A highly experienced P4 offensive oriented HC paired w/a highly experienced

P4 DC plus a new OC that’s oriented towards the HC’s offensive philosophy should be fine. See also the first 2 years of Fu although he wasn’t a highly experienced P4 coach. ** Edited by Hokiefied at 7/20/2026, 11:40:46 AM

Billy road Brady’s coattails. End of story. He’s an awful coach who has….

Failed repeatedly in his career when Tom Brady wasn’t his QB. He is significant factor in the Ravens even existing: he crashed and burned the Browns so badly that they moved to Baltimore. His failure at the college level was as predictable as the sun rise as it’s not the same game and requires a completely different skill set to succeed vs the pros and he didn’t really have that skill set to begin with. Spot on 100% accurate assessment of at least Billy boy.

Which was the point of my original post as it pertains to VT football

Just because everyone around you says you’ll win doesn’t mean you will. The CJF hype is leading to this type of environment. As for US soccer, while improved, they are still second tier on the world stage. They got b-smacked by a much better team who showed up with a plan to b-smack them. The passive play in the box leading to the first two goals and the bad news bears impersonation that gave up the third reminded me of some the worst moments I had coaching youth soccer. I can hear myself telling my players at half “Attack and control the ball! Don’t wait for it to come to you!” That’s basic stuff and the US team can’t execute it against good teams. Oh well.

US was favored last night with draw the second most likely.

Hope CJF is paying attention as the hype of his hire is building expectations.

“Barely favorite” is still being the favorite

Prior to the striker being reinstated, a draw had the highest probability.

In terms of peeking sure. In terms living up to expectations? Nope.

VT wasn’t favored and being hyped in their sweet 16 game but how many times has the football team been the bell of the ball only to get taken advantage of in the coat room and left with the check for dinner? Countless.

A lesson for VT football can be learned from the USMNT

Don’t believe you deserve to win because everyone says you should win.

Just do it. Booked my family of 5 early this year for a week in…

An apartment and flight during the tourist season for a bit over $5k via Expedia. Food is affordable. All very doable. You won’t regret it. ** Edited by Hokiefied at 6/23/2026, 5:10:05 AM

Took the train to Vienna for today. Not enough time for that city.

Lots of history to go thru there but also a lot of traffic. Made it to the Schoenberg Palace and that ate up most of the day so make sure you have a few days to stay there. Not sure I can judge fairly given my quick visit but in what I saw I like Budapest better.

In Budapest with family this week. Was walking down the Danube last night…

And what did I hear? A Hungarian version of Enter Sandman. It was pretty cool and I guess Metallica is will be playing here in a couple weeks. Beautiful city and highly recommend you visit.

Just national media doing what national media does: hype minus facts

They’ll qualify it in the last sentence of their summary with “I won’t be surprised if they finish.500 either”. Pretty sure a reasonably informed VT will shrug those off as premature.

Harbaugh love him or hate him just out classed Beamer that day

Top to bottom, be it his coaches or players, Stanford was just better and that includes Bud. It was a game that really exposed the program as starting to slip.

Having a QB that’s a threat to complete a forward pass will do worlds of…

Good for an OL. They are already a good run blocking unit so they aren’t incompetent. Not having a DL and LBs that doesn’t have to respect the pass game in front of them is going to matter a lot. It’s not the only thing that needs to be fixed but it’s a good place to start.

That’s politely put premature

D still needs some more dudes especially at LB and S. A lot of potential at edge but. nobody proven. Depth at DT is not there although starters are probably the best of that group. Assuming the transfer CBs are P4 ready, that’s probably the best all around group which would be a huge improvement. CBP and CJF need another recruiting and portal cycle to get the D playoff dark horse potential IMO.

100% on this and that was also part of the problem

There was no other option to turn to that even had the potential to develop into something better. I’m certain that’s what they hoped for with the kid from Okie St.

It cannot be understated that not having a QB that was a threat to throw…

Had a very negative effect on the OL performance. The guy struggled to complete a screen pass much less stretch the field so DCs could take more risks attacking the OL. Sure they may get burned once or twice in a game but will make up for it when I get a bunch of sacks and turnovers. Having an actual passing threat will add add at least a second to the time the QB has. I’m also encouraged that the OL was able to create running lanes despite having the D stacked against them. They can perform and just need a QB that can do his job too.

More important to the coaching staff than the players

But it’s not unimportant to them either. I’m a blue chip player and I get an equivalent NIL offer from 2 programs but 1 has top notch facilities and the other is lagging, assuming I like both coaching staffs I’d probably go with the better facilities.

Having a QB that’s a threat to throw downfield will do wonders for the OL

Hell, being able to complete a screen pass consistently will help. I think we underestimate the impact that had on OL performance given the D could safely discount that in their approach.

Not sure why this is controversial

Only reason this happened is because the playoffs elongated the season overlapping with the start of the new semester. Him not being in class shouldn’t be a surprise.

Agree the OL needs to improve YOY but the 2025 QB1 situation amplified…

The issue. He was not a passing threat and even less so if he had to come off his first option. Keep him in the pocket and the odds dramatically shifted in the Ds favor. Put someone back there that can complete a forward pass consistently and doesn’t repeatedly throw screens at the feet of receivers and that gets at least another 1.5 Mississippis. ** Edited by Hokiefied at 1/16/2026, 10:14:33 AM ** Edited by Hokiefied at 1/16/2026, 12:36:38 PM

Has played for Moore. Has played for Bowen. I’d say they know what they…

Are getting. He’s a backup at OSU but he’s on the field regularly in jumbo packages. He is well regarded but they have a lot of talent.

His own personal amusement gained by reading free message board posters…

Hand ringing and stressing over his decision. I thought it was funny so I only imagine he did too.

Crystal Ball for “The” OSU OT, Justin Terry

Seemed to be a guy that was well regarded by the Buckeyes but they have talented bodies to spare. Nice pick up at a position of need if it comes thru.

Chatter today about another PSU WR: Denmark

He said he was returning to PSU but visited VT over the weekend.

Saw this, this morning & figured there’s news coming today

I haven’t been worried. Would still like to see some help at S. Maybe one of the corners is going to move over but VT needs help there. I saw that one of guys that committed Michigan that’s from VA was working on getting out of his LOI so perhaps that’s the answer we’ll get next month. I’m guessing they feel OK about LB and will prioritize it for 2027.

Used to play after school pick up games with Byington and go fishing…

In the pond in his backyard while in high school. It’s wild hearing his name on TV as top notch college hoops coach. Happy to see an old Salem home boy do so well.

I think CJF is lining up an unveiling ceremony for the O

Seeing some smoke around another PSU WR plus Grunk plus Reynolds, plus who knows? He seems to want to maximize the media impact so holding back the biggest names makes sense to me.
