Roster management: if we can keep Hammond, Hansberry, and Johnson I’m happy
as a starting point. Those three are good, tough players. Schutt, Dorn, and Sincere Jones, probably good if we can keep them but no disaster if they leave. Freeman and Davis, no idea. At least they’ve gotten practice reps for a year in Young’s system, so there’s that. We’ll need to be active in the portal… again.

Is it safe to assume Gurdak was made a covert offer from another school?
And it was significantly more than what he's currently getting and that's why he's portalling?

No...he just (rightfully) had a number in mind
That VT couldnt even come close to As the market gets more data its easier to figure out what you can/should ask for each season. Its also easier for schools to figure out what number they can realistically get to in order to fill out the roster Those 2 numbers weren't close so they let him get his worth on the market. Nothing nefarious...just a very poor program

Isn't that what his agent is paid to do?

100%, but when demands are made about starting, playing time, # of 3's per
game, etc....you are tieing the coaches hands. The coach is suppose to coach to win. A lot of these kids only care about the money and how they can pad their stats and not vested at all in the school or team success. Many are delusional about their skills and ability to make the NBA, when in reality most will be very lucky to even have a career in Europe. What are coaches suppose to do in this era...I sure don't know and don't envy that task. Whether you can or can't afford a kid, sometimes you have to show them the door and wish them good luck elsewhere.

What does any of this have to do with Gurdak?
Whether people like it or not he has a market value. VT doesnt have the funds to meet the market value and still fill out their roster, so he is getting the market value elsewhere and it'll likely be more than he was asking for from VT No one in Gurdaks camp made any demands about playing time or touches or anything, so this just seems to be ranting about something just to rant

Wrong, it did come from Gurdak's camp, at least according to a staff member

I usually like reading your insight, but what makes you correct in this....
instance? Do you and Mike Young negotiate with the players/agents?? Anything this staff member has shared has been spot on, so I have no reason to think they would be lying or have any reason to. Unless you are involved in the negotiations, I'll just have to disagree with you on this one and move on.

Would you pay that $$ for him?
Do you think he should be a starter next year?

Whatever it was is going to be cheaper than an equivalent replacement
He would've been a starter yes...Likely will be wherever he goes with a number of exceptions

A big that has the potential to start as a Soph should have 100% been a
priority and I suspect it was. The fact that we couldn't make it work with CG is a pretty clear indication that we are not adequately funding VTMBB to compete in the ACC or be an NCAA tournament-caliber team.

Nothing like recruiting him for years, then coaching him up to be a...

Schutt, if he can again improve his shooting another 2pp, great piece.
Plus he's been in the system for 3 years. ** Edited by GoldCoast at 4/2/2026, 5:40:19 PM

I expect those 3 will get a good share of the pittance CMY has available
to stay. As for the others you mentioned? Who knows? I would like to see what Jones can do.
