?), don't know what the temp was
but my National Guard infantry unit was training that weekend and it was so cold they let us build campfires and made us sleep two to a sleeping bag

the standpoint of worrying about frozen pipes, etc. Feels like some time between 2011 and 2016ish, we had a spell where the low temps were single digits nearing zero for almost a week straight? Had a frozen water line for days that scared the Shhhhheeeeeeeatt out of me, that luckily thawed out without harm. Will be dripping that line starting tonight again to hopefully avoid, not to mention setting my alarm in the middle of the night to be able to run hot then cold then drip hot again, which is the line that freezes first.

Probably Blacksburg around the time the Dolphins and 49'ers played in the
Super Bowl. Jan 20, 1985. Whole country was frozen. Blackburg had a wind chill of about negative 45.
And the VT Power steam system failed on the prairie side of O'Shag, even floors.
Oh, and I grew up in Rochester, NY. Lived in CT for 16 years or so and am now back near Rochester. And the coldest I remember was Blacksburg.

we would cut through the ground floor hall of Pritchard to get to Dietrich, I’m sure to the annoyance of the Pritchard ground floor dwellers.
