Virginia Tech Men's Basketball: Yesterday, and Today (long read ahead)

(I know that some of you may complain about the length of this, so I give you fair warning. No doubt, even with this, some smart azz will respond with a turned up nosed "TLDR" - well... you do you, Boo.) Please note: NO bstreet Klingon dialect was used, in the making of this post! In the entire history of Hokie Men's Basketball, which began in 1908-09, Virginia Tech has made at least the NIT, 27 times. Those seasons are listed here, along with the Head Coach for those appearances, as well as the number of teams that made each tournament those seasons: Shannon (7 Seasons, 1 NCAA, 1 NIT) 1965-66 NIT First Round (NCAA 22 Teams, NIT 14 Teams) 1966-67 NCAA Elite 8 (NCAA 23 Teams, NIT 14 Teams) Devoe (5 Seasons, 1 NCAA, 1 NIT) 1972-73 NIT Champions (NCAA 25 Teams, NIT 16 Teams) 1975-76 NCAA First Round (NCAA 32 Teams, NIT 12 Teams) Moir (11 Seasons, 4 NCAAs, 4 NITs) 1976-77 NIT Second Round (NCAA 32 Teams, NIT 16 Teams) 1978-79 NCAA Second Round (NCAA 40 Teams, NIT 24 Teams) 1979-80 NCAA Second Round (NCAA 48 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1981-82 NIT Quarterfinal (NCAA 48 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1982-83 NIT Second Round (NCAA 52 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1983-84 NIT Semifinals [3rd Place] (NCAA 53 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1984-85 NCAA First Round (NCAA 64 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1985-86 NCAA First Round (NCAA 64 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Foster (6 Seasons, 1 NCAA, 1 NIT) 1994-95 NIT Champions (NCAA 64 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1995-96 NCAA Second Round (NCAA 64 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Greenberg (9 Seasons, 1 NCAA, 5 NITs) 2004-05 NIT Second Round (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 40 Teams) 2006-07 NCAA Second Round (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2007-08 NIT Quarterfinal (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2008-09 NIT Second Round (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2009-10 NIT Quarterfinal (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2010-11 NIT Second Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Williams (5 Seasons, 3 NCAAs, 1 NIT) 2015-16 NIT Second Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2016-17 NCAA First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2017-18 NCAA First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2018-19 NCAA Sweet 16 (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Young (4 Seasons, 2 NCAAs, 1 NIT) 2020-21 NCAA First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 16 Teams) 2021-22 NCAA First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2022-23 NIT First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Totals: 13 NCAAs, 14 NITs Average for these 7 Coaches: 7 Seasons, 2 NCAAs, 2 NITs The first NIT Tournament was held in the 1937-38 Season. The first NCAA Tournament was held in the 1938-39 Season. Things have really changed over the past nearly six decades, since VT's first Postseason appearance. In the Spring of 1966, 36 teams made both tournaments combined. Now, 100 teams make it. The 2004-05 Season had 105 teams playing, as the NIT, for the only time ever, had 40 teams. The Hokies have had 5 NCAA appearances in the last 7 seasons, and remember that, in 2019-20, there was no NCAA or NIT tournament. So, VT has been part of the Postseason, for the last 7 times when the NCAA and NIT were held. Virginia Tech has not had a losing season since 2014-15. The Hokies have had 8 straight winning Regular Seasons, the third logest streak in VT History, behind 1908-09 to 1922-23 (14 seasons; the team did not play in 1912-13) and 1974-75 to 1985-86 (12 seasons). (Regarding the above mentioned streak: In case you have forgotten, in Young's first season here (2019-20), VT ended up 16-15 after a 14-5 start, and then lost to UNC in the ACCT, to end up 16-16.) The above information, is courtesy of Wikipedia. 2023-24 Season Tuesday, February 27, 2024 After tonight's game at Syracuse, the Hokies now stand at 15-13, 7-10. There are three more games left in the Regular Season, and then the ACC Tournament. Let's hope to get at least two wins out of those remaining games, get in as good a place going into the ACCT as we can, and see what we can do from there. It was only two years ago, that the Hokies beat four teams in four nights, including UNC and then Duke (in the Championship Game), who would later meet each other in the Final Four, to win the ACC. Mike Young's squad ended Coach K's ACC career by denying him another title. You never know what can happen. That's why the game is not played on a computer, and especially not on message boards. Hunter Cattoor's playing career in Blacksburg, ends soon. What a ride it must be for him... originally going to play at Wofford, then coming to Virginia Tech to play Power 5 ball. Being part of an ACC Championship team, winning the ACCT MVP Award, making the most 3 Pointers in the history of Hokie Men's Basketball, and finding a certain daughter of Coach Brooks. I am really going to miss Hunter. I wish him well in any future endeavors. Perhaps he will return to Blacksburg one day, as Head Coach. Things to this point in 2024, are of course not quite what I, or any other Hokie fan, would want. Well, keep in mind that things are not exactly rosy for our most recent former coach, either. His team's record is very similar to ours right now (15-12, 6-8). It's a good thing that we have people like @GCHokie34 to help maintain some logic and reason. (Of course, if one believes the very prolific poster, @hokiepro, who earlier this month surpassed 100,000 posts (only 8 posters have now done that), if the games were fairly officiated, our record would be something like 25-3.) I mentioned Mr. Williams. Much to my continuing astonishment, he is still wistfully pined for by certain posters. It's like a former girlfriend that left you, and you sit on the couch and wait for the call, which will tell you that a change of heart has been had, and she realizes she never should have left you, and will be coming home soon. (Only in the movies, pal.) And, the way some of the aforementioned posters talk, you'd think they believe that, instead of him leaving with his carpetbag full of whatever he could grab on the way out of town, like the Baltimore Colts sneaking out in the middle of the night heading for Indianapolis, that Whit chased him away. It's sad, really. But, in a sense, I get it. People want heroes. Myths. Legends. Bigger than life types. Bombastic salesmen, who seem to actually believe their own BS. In 1988, the group 'Living Colour' came out with a song called, 'Cult of Personality'. It's one of my favorites. I took some liberty with the lyrics... enjoy! And during the few moments that we have left I wanna talk right down to you In a language that only I can easily understand Look in my eyes, what do you see? The cult of buzzonality I know your anger, I know your dreams I am everything you wanna be Oh, I'm the cult of buzzonality Like Mussolini and Kennedy I'm the cult of buzzonality The cult of buzzonality The cult of buzzonality Neon lights, Big Dance Prize When my mirror speaks, the reflection lies You will have to worship me Only I can set you free I sell myself that you need to be I'm the weepy face on your TV Oh, I'm the cult of buzzonality I exploited you, still you love me! I tell you one and one makes three Oh, I'm the cult of buzzonality Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi Oh, I'm the cult of buzzonality The cult of buzzonality The cult of buzzonality Texas lights, I'm the Prize When buzzy speaks, I tell you lies You will have to worship me Only I can set you free You gave me fortune, you gave me fame You gave me power in VT's name I'm every person you need to be Oh, I'm the cult Of buzzon-ality I am the cult of, I am the cult of I am the cult of, I am the cult of I am the cult of, I am the cult of I am the cult of, I am the cult of Buzzonality! Ask NOT, what your buzzy can do for you! The only thing we have to fear, is... my ego itself! Goodnight, Hokies.

Will, thank you once again for the Mute feature...

So we can more efficiently ignore certain people. @GCHokie34 - keep on telling the truth. You are a beacon of light, for those who will listen to reason. I tire of self-hating Hokies (^^^^^), who worship false gods. Y'all can just move to Texas, and do "favors" for ol' buzzy fuzzy wuzzy boy. Console him, after his weepy azz rants. Great win today. My favorite part was the 9-0 run after GT got it down to 7, then all of a sudden it was back to 16, and that was all she wrote. We even ended the game on a +3 run, after the lead was 21. GT, much like BC, hung around, but never quite caught up. "This post is from a user you have muted" πŸ™‚ Update - 02/10/2024 - Congratulations to our resident "Reverse Mojo Man," hokiepro, for surpassing 100,000 Posts, and joining an exclusive club, being the 8th Poster to achieve this milestone, behind bourbonstreet, PhotoHokieNC, hokie80 (banned since New Year's Eve, 2019), HokieDan95, Edgeman, Tuckahokie, and TomTurkey! ** Edited by No_Limit_Hokie at 2/11/2024, 1:15:25 AM

GC, please list your most comprehensive current dirty Men's BB Coach list

From top to bottom, as best you can, in your estimation. Should make for an interesting list.

Have they decided when they are going to announce the firing of Mike Young?

And bring back buzzy fuzzy wuzzy boy, along with Radford with his DUI and gun stuff? Sure was short sighted and mean of Young to kick Cattoor in the head last game, so he couldn't play tonight. Why oh why did Whit fire buzzy, and tell Radford to hit the road?? He should resign, but first, can MY, go straight to Mr. Billiams, and give him a "buzz" (if ya know what I mean). Then, offer him Tim Sands' position. Maybe then buzzy will forgive Whit, accept all of the money in the Hokie coffers, and grace us with his presence once again! (For the humor-impaired... all of the above is πŸ’©, and what *should* be obvious, eye rolling sarcasm.)

"Maybe you struggle against athletic keyboards" QOTD!!! Bwahahaha!!!!

Prideless and Joyless is a real Debbie Downer. ** Edited by No_Limit_Hokie at 1/11/2024, 4:01:52 PM

GCHokie, thank you always for your efforts... of calm logic, and reason...

Unfortunately, you seem to be tilting at windmills, in the sense of having many people listen to you. We need to create the... VT Men's Basketball Bingo Game! Here are some squares to start... you will of course recognize some of them from your earlier post... suggestions quite welcome from others... NIT Fire Mike Young Can't recruit Can't keep players Chester Frazier Lightning in a Bottle Wofford (We'll get) Killed for five years! (Go back and look at some of the posts in 2019, right after MY was hired) Muh Buzzy!! Not Power 5 SoCo 1hokies1

My gosh... just... go away. You use your account as a platform to bash MY

And that is the ONLY thing, you bring to the table. I don't understand how you are still here. I know that Will is a patient and long-suffering type, and I know he has shown mercy when some of us (myself included) have overstepped, for which, I am grateful. But amongst those people who have not been banned totally, they have something they try to offer, other than using the Board as a personal DARTboard, with one Coach's face on it. Even if I disagree with them, or them with me, perhaps strongly, I recognize that they are attempting discourse. You? All you do, is chant your mantra, ad nauseum. I should have made an Award for you this past year... in fact... here is an addition to my New Year's Eve post... The Award for Poster With The Most Annoying One Man "Band" Who Has Just One Song And Nobody Wants To Hear It goes to... 1hokies1. (Mic drop)

"Imagine, if you will... a College Football fan base SO delusional..."

"... their fans always predict that they will run the table, although they have never done so. In fact, they built a trophy case for their win to come. But it remains empty, at the bottom of a nearby body of water." "You have just entered... The Hokie Zone!"

Cue the Bleach Boys...

"Round round big and round She's big and round!" Note that I did not say, 'Beach Boys'...

Just like the Buffalo Bills. Lost 4 straight Super Bowls.

They obviously sucked. Didn't get the absolute top prize so they were horrible. 1999 VT Football sucked, by that same measure.

My overall summation, of this whole matter...

WestyHokie started this thread referring to someone's greatest teams of all time list. The link to that list, he titled, 'No love for 99 Hokies'. You stated, in response to that original post: "99 Hokies shouldn’t be in the conversation. Runner up doesn’t get you on the greatest team ranking." I pointed out that ESPN had at least three teams in the Top 40 of their Top 150, teams that were not named National Champion. Now, this does not mean that you support ESPN's list. I do not wish to misrepresent what you say. I pointed out that 2012 Mount Union, a Division 3 team, made the list. I did then question that, if that team made the list, do people really think they would be favored over 1999 Virginia Tech? You made an excuse for Mount Union. Okay, your opinion. Hard for me to think they would be favored against the 1999 Hokies, but to each their own. Using your criteria, should 1979 USC, 1971 Oklahoma, and 1983 Nebraska (as well as any other teams that did not win it all) not make that list? If you think so, fine. As long as you are consistent. But I ask you... much like the Playoff Committee this season, "best instead of most deserving," would you favor 1999 Virginia Tech over 2012 Mount Union, see it as a coin toss, or do you believe 2012 Mount Union would be favored? If you are fine with Mount Union, a Division 3 team making the list, I do not see how the 1999 Hokies would not be in the conversation, even if ultimately not chosen for such a list. You seem to intimate that only Tech fans would think that their school, not having won a National Championship, might somehow think that their team could rank somewhere in the greatest ___ number of teams ever. I guess 1979 USC, 1971 Oklahoma, and 1983 Nebraska, among others, none of their schools would make such a claim. Only Virginia Tech, right? Where would I rank 1999 Virginia Tech, if I were making a list? I do not know. But if ESPN (not to assume that they are right) chooses a Mount Union team on the list of Top 150, it is not totally out of reason to *consider* 1999 VT. ** Edited by No_Limit_Hokie at 12/15/2023, 5:28:32 PM

So these teams on the ESPN Top 150 list should not be there...

30. USC 1979 31. Oklahoma 1971 36. Nebraska 1983 I'm not going to make the effort to list all of them. ** Edited by No_Limit_Hokie at 12/15/2023, 12:26:17 PM
