I usually can't stand people who try to be contrarian on internet message boards and now it seems I've become one :)
Every argument I've heard is "it could lead to this" or "it could lead to that" and I'm certainly not suggesting every athlete should go out and bet on their team, but the only somewhat valid argument I've heard so far is that if the athlete all-of-a-sudden DIDN'T bet on his team one week, that would be a tip-off of sorts. Again, I agree it's a bad idea, I'm just not able to wrap my head around the "absolute cardinal sin cannot do it" logic.

Every argument I hear is "it could turn into this" or "what if it were that?" And I agree, if it were those things, it's a huge problem. But an athlete placing straight-up bets on his team to win the game? Meh.

How does betting FOR your team affect outcomes though?
The entire sanctity of sports is that you can safely assume that every athlete is doing everything they can to win the game. This does nothing to change that. If anything, it reinforces it.

They were straight-up bets on his team to win. If he's betting against them, or even betting them to win and not cover then yes I agree. Other than "it's a slippery slope" what am I missing here?

The better schools take top HS talent because they can, but portal talent (aka proven talent) is much more valuable in this era. Last year's national champ didn't have a single top 25 HS class on the team, but they did have a top 10 portal class.

Interesting thing I just realized - Lane Stadium is bigger than all but
5 of this past year's 12 playoff team's home stadiums. I hear it thrown around sometimes that VT's stadium is too small by big-boy standards, but Oregon, Texas Tech, Indiana, Ole Miss, Miami, etc. seem to be doing just fine.

The impotence of NCAA rules go way beyond transfers and NIL
The UNC academic scandal, to me, was the start. That was a clear violation of a rule as well. The NCAA issued a punishment and UNC simply said "no." Up to that point there was a sort of gentleman's agreement that schools would accept punishment from the NCAA. That world is over.

TT didn't spend $5M on a QB to have him not play. NCAA rules are a series of cute suggestions that schools can choose to follow or not. He's starting game 1.

You're conflating high school recruiting with portal recruiting
Mendoza was a 4-star QB in the portal and the 2nd rated QB in that class - he had plenty of options. Indiana had to pay well to get him. Sarratt was a 4-star transfer as well.
