of course we do...but that's art right..so it's OK...or whatever
don't let logic get in the way of a good canceling

Whataboutism at its finest. I find it weird that so many people are
tripping over themselves trying to defend what was obviously a mean-spirited slur that even the person who used it called "abhorrent". I don't really care if he's "cancelled" or not but it was beyond stupid to say. It would be bad enough to say it in public but to say it in public, multiple times, on a radio broadcast demonstrates a lack of awareness and common sense and that's before we even get to the actual word itself. Regardless, no matter how you slice it, Huggins is not the victim here. ** Edited by AbsolutVT03 at 5/10/2023, 6:05:05 PM

Twenty years ago they'd have a parade (not a gay one) in Morgantown for him
Today, he's toast. There will probably be a gay (+ all of the other letters) parade, demonstration, riot, etc. I believe you live your own life by how you want to live it. But don't force it on everyone else.

Using the word Catholic probably didn't help him.

Not forced into but forced to accept and celebrate it. And please

Has anyone ever met an Xavier basketball fan? My Grandmother went there
she wasn't a $$$#$# or whatever he said on the radio i'm pretty sure - or Catholic though- but then again I never heard her mention the basketball team either- so what does that say ** Edited by bigbadbird at 5/9/2023, 8:40:13 AM

"Freedom of speech" is between you and the government. We have laws agains
defamation. Huggins' incident lands in the slander catagory. ** Edited by IB4TECH at 5/9/2023, 9:02:56 AM
Vienna_Hokie Vienna_Hokie OP
No, it doesn't. What he said is offensive, not slanderous
slander and defamation are legal terms. This is not a legal issue, it is a PR issue.
IB4TECH IB4TECH
I'm just pointing out the "freedom of speech" thing. You are correct but
if Huggins made the comment directly to the individual, wouldn't it be defamation?
H
Hokie622
Still not defamation. Saying mean things is not defamation. Saying false
things that damage reputation is defamation.
V

Depends upon terms of employment
I’d be walked out if I publically made that comment. My boss’s boss who is an SVP is a married gay guy with kids so imagine how that would go over.

still doesn't make it defamation. Absolutely could get you fired though

Free speech has consequences, but we live in a very delicate society...
When a career can be terminated, even after an apology, because a derogatory word was said in an impromtu fashion to describe fans who were apparently throwing sexual objects on the court. It didn't seem like a rant or a hate-filled response, but rather a very poorly chosen response that attempted off-the-cuff humor to a rival at the expense of a marginalized group. I would think an apology would suffice, but who knows as the crucifiers are ready.

Agree, but we live in a world of candy asses that can't

He's an incredibly highly paid employee of the state of WV
while private funds may pay most of his comp, and his free speech is certainly protected by the constitution, WVU is free to fire him and likely will. Actions have consequences.

Freedom of speech does not equal freedom from consequences. Most employers
are going to have some sort of clause that involves making the company look bad especially in the official capacity of the job. In theory it should be fairly easy for most people to not go on the radio and use slurs... I'm not sure that's too much to ask from anyone let alone a basketball coach paid millions of dollars a year.
H
hokieZ71
At this stage in the game, it's not worth arguing
Everybody who has an opinion isn't changing it. Probably best for this thread to get nuked before it goes where fate wills it.
J
jesuisvtguy
Worth noting... it wasn't a racial slur
It's a derogatory word that society used commonly just a few decades ago, but is now on the list of words when uttered becomes career destroying. On one hand, I don't condone using offensive language and it's nice to see repercussions. On the other hand, when it's foolishly said in the context of "joking around" and apologies are issued immediately, I don't condone ending someone's career and reputation because of it.
G
GCHokie34
The N-word was common once...
Doesn't mean that its use was ever ok, and certainly not that it would be ok moving forward
1980VT 1980VT
It's not common now?
Walk down the hallway in many high schools / middle schools and if its a group of angry young people the word is flying out left and right. All races are using it towards others and each other. It doesn't make it right back then or now. But, it's a common word of insult still today.
vtbball80 vtbball80
But it was a bigoted slur, and for that matter.....
a mean-spirited and vulgar bigoted slur. There are some things you don't joke around about.
AbsolutVT03 AbsolutVT03
I'm ok with being on the record for the "opinion" that using slurs on the
tv/radio is a fireable offense. I also just wanted to point out that this isn't really a "free speech" thing.

why do we expect more than this from sports coaches? because they are paid
well? i mean he's a basketball coach- who cares what he says
G

Because anyone with half a brain could keep from saying slurs on the radio
bigbadbird bigbadbird
well he makes millions and he did it
AbsolutVT03 AbsolutVT03
Is this really "expecting more"? Personally I think "don't use slurs
during a live interview" is a fairly low bar to clear regardless of occupation.

I don't make the rules...just enjoy watching the entertainment they create
I've always viewed Huggy as one of the slimiest parts of what is an incredibly slimy profession. The irony of someone like him having his career ended because of a stupid comment like that is just perfect for the insane world we live in now.
