the next two USN aircraft carriers will be named after Bill Clinton and W
I think I'd prefer to see a return to British names like Indomitable or Dreadnought. I'm not sure boats named after any US prez from recent decades is going to strike fear into the hearts of our enemies.

Are they going to change the carrier designs? The current model seems...
obsolete. In this era of drones, it seems antiquated to be putting large carriers to sea designed around human piloted planes. It seems like a mini carrier full of different types of drones (attack, survey, cargo transport) would be more efficient and increase our ability to project power across the globe. But that's just my armchair rambling based on absolutely zero research.
Vienna_Hokie Vienna_Hokie
Buffs dumping clouds of drones seems like a better approach
`lag `lag
You know how that goes, fighting the last war...
I do know years ago there were ideals like basically barges of drones (basically those large ones) Watching a lot of the footage in the Ukraine I hope someone's paying a lot of attention...and I imagine they are. I remember years ago talking about bringing the aircraft carriers out after the nuclear attack, like each carrier doesn't have an ICBM targeting them at this very moment. Things move quickly in warfare tactics.

We've been naming carriers after politicians for years, unfortunately.
It's a joke that there's a carrier named after John Stennis and NOT one named after Admiral Spruance. A destroyer? C'mon.
Chris Coleman Chris Coleman
I don't even know who Stennis was, TBH.
PhotoHokieNC PhotoHokieNC
I slept in his bed at his home in DeKalb, MS. (humble brag follows)
Sen Stennis was huge in the early days space program and naval $$ appropriations during his congressional career. There's still a Stennis Space Center in MS. In the late 1980s and early 90s I belonged to an artists' association in Winston-Salem NC. At an awards ceremony for artists who'd won purchase awards from regional corporations. I was one of those artists because I had been doing acrylic painting then. At that ceremony one of the other artists was an older guy whose wife was Sen. Stennis' daughter, Margaret. Struck up a wonderful friendship with them and a few years later they returned to live in her childhood home. I visited them once and as their guest of honor they put me in their guest bedroom which had been the Senator's when he lived there and raised a family. They showed me photos taken by Navy photographers when they'd been invited to dedicate the USS Stennis, where Margaret had been designated as the one to do that. Amazing people, all of them. I was so lucky to have known them. ** Edited by PhotoHokieNC at 1/14/2025, 5:19:42 PM ** Edited by PhotoHokieNC at 1/14/2025, 5:20:47 PM ** Edited by PhotoHokieNC at 1/14/2025, 5:22:26 PM

I served under WJC and
was not particularly impressed with his handling of the military. Then again I was National Guard and I assume you were active duty so we may have had different experiences.
AirborneHokie96 AirborneHokie96
I served under him. I wasn't fond of his budget cuts for the Army but
He was the last President to balance the budget. I also had a friend that served in the WH Communications Office who went into the assignment a staunch Republican but ended up loving WJC. He said WJC could make a friend in any room and had "it" as far as people skills. The Clinton Administration thought that Infantry would not be needed anymore. That was a wrong assumption in the 2000s and it took us a while to get things up to speed with equipment to protect the Grunts.

Worked with a guy who served on Air Force One
Said Bill was super nice to the civilian and military crews associated with AF1 as was Chelsea. He also said HRC was actually worse than characterized, and they dreaded when she traveled.

I've never met anyone who's worked around her that had anything good to say
And a good bud worked in the White House Comm Room during the Clinton Presidency, but he wasn't the only person I knew who worked around there...he was just the closest to the Clintons. And yes, most people I've talked to liked Bill personally.

I remember a GHWB interview when they were talking about Bill, and
he talked about how much they like him, and how well they all get along, and how often they got together. When asked about Hillary, his only response was they didn't know her. That was it. I imagine that wasn't all he had to say. I can't remember if it was the HBO doc or another interview.

Clinton WH and GOP Congress were the last bipartisan collaborators
Not saying everything the collaborated on was successful, but they were able to work together. I know Reagan and Tip O'Neill were good friends as well. No chance of that anymore, both parties being equally culpable.

There's a reason you want someone to be dead for 25 years before you start
naming things after them. Beamer's the only recipient of the Joe Paterno award...and still is.
