About to watch the game, how did Pedulla do?
He still stink? Did they fire MY at halftime?

Well, if he shoots 60% from three the rest of the year we'll be in good
shape.

And no offense GC but this is about the same post as those who want to can
him after a bad game. Maybe Will gave give us a pre-defined post to click after Pedulla has a good game or a bad one? Easier on the typing fingers.

The good games have far outweighed the bad, and the bad...

I agree - just wish he would even them out a little more.

Rechsteiner needs to start. Pedulla can come off the bench, or maybe play
the 2 if Catoor needs a break.

Louisville romps Miami therefore Louisville is no longer a bad team
Did I get it right?
G
GCHokie34 OP
If Louisville tied their career high the previous game...
And people were saying Louisville should transfer Or if quietly Louisville had put up 26 points against South Carolina, 26 against FSU, 32 against Clemson, 18 against Boise State, 17 against Iowa State all while fans who swear they cheer for Louisville said they were a bad PG because of 2 bad games? But I think we are losing the metaphor here Bottom line, it is difficult to win on the road and making judgments based on not doing so every time is a very dumb way to judge whether a team is good or not Oh, and Sean Pedulla is a very good PG

Hopefully Pedulla continues the great play in the NIT later this year
Maybe they can get the past the first round this time if they're lucky.

Rechsteiner didn't hurt us when SP sat, either. Kept it under control,
got in front of his man, gave Sean some breather time and probably could've gone longer.

Yeah, wouldn't mind seeing Rechsteiner get 10 mins as long as his matchup
on defense was OK. Keeping Pedulla fresh should be a priority.

Whit offered to trade CMY for Brownell just after the half.
But Clemson’s AD was pretty tied up with Dabo on the phone. Whit withdrew the offer when Brownell gave up with 90 seconds to go.

He was bound to have a good game eventually. It came against a team that’s reeling. Good for him.

LOL. He was "bound" to have a good game? Yeah, just chuck up enough shots
and anyone can have a good game. Basically, Pedulla just stumbled into 32 pts. Got it.
P

Fair enough.
When he faces teams that aren’t athletic defensively, he has the opportunity to thrive — and he did against Clemson. Good for him and for VT.

Every team has a leading scorer. Even bad teams.
I’m glad he’s playing well. But he’s been a mess this season. Happy to see him not have a slew of horrible turnovers and glad his shot is falling.
G
GCHokie34 OP
Sean Pedulla "the mess"
South Carolina - 26 pts Iowa State - 17 pts Boise State - 18 pts FSU - 26 pts Clemson - 32 pts He's a disaster...like...for sure Judging him off 1 bad game and then a stretch where he played injured completely ignores the overwhelming majority of the season where he has been very good
P
Pride_and_Joy
He’s the best player on the team.
I mean, he’s a shooting guard in a point guard’s body — so he has games where he scores well. He’s 319th in the country in assist:turn over ratio at a whopping 1.36. I’m glad he’s playing better. I’m glad he’s scoring more. Like I said, he’s the best player on the team and the only one who can create his own shot — well when not playing against athletic defenses like Auburn or FAU. He’s the best we have. Doesn’t make him particularly good. 🤷🏻‍♂️
G
GCHokie34 OP
Ahhh got it...South Carolina, FSU and Iowa State aren't athletic...
Or maybe you're trying to manipulate something intangible to explain away a very bad take you have So lets extrapolate that logic... Isaiah Collier is currently projected as the first college player taken in next year's draft. 2 games ago he scored 7 points against Oregon State. He shot 16% from 3 against Alabama State... He had a very average 13 points against the same Auburn team you're crucifying Pedulla for...again we are talking about a Top 5 draft pick. His USC team is 8-8. So he is the best player on a very mediocre team. So we can surmise from that that he's simply someone who struggles against those type of athletes...nevermind his performance against other teams with athletes But no, go ahead and stick with this mouth-breathing logic
P
Pride_and_Joy
Pedulla is up and down.
Sometimes, he's a walking turnover machine. Sometimes, he fills it up. How many points did he score against Auburn, by the way? He was 0-9, 4 pts, 1 assist, and 7 turnovers. If you don't think he struggles against rangy, athletic defenders, then okay. I already shared with you that he's 319th in the country in Asst:TO ratio. He's not a very good point guard. He just isn't. He's an undersized shooting guard who is being asked to play PG. He's a fierce competitor with very questionable decision-making and shot selection -- and he turns the ball over A LOT. I don't think that's a particularly provocative take. I'm not sure why people are so sensitive about this. And don't give me that crap "he's a student-athlete and you shouldn't criticize him" -- he's paid. He's a professional athlete.
G
GCHokie34 OP
Your 319th statistic doesn't show what you think it does. .
There are 4,500 division 1 basketball players. He's not 319th among PGs. He's not 319th among ACC players. He's 319th among all players period That means he is in the top 7% of players across the country in assists to turnover ratio You're presenting that data as a bad thing...it's the opposite of a smart argument. But hey, sometimes you make good points and sometimes you struggle to understand data. Maybe you struggle against athletic keyboards...who knows. But maybe one day you'll make it to the top 320 of posters here and understand it puts you in the top 10%...which wouldn't mean you're a bad poster But until then...
P
Pride_and_Joy
So your argument is that a starting PG in the ACC should be proud to be
319th in asst:TO? I understand there are thousands of players in D1. But it isn't really an accomplishment to have a better ratio than the a wing from Holy Cross or a big from McNeese State, is it? He's tied for 137th in assists per game. Is that the level you expect from a starting PG in the ACC? He's 61st in turnovers per game. Again, do you think those are good numbers for a point guard? You seem to get upset about this stuff. So feel free to take a minute before responding. Maybe count to 10 or something. So he seems to be better at producing turnovers (relative to the rest of D1 basketball) than he is at producing assists. EDIT: Also, by my count, there are only six P5 players who average more turnovers per game than Pedulla. So among the major conferences, he's pretty bad in that regard. ** Edited by Pride_and_Joy at 1/11/2024, 4:01:35 PM
G
GCHokie34 OP
Do I think a PG should be disappointed to be in the top 7%?
Absolutely not You keep pulling statistics without knowing the context for any of them Pulling "per game" statistics does not adjust for tempo or usage. Two very important factors when looking at per game stats. He's tied for 137th (again across ALL players at every position of every usage in every tempo) in assists. He plays on a team that plays the 268th fastest out of 362 teams. So he is top 4% overall in assists per game on a team that is in the bottom 25% in tempo You're welcome to stop anytime
P
Pride_and_Joy
If we play at such a slow tempo, why is he 61st in turnovers per game?
Shouldn't he be MUCH lower because he doesn't have that many opportunities to turn the ball over relative to other players who have more possessions per game? I understand the possessions per game argument and that's fair with regard to assists -- I just don't see how you square that circle with regard to turnovers. ** Edited by Pride_and_Joy at 1/11/2024, 6:20:49 PM
G
GCHokie34 OP
Yep, he's turning the ball over too much...
And that's the point. That's his whole issue right now. He isn't a bad PG. He assists where there are opportunities. He scores where there are opportunities. He needs to clean up the turnovers. The turnovers do not overshadow the rest of what he does. But if he corrects the turnover issues then he goes from a good PG to a great PG. What you're doing is painting the turnover issue as something keeping a bad PG from becoming below average. It's simply not true
P
Pride_and_Joy
I think you’re being a bit Pollyanna.
In 6 of 13 games this year, he’s had only 1 or 2 assists. That doesn’t scream good (bordering on great) PG.
G
GCHokie34 OP
We are rehashing the same argument now...
We have already covered he is in the top 4% in assists per game playing for a team in the bottom 25% in pace You know this...
P
Pride_and_Joy
He’s not in the top 4% of PGs.
Also, do you consider 1-2 assists good for a PG? I’d argue that means in half the games, he wasn’t very effective as a facilitator. You think he’s good bordering on great. I think he’s mediocre. But you’re a master of interpreting data. So I’m sure being top 60isj in turnovers and barely registering assists in half ones games is bordering on great PG play.
G
GCHokie34 OP
Except he isn't averaging 1 or 2 assists...
He's averaging 4.1 assists. Justin Robinson averaged 4.5 apg in a much faster pace Trying to remove the games in which Pedulla has done well to make him look bad makes you look as clueless as those who say Mike Young "got hot for 4 games" in the ACCT season. Nevermind they were 13-3 in their last 16 games. Nevermind Pedulla has performed at a high level against Top 100 programs. If you take away all his wins, Coach K never won a single game
P
Pride_and_Joy
Means without variances provide limited information.
He has had some very good games in which he either scores or facilitates for others. Sure. However, he's also had only 1-2 assists in nearly half the games he's played. I'd argue that 4 assists each game is different than averaging four assists per game and having the assist situation be feast or famine. He's inconsistent. Sometimes he scores well. Sometimes he facilitates well. Often he turns the ball over a lot (4+ turnovers in 5 of 13 games). You think his numbers mean he's good (bordering on great) and I think he's wildly inconsistent, prone to turn the ball over too much, and not a consistent facilitator. He's a SG in a PG's body. He'll have moments that are great but overall isn't a particularly good PG. I'll leave it at that. We are rehashing at this point. You like to take jabs that I don't understand data and you have this far more nuanced and sophisticated understanding. Feel free to continue to think so. I'll simply be rooting for Pedulla to cut down on the turnovers and be more consistent with his decision-making. I love his competitiveness, his willingness to have the ball and take the shot in big moments, etc. I hope he can be more consistent. He's the best player on the team by a mile and we'll need him to continue to play like he did against Clemson to win many ACC games.
G
GCHokie34 OP
But in order to average 4 apg...
And have "half your games be 1 or 2 assists", then the other half would have to mean he is getting 6 or 7 assists. So literally the argument is "half the games he gets 6+ assists" Either both of our statements are true, or both are false... But the reality is that fixing the turnover issue means a PG capable of 6+ assists, 20+ points and score from all levels also takes care of the ball That's a great PG...he is currently a good one
P
Pride_and_Joy
Of course that’s how a mean works
The point is that the variances large. I’d rather have a consistently good player than one who plays great some games and is trash other games. Same mean, less variance is more desirable. This is boring now.

I just think we're very mediocre, can't create our own shots (other than Pedulla -- sometimes). Clemson played flat and is on a 3-game skid. But it's still a positive sign after choking away the FSU game.

King of Hokies King of Hokies
Lol. Yeah, all the crappy players are putting up 32 on Clemson these days.
Let's see, UNC had ... no one even clear 20 against them. But that's because UNC has really good players. The good players don't put up 32 on Clemson, only marginal ones. Ok, ok, Miami had Pack put up 25. Well, that was a precursor because Pack isn't very good either. So, Pedulla eclipsed everyone on UNC and Miami's roster vs Clemson. But that's because Clemson doesn't know how to play D. I mean, they are #78 in kp AdjD. Pretty much anyone who shoots it a bunch will easily crack 30 on them.

Sorry, but this is a really bad analogy. Through 15 games Pry was 4-11
against very bad competition. And the product on the field was not encouraging. We had a 1-6 record in the ACC, which is not a strong conference by any means. We couldn't beat B10 bottom feeders and struggled against mediocre Sun Belt teams. Sean Pedulla has *NEVER* played like that. Never.

G
GCHokie34 OP
Not a single person is wrong for wanting him to reduce the bone head plays
I do it myself. I'm certain Mike Young does. Where it becomes problematic is when there are those who say Pedulla is ONLY those turnovers. That somehow the bad has overshadowed the good, and some have gone as far as suggesting he shouldn't be a part of the program going forward. The reality is the good has always far outweighed the bad, he has many things to improve, and he has steadily improved for the entirety of his career. So if he continues to improve his ceiling is only much higher.

Terrible Game for SP
He missed seven shots, committed two turnovers, and his defense was so bad he wasn't close enough to his man to foul him (0 fouls in 34 minutes) or block any shots. MY was so upset with his play he sat him for about 5 minutes in the second half.
