Honestly, I'd be OK with a 6th or 7th place ACC finish in Franklin's Year 1
That would put us in the top half of the league standings with a patched-together roster and represent a huge improvement over last year. 2027 is the year we should be really tough, with all the young portal guys + recruits we're bringing in.

Louisville seems a bit overrated to me at #3
They lost a ton of guys, though they do bring back All-ACC RB Isaac Brown. They're bringing in a transfer QB Lincoln Keinholz who is supposed to be talented but played sparingly at Ohio State, plus a bunch of O-line transfers. On defense, their front 7 looks pretty tough but overall I don't see them as the 3rd-best team in the ACC right now. Too many question marks and they have a tough opener vs Ole Miss in Nashville, though their ACC schedule is fairly easy: they don't face Miami, Clemson, UVA, or VT, and their two hardest league games (vs Pitt and vs SMU) are both at home.

UVA has a talented combo of returners and transfers
According to Athlon, their projected O-line combined for 164 career starts, making them the most experienced in the nation. Add to that two solid QBs from the portal (Pribula and Holstein) and two solid transfer portal RBs (Peyton Lewis from Tennessee and Jekail Middlebrook from MTSU) and they're gonna be tough. The biggest question mark for the Hoos is at receiver, where they lost basically everyone with any experience: they lost 6 of their top 7 receptions leaders from last year.
On defense, they're a mixed bag and return 5 starters but have two really good LBs in Kam Robinson and Maddox Marcellus. Their D-line doesn't scare me and same with the DBs, but Tony Elliott and crew will probably get them coached up. They also bring back both starting kicker Will Bettridge and starting punter Daniel Sparks, both seniors. They're gonna be good and should win a bunch of games with that schedule, but I'm still unconvinced they can actually beat us in Lane Stadium.

Ugh, if true. There's our patented season-ending injury of the preseason
Hopefully he's not so badly injured and can come back sometime this season, but normally where there's smoke there's fire with these types of things. Doesn't sound great to me. Next man up.

You’ll feel better after we destroy VMI and ODU, then go put Mike Locksley
on the hot seat with a big road whipping of the Terps. Hokies 3-0 heading into the ACC portion of the schedule. Book it!

ACC kickoff: Marcellous said QueSean Brown and Luke Reynolds are tough
to stop and singled them out as new players making an impact on offense.
Kemari Copeland singled out Aycen Stevens as a guy to watch on defense this season, noting Aycen is the current holder of the lunch pail. Getting fired up for this season!

Ditto. The guy was a major jerk and Duke homer who hated Virginia Tech
And wasn't afraid to broadcast his immense disdain for the Hokies. He was an epic tool and hopefully he got to see some of those epic VT beatdowns of the Blue Devils.

I've got us at 9-3, hopefully/optimistically.
Sure wins: VMI (vastly overmatched), ODU (we ain't losing to them again at home), Stanford (bad team and we'll give them a rude welcome to Lane Stadium)
Quite Likely wins: Pitt (Friday night game in Lane), @ BC (just a plain bad team), GT (meh opponent and lost their all-star QB, also likely homecoming), UVA (we never lose to them in Blacksburg)
Probable wins: @ Maryland (could go either way, but they're not world beaters), @ Cal (long trip, but they're not great)
Quite Likely Losses: @ Miami (tough, talented opponent on the road), @SMU (tough road game in Dallas)
Probable Loss: @ Clemson (not what they used to be, but probably still good enough to knock us off in Death Valley)

Very solid film and tons of offers. Surprised he's only a 3-star.
And 247 has VT back up to #7 nationally in its recruiting rankings (link below). We're raking them in.

This. POTD. 🤣
No idea what the fools in Happy Valley were thinking but whatever. Their loss is our gain.

He’s always been known as an elite recruiter. Hoping that will equal wins
His downfall (if we can even call it that) is that his teams at Penn State couldn’t win at the highest level. That may be a bit unfair as they made it all the way to the national semifinals in 2025. I would love to see Franklin get us to that level.

We’re definitely experiencing a Franklin bounce
True, we have more funding now, but there’s also just simply a lot of buzz around the Virginia Tech football program right now Big credit to Franklin and staff for bringing us back into the spotlight in recruiting. Hokies football is absolutely trending upward and the perception of the program has changed drastically since last year.

247 Sports now has VT ranked #2 in ACC football recruiting
Behind only Miami. We are absolutely killing it right now on the recruiting trail!

I can't imagine many Brazilians were dying to see a UVA-NC State game
Seems WAY down the list of things they'd be interested in down there.

Just watched his film. This dude is fast. VERY fast.
Being a 4-star composite recruit from Texas is a big deal. This guy can play. Very good pickup for the Hokies.

Huge commit! He's instantly the highest-rated commit in our 2027 class.
It'll be interesting to see where he eventually fits in, with a relatively crowded QB room. Grunkemeyer and Bryce Baker still have a few years of eligibility in front of them, and Kelden Ryan and Troy Huhn are just freshmen this year. We're definitely stacking talent at that position for the future!

Good get. That puts VT up to #14 nationally in recruiting, per 247 (link)
The Hokies are putting together a very solid 2027 class.

Still good to see Mansoor Delane go #6 in the first round to KC
Sure, it said "LSU" by his profile name, but he played the majority of his college football at VT and I'm happy to see him get taken that high in the draft.

I’m assuming it will go in this order: new prez, new AD, new GM for MBB
then new coach? Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker just broke the Hawks record for threes in a season
NAW passed Bogdan Bogdanovic for the Atlanta record for most three pointers (241) in a single season. What a year he’s having!

Congrats to Michigan. Their first men’s basketball championship since 1989.
First team to ever win a championship with 5 transfer players. Emblematic of the current era.

Awesome for Mary Washington! What a buzzer beater
Was that their first national championship in any sport?

Just a boneheaded error by Tulsa at the end of regulation
They had a timeout, failed to use it, got called for a 5 second violation on the inbounds, gave up an immediate three to tie it. Good grief.

Roster management: if we can keep Hammond, Hansberry, and Johnson I’m happy
as a starting point. Those three are good, tough players. Schutt, Dorn, and Sincere Jones, probably good if we can keep them but no disaster if they leave. Freeman and Davis, no idea. At least they’ve gotten practice reps for a year in Young’s system, so there’s that.
We’ll need to be active in the portal… again.
Men's Basketball Board
4 mo ago
I’m not.
Dorn is basically just a 7 foot goon with very little mobility and not much basketball ability. We can easily find another dude with that skill set.

But do we really want to pay a guy who’s mainly in it for the money?
It’s a lot of cash to throw at a coach whose days, frankly, are numbered and whose motivation is questionable. Nothing against Coach Young on a personal level, but from a business perspective I would not be disappointed to see VT part ways with him and start a new path.
Unfortunately that path requires money and leadership, neither of which Hokies MBB has in abundance right now.

Mike Young would be one of the greatest high school basketball coaches ever
If he had a squad of the same players locked in for 4 straight years in his system, they’d be darn near unstoppable. Unfortunately, he’s not coaching high school. He’s coaching D1 college basketball in 2026, where half the team flees town every offseason and you have to start over almost from scratch trying to teach this relatively complex system to a hodgepodge new group of players you hope will have chemistry. Sorry, nice guy and a proven system, but it just doesn’t work anymore in today’s college basketball.

It was that loss to Herzegovina that really sealed their fate.
Bosnia was bad enough but geez Italy. For shame!

Ja’Ricous is building a strong case to be included on that list.
He’s been pretty impressive for a walk on TE.

NC State hiring Justin Gainey as head coach (link)
He’s an assistant to Rick Barnes at Tennessee and played for the Wolfpack. Didn’t see that one coming and never heard of him.

All Duke needed to do was literally hold the ball on that last possession
They didn’t even need to cross mid court. And didn’t need to pass it at all. What in the world were they thinking??
Worst case scenario, they get fouled with the lead and are in the double bonus and shooting two. Just a boneheaded way a lose a basketball game.
Men's Basketball Board

Hokies didn’t make the tournament but at least we got to see Duke blow it
in utterly spectacular fashion. Probably the best consolation prize we could get. What an epic choke. That was awesome.

At this point, we’re heavy favorites to win the national championship
Don’t see how either UConn or Michigan State will beat us in the Elite 8 after our big proxy win over Duke.

Agreed. The repeated “verify you are a human” is super annoying
Never seen these boards glitch this badly. Very distracting.

Both advance to the Elite 8. UCONN and Michigan State in a heavyweight
matchup. Is it just me, or has Alex Karaban been playing for UCONN for about 12 years? Dude already has 2 rings and is trying for a third.

Neo could thrive in the right environment
Just seemed like his role at VT was never a good fit and he didn’t look fully comfortable in Coach Young’s system for some reason. A change of scenery would do him good.
The one year experiment ended with mixed results, but personally I have no hard feelings. Sometimes things just don’t work out as planned. I wish him well.

Washington Wizards
Watch them draft him deep in the second round and sit him on the bench, averaging 0.5 ppg.
For his sake, I hope he portals to some other NCAA school where he’s a better fit for their system and can develop, rather than being a late pick and languishing somewhere down an NBA roster. I still think he has potential, but we could never really tap into it for whatever reason.

He’s had some big games for Atlanta this season, including dropping 41
on Orlando a couple weeks ago. Averaging 20+ points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds per game. He’s currently the second leading scorer for the Hawks, who currently sit in first place in the Southeast Division. Pretty good showing for NAW.

Like I said, different worlds.
UNC has elite resources and elite expectations for MBB. Tech, not so much.
