Bottom line, ND is one of the top 12 college football programs
Everything else seems irrelevant. Unless they were somehow judged to be ineligible for postseason like PSU was for a few years
If you feel they should join a conference, then exclude them from the CFP entirely until they join. That would force their hand

I think almost everyone realizes by now ... Brady made Belicheck
Had some success in Cleveland before the rug got pulled, but bottom line he hasn't won jack without #12 calling the shots

The non-call on A&Ms game winning TD vs ND has to be in the top 5.
The center tackled the nose tackle.
And it looked like the left guard was holding, as well

Franklin is obligated to negotiate the best possible salary
If he accepts $1 + incentives, thats a pretty open and shut case Penn St. owes him jack

He was probably playcalling the way Frank wanted him to
Frank didn't like flashy offenses. His emphasis was more on defense and special teams and offense that ran well and didn't turn the ball over

Not a big believer in "watershed" moments
Overall body of work is more important
Barring some miralce run I doubt he would be a serious candidate for HC gig at VT ... although if he finishes strong no doubt he gets interest anywhere

And yet Texas Tech beats them next year with Rodgers still at QB

No, but asking an extra $100 from students so athletics can be competitive
Is not too much of an ask

VT has been a "football school" for decades, so ... yes
Should have known this when applying. We're not UIUC or Cal - Berkley

It would be a formality, either he will be HC next year or not
And we will have to pay him accordingly.
I don't know exactly what his contract says, there might be escalators for being HC, whether "temporary" or not
Seriously doubt VT could just "remove his temporary status" and somehow get him next year on the cheap.
Either we want him to stay and pony up the dough or we do not. Which if VT finishes strong, he probably goes elsewhere

The only other option are raising ticket prices, or participant fees
Athletics has, like or it not, been integral to American universities for a very long time. This culture goes back to the Ivies
In order to maintain this culture, students who have no interest in athletics, subsidize those who do. Including the athletes of sports which don't make money, like track and field, etc. Which might even include charging the athletes themselves. Of course a good chunk are on scholarship anyway.
No one is forced to attend VT, if you don't like the culture, you are free to attend another university
Its my understanding the European university culture has very little athletics outside of club teams, I don't think these are subsidized - i.e. they charge fees or get donations. Certainly nothing like what exists in the US - if you're good at soccer in Europe you go into one of the club affillates U17, U21, U23, etc. The advantage of the US system is you can do both academics and athletics. Yes most don't take advantage of this, but some do.

I don't fully trust any listing
There's no obligation to disclose how much is being spent. And there's no way any sane department would disclose unless forced
The Athletic department funding would be a rough guide, but doesn't include things like boosters, etc.

Does that include backdoor funds, e.g boosters ?
With the NIL money, that seems like your main source for getting top-tier players
Also this is total athletic deparment, it doesn't separate out between football and other sports

No way
Playing poorly is going to affect any chance they have at getting an NIL deal or getting drafted

Maybe the talent on this team is really just that poor relative to ODU
Its like JV vs. Varsity. JV could be going all out and still get their butts handed to them by Varsity. My HS coach ran that exact experiment when Varsity wasn't playing well and JV was
I realize ODU isn't exactly a bad team given they hung in with Indiana for a while and trounced NC State, OTOH we *should* be better than a Sun Belt team

Yeah, like when he broke three tackles behind the LOS and ran for ten yards
And a first down to seal the game

Probably would not recruit any better than Pry, which is VTs core problem

Alumni donations
Might not be as high, if the university didn't care about football at all.
See Notre Dame - tremendous pressure from the alumni base to at least try to field a competitive team. And they are vocal about it

Because it didn't matter to you, you cannot extrapolate that to all people
Because it didn't matter to you, you cannot extrapolate that to all people
People are human, and enjoy leisure activities.
Some people like the environment that having a competitive football team creates.
Some of those people, yes, are also interested in academics.
While its true, anyone who can get in Harvard or Stanford or MIT, is not going to choose to go to VT except in extreme circumstances (maybe full ride scholarship, probably even that wouldn't be enough) and how good the football team is would probably have nothing to do with it.
But VT can't compete with those schools - for one they are private and don't have to accept X% from in-state, and secondly VT's location is unfortunately big minus for alot of 18 year olds.
Notre Dame would be my example of football program elevating the undergrad reputation.

Can only transfer if you aren't getting playing time and don't expect to
The rule for me is there would be a depth chart coaches have to post for the following season.
Players low on the depth chart would be able to transfer.
But if you don't play in a certain % of snaps the next season, you are allowed a transfer and also an additional year of eligibility.
Other than that you can't transfer, except for maybe a coaching change.

Its been like this for a while
The SEC, Penn State and UNC have been poaching the best high school recruits out of Virginia for years
Sadly I don't think VT is ever going to sniff an NC again
But its like that for about 90% of programs

Do we? Other than football ...
Other than curb stomping UVA in football for the past 25 years or so, there sadly isn't a whole lot to brag about.
UVA has two NCs (baseball and basketball), both within the last decade
