betting on his own sport (which he did), but just the fact that you get in debt 50k betting on pro football or basketball, then YOU can be approached to handle that debt by the book by influencing one of YOUR FOOTBALL games to make them a huge amount of dough. Remember the BC Bsketball scandal from the 80s?
I Hate that every sports talk show now promotes gambling and that the leagues are sponsored by the gambling sites knowing full well how many addicts they are creating.

NCAA states that betting on your own team is grounds for permanent forfeiture of any remaining eligibility. He was paid $5 million to come to Texas Tech. That's a lot of money to lose. Doubt his gambling winnings covered that

This is a clear rule. It doesn't restrict his income or freedom to move. He basically wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

TT didn't spend $5M on a QB to have him not play. NCAA rules are a series of cute suggestions that schools can choose to follow or not. He's starting game 1.

to earn or maximize earnings. That's what they have lost. This is a clear violation of a rule. It's not remotely relatable to transfers, NIL, etc.

The UNC academic scandal, to me, was the start. That was a clear violation of a rule as well. The NCAA issued a punishment and UNC simply said "no." Up to that point there was a sort of gentleman's agreement that schools would accept punishment from the NCAA. That world is over.

They had enough gray area (and blue blood) to skate by.
The gambling thing is pretty cut and dry. There have been players banned within the past few years. A QB at Iowa State was doing something similar to what Sorsby did, and he didn't play again--at least not D1.
If Sorsby hadn't bet on his own team, he may get some eligibility back. I'm sure that's what TT is shooting for by sending him to rehab. But he won't start the season. I imagine he'll move on and try to go the supplemental draft route.
