First time watching a Hokie post-season game?
I kid of course... but VT hasn't historically excelled in the postseason. Softball and baseball are slim-margin sports, meaning a few walks, a few timely hits, a few unfortunate line-outs, or double plays can be the difference between a close game and a game that gets out of hand.
Pitching usually wins games. While our pitching is very good, it's not quite as elite as previous years with Rochard and Lemley. Our batting, which is as solid as ever, is still always at risk of facing a pitcher who hits their spots and keeps the batters guessing.
Lastly - I think any surprise of a run rule is a reflection of how well we did during the regular season. This was bound to happen at some point - and we ran into a hot LSU team.
We're good enough to win this series. Let's see what happens.

Isn't that sort of a captain obvious comment by the coach?
What coach doesn't want the ball hit hard? Is a coach really going to say, I really want our team to hit it softly. I suppose an argument could be made that some coaches are more interested in contact and putting the ball in play, but clearly this lineup doesn't have a Kelsey Brown type slasher.

Duke had a very favorable conference schedule...
I was surprised that nobody mentioned this, but Duke played all their tougher ACC games were at home. This is Massey Rating's, and you can see they played their toughest conference games in Durham, and their easier games away. I felt pretty good going into yesterday's game as I feel VT's schedule was as hard as Duke's despite the RPI - and we beat some really good teams away from Blacksburg.

All is not lost. In fact, an argument could be made the team excels as a road warrior and plays better. Our record in Blacksburg is a paltry 9-4, but away from home we're a much more impressive 32-5.

Not so sure about that. They were borderline...
The pitch to the 2nd batter was a bit high as she's short, and the ball 4 to load the bases was so slightly low. Both could have been called strikes, but they were probably balls. We'll see how consistent he is though.

Meh - I wish him the best of luck...
I'm glad he chose VT and gave it a shot. Clearly, he wasn't a good fit this year or he wasn't as talented/mature as desired. Either he's going to find his path at UNC (good for him), or he's going to continue to struggle.
He clearly has potential... but he really needs to be able to beat his defender off the dribble, play better defense, shoot at at a higher percentage, and avoid bad turnovers. That's a lot to work on.
Of course, I still hope UNC loses all their games - but I won't root against him for choosing VT and giving it a shot.

Little league. Neither 3B Coach nor 3B runner looking at the ball...
How does that happen? I played baseball for 20+ years and I'm not ever sure we ever had that happen. There is no reason to turn your back. What if the catcher throws the ball over the head of the pitcher? What happens if the catcher throws to the third baseman (just happened). So many things. You just never take your eye off the ball until the umps rule the ball dead (and even then, you have to be careful for ball in the glove trick).

Fine to swing there. She walked 3 after a lot of fouls and close pitches...
If the pitcher was very wild, sure... but with the bases loaded and one of your great hitters... no sense in starting the count down 0-1, as that pitch was a strike.

Mishandled is a bit rough. It woulda required an exceptional play...
Possibly first baseman should have taken it, but it would have been bang/bang either way.

Here are some impressive Nickeil Alexander-Walker stats...
1) In his first 387 games in the NBA, he broke 20 points a total of just 25 times. In his last 68 games he's broken 20 points 43 times.
2) If he hits 13 more three-pointers in the remaining 6 games, he'll break the single season record for 3 pointers in Atlanta Hawks history.

For most the priority would be NCAA Tourney -> NIT -> Not Play
One of VT's best memories was the 1995 NIT Championship... it's a chance for the team to play in a tournament and win... at least in something.

This wasn't about Curd IMHO...
We hit her decently with several to the track. The issue is we gave them too many free bases. If we walk 10 again tomorrow, we should not expect to win.

Shoulda had one more run in that last inning...
If the batter can get from 1st to 2nd on a ground ball error to the right side, the runner from 2nd has to score with zero outs. Also, coaches were clearly arguing obstruction by the 2nd baseman as she fake caught the ball and pretended to start a tag, causing the runner to slide. According to chatGPT, that is not legal in college softball... so assuming thigns played out the same way it cost us a run.

Nice to see him succeed. Watching him was a rollercoaster...
He was clearly very talented, but at times very reckless. I'm surprised he landed on an NBA roster, but good for him. I felt he represented VT at his time here well.

Defender can't be the first one to touch it...
I think the ref either thought the pass was tipped (not even close), or the ref just got confused by the speed of the deflection off Bedford.

We have won 2/5. We must win the next two in order to be considered, but would likely need to win two PLUS a tourney game.
Win 4 of next 5, likely in.

Announcers are very likable...
Tuning into an SEC game is usually filled with bias, but these guys are very complimentary to the Hokies, call things pretty evenly, and seem to genuinely enjoy watching the talent on both teams.

No... but it makes the climb harder. Here's the breakdown...
Excluding the ACC Tournament, when we played Duke we were 16-6 and had 9 games left.
A 3-6 record and we're likely out. 5-4 and we're like in. 4-5 and it's a coin flip.
The problem is we are now 0-2 in those 9 games, so we have to go 4-3 the rest of the way to get to the coin flip.
The challenge is we must win at least one of our road games at Clemson, at Miami, at North Carolina, at Virginia... all while holding serve at home (Florida State, Wake Forest, Boston College).
Is winning 4 of those doable... ASOLUTELY! Is it likely, NO. Winning at Clemson is very important, and assuming we split the rest... that's would give us a 50/50 chance.

Pitching is solid, but likely won't be elite...
We got very spoiled having Rochard, who was incredibly consistent, and Lemley, who was dominating when she brought her best.
We should rack up a lot of wins with our potent offense and good pitching, but unlike years past, I don't see us shutting out or limiting runs against top 25 competition. That may to lead to some tough losses, and likely a bunch of comments like "what's wrong with our pitching". Well, there's nothing wrong, we just may not have an "NFCA First-Team All-American" or "NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region First Team" players.
We will see though.

Yup - Corey Moore would have been a top 5 pick in the NFL.
Dude was a BEAST in college, but his physical attributes wouldn't match up well at the next level. They draft on potential.
