Rickey Bustle was pretty good...
Out of his 8 years as OC, he really only had 1 truly BAD year in 98 with a #88 total offense ranking, but even that lousy 98 offense had a top 40 rushing offense. 93 - Great 95 - Good 96 - Good 97 - Mediocre 98 - Bad 99 - Amazing 00 -Amazing 01 -Mediocre Overall though, offense has been a rare commodity in Blacksburg over the years ** Edited by Techsupport at 11/22/2022, 3:16:04 PM

The VT "fans" in my section wanted to get rid of him. People on
HokieCentral were also not supportive. They'd talk up offensive coordinators/QB coaches who didn't have the overall record he did. His offenses were relatively simple, but stretched the field horizontally and vertically. As a QB coach, he coached two first-round NFL draft picks. I'd also note that Massey has the 2001 team as the 10th best offense in the country. I'd love to get back to that type of mediocrity.

in 98 we played several games with our free safety at QB...can't help
not to mention, Al Clark was a below average passer on a good day, but a pretty solid runner, the late season games he played was on a bad ankle, so the thing he did well was not anywhere near his best. Defending an offense that can't throw is a lot easier, no matter how good the OC is.

That free safety was a QB in HS... a pretty good one too!
Vienna_Hokie Vienna_Hokie
College defenses are littered with great HS QBs..few by choice
Nick was a safety because he wasn't a good enough QB to play at the college level. Great kid, great safety, great Hokie, not a great or even average QB at the college level. He was the best option we had, but that wasn't a great option.

I think the best WRs got hurt in 98 too. No speed or deep threat.

Has this OC given a reason to like him as a play caller?

We liked Mike Vick's improvising. That's about the best I can remember.

Even Beamer joked about it.
"There's the play we called, and the play that Michael wound up running" or something like that. 🤣

Scott Loeffler was the Worst
On hindsight, maybe Bustle was the best, but the bar is low.

But he was best man in Tom Brady's wedding!?!?
Loeffler was an "ok" OC. Largely hated inside Merryman I've been told.

nah. Bowen is the worst and Corn is next

Bowen needs at least another year to qualify, before he can be considered
worst than Corn. It takes time to develop into being "the worst" ! :-)

I think people have a warped perception of Cornelson...
...based mostly on a really frustrating 2021 season. I'd honestly give him a C grade over his time here. It was truly a mixed bag. Cornelson's biggest issue was Fuente's biggest issue....managing the roster. Different starting QB every year, diminishing talent year over year. I actually don't think he's a bad x's and o's guy at all. 2016 - #39 - B 2017 - #53 - C+ 2018 - #39 - B 2019 - #86 - D 2020 - #31 - B+ 2021 - #96 - D-

He lost the Battle in Merryman with Bud.
Frank was spending more time at the GA lakehouse and "leaving the driving to [them]." Ended up in a rumble in the hallway and Frank helped Bustle get the LL job. That's the way it was portrayed on the board.

The day they lost to SU at home. If
Buds D could have got SU off the field in the second half Bustles offense wins the game. Encouraging Bustle to leave was the beginning of the downward spiral imo.

Never. The VT OC has and I guess always will be persona non grata
to the vast majority of all Hokie fans. And the reason for their dislike has been and will always be "terrible play calling" Not execution, design or sequencing - just "play calling." IIWII Maybe it's like that everywhere. I honestly don't know. Stiney's kids getting bullied in school after losses was the most embarrassing example I can think of but there are others I'm sure.
H
HokiePail
Bullied in school. Lol. I remember
The day Stiney's offense gave up 9 sacks to Ncst and he couldn't do anything with them. I told my buddy that Ncst was playing man on the outside and he should start going after them. That was the first qter. Stiney finally started that in the 4th they started scoring and ended up missing a field goal to win the game. He was 3 qters and 9 sacks late.

The question is when have we had a dynamic high scoring offense
That took a lot of game planning from the other team. Last one I remember was Vick's r-freshman year. With the possible exception of the Jerrod Evans year. Both of those years were primarily due to the exceptional talent at QB. Complaining about aspects of our team that need to improve greatly is part of what the board is for. No the board won't be sushing it any time soon.
C
crazylane
That 99 team had talent
And heart. And a nasty O line. While Evans was a lion, it's apples and oranges. A bad Syracuse and GT team completely shut them down.
V
VTCALS72
But is that dynamic offense the best way to win at VT?
Or is it still more like Beamer Ball? Most dynamic offenses are either playing where there is way more offensive talent than the defenses they play or they have a bunch of 4 star guys not yet on the first 22. Which comes back to the 1st. You want a dynamic offense, root for a team that collects greater offensive talent than the teams they play. Kind of like the B12.
B
Brewing_Hokie
Ask Saban… who transitioned to a modern dynamic offense….
N
NokieHokie
Actually, dynamic offenses are the way to overcome talent deficiencies...
C

Think Wake
I mean how many 4 stars have they ever signed. Their offense carves up bad to average teams and gives good ones all they can handle. WRs are constantly running wide open, often on slant routes. And there RBs always pick up xhuncks even when they run that ridiculously slow mesh point time and time again. If we tried that, our QB and RB would be simultaneously buried 3 yds behind the LOS. ** Edited by crazylane at 11/22/2022, 9:07:28 PM

I don't really feel that logic is applicable.
It's not like our woes on offense aren't known, so if a guy comes in and does worse than those that previously under performed in that role it should be ignored? I think it should be considered a red flag. I can actually understand why people want him removed. I am giving him a chance, but only because we have no other choice. However, my expectations for him are low. It sounds nice to say lets give these guys a chance, but this isn't the place for that. We do ourselves a disservice with that attitude IMO. I don't want Pry thinking VT fans are the greatest and behind him all the way right now. I want him to know that many are disappointed in him, I also want him to know that there isn't a lot of confidence in his offensive coaches and special teams coach. I kind of think he feels that...., and i know he cares enough to want to fix things. I just question if the task is too great for him.

Most fans liked his 1st year results in 2016
35 avg pts per game ... Average 77 plays a game (nice tempo) and 440 yards per game ... Evans had 3500 passing yards and team had over 2000 rushing yards ... what we didn't realize was it wasn't going to last long ... downhill after that ...

The run game's been sorta ok. maybe they need different players in the
system. I'm miffed often in games about the multiple false start penalties and poor 3rd down calls (or just overall calls in general). if they call it that way due to the players we have then ok. but ya, he's got another year at least IMO

We'll have to disagree here.
The 93 offense was very good. The Druck offenses were very good. The Vick offenses were spectacular. Bustle and the O did struggle in the two years between Druck and Vick, but I will always believe that if Al Clark could have stayed fully healthy for both of those seasons, it would have been a different story. Bustle wasn't perfect, but I think he was a solid VT OC, and light years better than anyone who has followed him in that position.

Think about those names you mentioned
Druck. Vick. Those are some pretty talented players. Both 1st round picks, right or not. Think about those lines with Jimmy Martin and those guys. Lee Suggs, KJ. See anyone on the roster now to compare to those guys? Rickey Bustle had a heck of a lot more to work with. It's all relative.
