Do you reward Montgomery by removing the temporary status from his title if
He takes us to a bowl game?

You evaluate him like every other coach. Compare him to the other top
candidates( which we have no idea who they will be) and if he is equal to or better then the other candidates you hire him. If he is not the most qualified candidate you should not hire him. The only reason I say equal too is he probably could keep some of the roster together but that is very short term.

Yes. You remove his temporary status and pay his buyout. Then you name the
new head coach, so an interim isn't needed anymore...

I think ALL of these questions.......
and discussions amount to nothing more than putting the cart way before the horse. This is a discussion board and as such, IMO, it is fair game. However, the guy has coached a total of 2 games(or 1.5 depending how one looks at Wofford) and there is still a lot of information pending relevant to any future course of action. I would suggest take a deep breath, enjoy the remaining ride and wait until getting closer to the finish line before dwelling too much on anything that represents little more than a hypothetical at present.

I think he gets serious consideration if he takes us to a bowl
At least I hope he gets consideration. What I hate reading here is people saying no matter what he does, he's automatically disqualified because they want a bigger name. A "splash" hire. Bill Belichick was a splash hire.

43-53 at Tulsa, some good seasons some average
I do think an average Head Coach could do ok at VT, but do we want Average? Considering the money the board appears to be investing I suspect a coach with an over .500 mark is wanted.

So, he didn't learn from past experiences?
My point is that he should be working towards consideration during this season. I don't want to just hand him the job, but want him to compete with the other guys who are interested in coaching here. A nightmare would be to hire a "flash" candidate like Bill Belichick, and Monty leaves to go coach NCSU and they dominate us indefinitely...lol

I'm sure he has learned something from his past experiences but
some of those in conference records from Tulsa are just bad. Kind of makes me wonder what teams make up the 43Wins. I doubt VT will hire a "flash" candidate, I would like to see a coach with a winning record vs Big4 conference competition. Montgomery had a winning record in conference 3 of 8 years coaching and some of those 5 losing years were bad(1-7, 2-6, 2-6, 3-5, 3-5).

Absolutely not. He earns a courtesy interview.
Maybe a nice bonus on the way out the door. ** Edited by Hokie4Heisman at 9/30/2025, 1:52:59 AM

It would be a formality, either he will be HC next year or not
And we will have to pay him accordingly. I don't know exactly what his contract says, there might be escalators for being HC, whether "temporary" or not Seriously doubt VT could just "remove his temporary status" and somehow get him next year on the cheap. Either we want him to stay and pony up the dough or we do not. Which if VT finishes strong, he probably goes elsewhere

Interesting question. I think a lot depends on the question of role of the
GM. Not in the hiring of the coach but the overall role.

I just can't see taking the chance. I like the guy but we cannot have
another hire that doesn't work out. If he goes on and wins out then maybe. If he goes to a bowl he deserves an interview.

Ans is YES, but more importantly, I want to see
the players and assitant coaches to continue to rally around Monty and give 100% effort when they feel valued, protected, and inspired by a shared, meaningful purpose. If Monty can create this environment of trust, consistency, and respect, then I can guarantee you that we will be top 10 again! First things first, VT must escort the balleins, whit, and anyone who's part of the good old boy system out the door asap

Winning and getting us to a bowl w another coaches Players and Assistants is not a reason to hire.

Not if the plan is to have a coach that can create a team that
is competitive at the top of the ACC. Folks don't just want a 6 or 7 win team. The goal is to play in the ACC championship game and then move on to the national playoffs. That won't happen with Montgomery.

Yes as the ceiling looks to be 5 right now and 4 being most likely
And 3 a distinct possibility. If he can keep them respectable while winning 3 games I think he gets a hard look as OC going forward. Just talking about effort and discipline as the balance of the schedule is certainly more talented nearly every week so losses are coming. Get maximum effort. He squeezes 6 wins out of this shammy and I don’t know how you don’t give it to him as it’s certainly a tail event.

wouldn’t just retaining him as an associate head coach make more sense?
that said, A bowl game would be a major feet (others said pry did that but this would mean winning 6 of 9 against a really difficult slate. he’d have to beat cal, uva, wake and 1 of GT, Loisville, UM , FSU. If he does that he could be a Hc somewhere for sure next year. If he gets to 7 wins, id start to think about him seriously for vt.

"Making a bowl game" should not be the standard at VT.
Hell, Pry did that twice. Do people think he should still be the coach? It's really amazing that after beating a bad FCS team and squeaking by a mediocre NCSU team, some people seem to be seriously thinking that Montgomery would be a good long term coaching solution. Look, I was as happy as anyone else to see the effort and execution that he got out of the team on Saturday. In comparison to Pry, it was light years better. But "being better than Pry" is NOT the bar that should be set. Nothing in Montgomery's resume would make him a serious candidate, if he just didn't happen to be the OC here at the time Pry got canned. Everyone speculating and/or suggesting that he should be promoted to permanent HC if he somehow gets VT into a minor bowl game should take a very deep breath. This is our chance to finally get it right, after two failed hires in a row, both of whom were hired for the wrong reasons.

By the same token, People need to realize a big hire isn't a guarantee
A big splash hire can also miss and tbh if by chance it does would probably be worse .... There is going to be a high level of pressure on this committee that's for sure. I wouldn't believe Montgomery is currently on the list but I guess he can earn consideration with 7 + wins .... 7-2 record would be an accomplishment ** Edited by MaryWashGrad at 9/29/2025, 5:40:14 PM

Maybe. But still way too many on field coaching errors.
The Head Coach has to perform the basics well at this level, regardless of resources. And show great leadership skills. Fu did neither.

Making a bowl game this year and under these circumstances would be a big a
Major Achievement. Has nothing to do with setting the bar for VT. The bar bar for VT is not going to be achieved nor set this year in all likelihood.

Bigger question is At what point is he considered for HC next year?
Folks will hate this, but IF he gets 5+ wins, his name should be in the hat IMO...Folks will hate the idea, but look at Brent Key...same circumstance....
