Virginia Tech Men's Basketball: Yesterday, and Today (long read ahead)

(I know that some of you may complain about the length of this, so I give you fair warning. No doubt, even with this, some smart azz will respond with a turned up nosed "TLDR" - well... you do you, Boo.) Please note: NO bstreet Klingon dialect was used, in the making of this post! In the entire history of Hokie Men's Basketball, which began in 1908-09, Virginia Tech has made at least the NIT, 27 times. Those seasons are listed here, along with the Head Coach for those appearances, as well as the number of teams that made each tournament those seasons: Shannon (7 Seasons, 1 NCAA, 1 NIT) 1965-66 NIT First Round (NCAA 22 Teams, NIT 14 Teams) 1966-67 NCAA Elite 8 (NCAA 23 Teams, NIT 14 Teams) Devoe (5 Seasons, 1 NCAA, 1 NIT) 1972-73 NIT Champions (NCAA 25 Teams, NIT 16 Teams) 1975-76 NCAA First Round (NCAA 32 Teams, NIT 12 Teams) Moir (11 Seasons, 4 NCAAs, 4 NITs) 1976-77 NIT Second Round (NCAA 32 Teams, NIT 16 Teams) 1978-79 NCAA Second Round (NCAA 40 Teams, NIT 24 Teams) 1979-80 NCAA Second Round (NCAA 48 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1981-82 NIT Quarterfinal (NCAA 48 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1982-83 NIT Second Round (NCAA 52 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1983-84 NIT Semifinals [3rd Place] (NCAA 53 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1984-85 NCAA First Round (NCAA 64 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1985-86 NCAA First Round (NCAA 64 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Foster (6 Seasons, 1 NCAA, 1 NIT) 1994-95 NIT Champions (NCAA 64 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 1995-96 NCAA Second Round (NCAA 64 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Greenberg (9 Seasons, 1 NCAA, 5 NITs) 2004-05 NIT Second Round (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 40 Teams) 2006-07 NCAA Second Round (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2007-08 NIT Quarterfinal (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2008-09 NIT Second Round (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2009-10 NIT Quarterfinal (NCAA 65 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2010-11 NIT Second Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Williams (5 Seasons, 3 NCAAs, 1 NIT) 2015-16 NIT Second Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2016-17 NCAA First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2017-18 NCAA First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2018-19 NCAA Sweet 16 (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Young (4 Seasons, 2 NCAAs, 1 NIT) 2020-21 NCAA First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 16 Teams) 2021-22 NCAA First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) 2022-23 NIT First Round (NCAA 68 Teams, NIT 32 Teams) Totals: 13 NCAAs, 14 NITs Average for these 7 Coaches: 7 Seasons, 2 NCAAs, 2 NITs The first NIT Tournament was held in the 1937-38 Season. The first NCAA Tournament was held in the 1938-39 Season. Things have really changed over the past nearly six decades, since VT's first Postseason appearance. In the Spring of 1966, 36 teams made both tournaments combined. Now, 100 teams make it. The 2004-05 Season had 105 teams playing, as the NIT, for the only time ever, had 40 teams. The Hokies have had 5 NCAA appearances in the last 7 seasons, and remember that, in 2019-20, there was no NCAA or NIT tournament. So, VT has been part of the Postseason, for the last 7 times when the NCAA and NIT were held. Virginia Tech has not had a losing season since 2014-15. The Hokies have had 8 straight winning Regular Seasons, the third logest streak in VT History, behind 1908-09 to 1922-23 (14 seasons; the team did not play in 1912-13) and 1974-75 to 1985-86 (12 seasons). (Regarding the above mentioned streak: In case you have forgotten, in Young's first season here (2019-20), VT ended up 16-15 after a 14-5 start, and then lost to UNC in the ACCT, to end up 16-16.) The above information, is courtesy of Wikipedia. 2023-24 Season Tuesday, February 27, 2024 After tonight's game at Syracuse, the Hokies now stand at 15-13, 7-10. There are three more games left in the Regular Season, and then the ACC Tournament. Let's hope to get at least two wins out of those remaining games, get in as good a place going into the ACCT as we can, and see what we can do from there. It was only two years ago, that the Hokies beat four teams in four nights, including UNC and then Duke (in the Championship Game), who would later meet each other in the Final Four, to win the ACC. Mike Young's squad ended Coach K's ACC career by denying him another title. You never know what can happen. That's why the game is not played on a computer, and especially not on message boards. Hunter Cattoor's playing career in Blacksburg, ends soon. What a ride it must be for him... originally going to play at Wofford, then coming to Virginia Tech to play Power 5 ball. Being part of an ACC Championship team, winning the ACCT MVP Award, making the most 3 Pointers in the history of Hokie Men's Basketball, and finding a certain daughter of Coach Brooks. I am really going to miss Hunter. I wish him well in any future endeavors. Perhaps he will return to Blacksburg one day, as Head Coach. Things to this point in 2024, are of course not quite what I, or any other Hokie fan, would want. Well, keep in mind that things are not exactly rosy for our most recent former coach, either. His team's record is very similar to ours right now (15-12, 6-8). It's a good thing that we have people like @GCHokie34 to help maintain some logic and reason. (Of course, if one believes the very prolific poster, @hokiepro, who earlier this month surpassed 100,000 posts (only 8 posters have now done that), if the games were fairly officiated, our record would be something like 25-3.) I mentioned Mr. Williams. Much to my continuing astonishment, he is still wistfully pined for by certain posters. It's like a former girlfriend that left you, and you sit on the couch and wait for the call, which will tell you that a change of heart has been had, and she realizes she never should have left you, and will be coming home soon. (Only in the movies, pal.) And, the way some of the aforementioned posters talk, you'd think they believe that, instead of him leaving with his carpetbag full of whatever he could grab on the way out of town, like the Baltimore Colts sneaking out in the middle of the night heading for Indianapolis, that Whit chased him away. It's sad, really. But, in a sense, I get it. People want heroes. Myths. Legends. Bigger than life types. Bombastic salesmen, who seem to actually believe their own BS. In 1988, the group 'Living Colour' came out with a song called, 'Cult of Personality'. It's one of my favorites. I took some liberty with the lyrics... enjoy! And during the few moments that we have left I wanna talk right down to you In a language that only I can easily understand Look in my eyes, what do you see? The cult of buzzonality I know your anger, I know your dreams I am everything you wanna be Oh, I'm the cult of buzzonality Like Mussolini and Kennedy I'm the cult of buzzonality The cult of buzzonality The cult of buzzonality Neon lights, Big Dance Prize When my mirror speaks, the reflection lies You will have to worship me Only I can set you free I sell myself that you need to be I'm the weepy face on your TV Oh, I'm the cult of buzzonality I exploited you, still you love me! I tell you one and one makes three Oh, I'm the cult of buzzonality Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi Oh, I'm the cult of buzzonality The cult of buzzonality The cult of buzzonality Texas lights, I'm the Prize When buzzy speaks, I tell you lies You will have to worship me Only I can set you free You gave me fortune, you gave me fame You gave me power in VT's name I'm every person you need to be Oh, I'm the cult Of buzzon-ality I am the cult of, I am the cult of I am the cult of, I am the cult of I am the cult of, I am the cult of I am the cult of, I am the cult of Buzzonality! Ask NOT, what your buzzy can do for you! The only thing we have to fear, is... my ego itself! Goodnight, Hokies.
