..the B1G will ever give, "special treatment" to ND. For one, Michigan, Purdue and USC are historical rivals already. They can still play Navy and BC and another historical rival on a rotating basis. Indiana (30x since 1898), NW (Parseghian came from NW) and OSU are natural rivals and of course MSU (67x) which they had historic game in 1966. How much more exposure do they need? .I say dump them unless they agree to be "all in" w/the ACC. At the end of the day, CF is about rivalries and who are ND's? Not the ACC.

I knew him and Jeff Clare well enough in HS although aside from Mechanical/Architectural Dwg. classes and my connection to the football (Eddie) and soccer (Jeff) teams, Eddie and I went to Europe together in 1970 and lived in the same group house off of So. Main (Draper Rd.) for 5-qtrs. I knew Eddie well. Not so much Jeff who dropped out for a few years, then returned in my 5th year, I think. Eddie and Jeff were buddies/roommates for a while, then their relationship ruptured.

Reached my full height in college but was otherwise light, maybe 12#. However I've weighed as much as 205#, now 165# which is a healthy weight for me. My sport is soccer which along w/hockey, basketball was derived. Skills are (obviously) different but basic concepts are the same. Still, I can't analyze a basketball game. Did you know, Glenn (???). Mark Levin? Bob and Donna Dunay? Ron Daniel? Tony Ansaldo? Bill Schillig? He was 2 years ahead of me in HS.

The Road schedule (6 games) is tougher than the Home schedule (5) which includes Duke. Four of the latter should favor us. The challenge then is winning 2-more Road games from Louisville, which has never been easy for us, NCSU, Clemson, Miami, UNC and UVA. But we're a stronger team now w/Laval than we were w/o him.

...As for Buzz, I liked him but he's a strange bird. We knew he was a short-timer, wanted to go back to Texas, then what does he do, comes back to the Mid-Atlantic? I thought he was a good coach. I understand he recommended MY, who was well-known and thought of ibn coaching circles but not outside of them.

...John Weber, Jeff Clare, Eddie Clark and John Tymoff were HS (Yorktown, Arlington) classmates. Hugh Winstead graduated w/me. Luther Blair, a good friend, he's dealing w/Parkinson's now. Great guy, super talent.

Now that I have everybody's attention, did anyone hear the pre-game commentary by the broadcast crew: "Mike Young is a Master Tactician." Also, they noted, our record is deceiving: We’ve sustained 3 ACC losses by a total of 5 pts. In 10 secs. of play. Note: Toby Lawall has only played 308’, 11 games, we’re 3-2 in ACC games since his return, the 2 losses being the Stanford and SMU losses, the latter being improbable. Whereas he’s averaged 28’/game, those include the games he played prior to his injury that sidelined him for 9 games. As it is, he’s averaging 9.3 boards.and 12.7 pts/game. Those wouldn’t have made a difference in half of four losses? Barring another injury, working Lawal who is our best rebounder and third-leading scorer back into the rotation is a difference-maker. I'm not a basketball guy but none of Young's critics in Hokie Nation are paid to coach or opine on basketball. CMY wouldn't have been able to sustain a career as long as he has if he didn't know what he's doing. Please, enough. We're 2 games better and 14 losses fewer after 20 games this season than we were last season in 32 and w/11 games to play before the conference tournament. Who believes we can’t win 5/6 of the remaining games which include 5 games (incl. H vs. WF) vs. teams which have collectively won 10 games? If we can’t, then I’d agree, show Mike Young the door but we’d be back to Square One after defections. Young will be 64 in May, he’s on the back end of his career. Let the guy retire on his terms. He’s a class act in a cutthroat profession and a a great representative of our institution. I was sorry but not surprised at his departure for A&M but surprised he bailed out. However, he’s buried (1-7) near the bottom of the B1G.

...may have NBA skills but he is not NBA ready. The conventional wisdom is that a player w/remaining college eligibility isn't a Top 12 pick, don't declare. Ben Hammond (Soph) is a much-improved player than he was as a Freshman. Apart from the risk of injury, Neo will benefit from another year of CB.

I haven't called out anyone by name but I've seen too much trashing of CMY on this board and other blogs over the years. We've been in the ACC for 20 years. Mike Young is the only coach that won us a championship. That's worth something. As Jim Boeheim, or all people, said that other night, "he's an old school guy (no BS), straight forward, takes losses w/wins, moves on to the next game." Coach K was a notorious whiner who worked the refs. As a soccer ref of 30 years, I'm used to whining coaches. The best coaches keep their powder dry. I don't have respect for coaches who constantly complain. What's more, a Deacon I know who sat behind the Duke bench said K has an especially foul mouth. CMY isn't that guy. Players read the blogs. Trashing their coach undermines morale. Maybe you didn't but others have.

Fwiw, I'm not a basketball guy but am learning. I'm a soccer guy, lifetime and ref for 30 years. Note: basketball was derived from soccer and hockey. Concepts are the same, even if skills are not. Rules-wise, no screens in soccer, no offside in basketball, otherwise, frequency of subbing and NO timeouts in soccer, same games but the timeouts are a HUGE difference, particularly late in the game.. Note though that soccer is a, "Players' Game" because EVERY player is a QB or PG. College basketball, football and baseball are, "Coaches" games." Time/clock management don't really come into play much in soccer, beyond the obvious in a tight game w/one team leading, at least the way they do in football and basketball. Coaches have little in-game control in soccer, at least at the pro level because only 3 are allowed and thus in-game adjustments are somewhat limited. Last season we didn't have a real PG, this year we have 2, Ben Holland for one being much improved. Is Neo NBA-ready now? He makes mental mistakes, sometimes situational and it appears he's trying to impress scouts. Is he worth a Top 12 pick? How much time will it take for him to develop? .

A) this is a resilient, gritty group that has won more games in 19 played than last year's did in an entire season; B) we've lost 5 games, 4 in which our best athlete and rebounder didn't play. Our 3-conference losses have been by a total of 5 pts, 2 by way of last-second 3 pt. shots: C) We're in the middle of the ACC pack w/12 games to play, 6 of which are below us in the standings: D) as for ND being w/o their best player, see B above. As they say in Philly, "enough already."

..if Miami gets to keep all $14M of its CFP money? Who believes Miami won't bolt from the ACC at the first opportunity and refuse to pay an exit fee? One of the reasons/advantages of conferences is revenue-sharing. If Miami doesn't want to share revenue, than let them go the way of ND and try to find schools that will schedule them in the other sports. Good luck w/that.

.That is, the irony of the Franklin hire. PSU has recruited VA for decades and yet in 2001 when Kevin Jones, a Philadelphia kid signed w/Tech, Joe PA wondered publicly what deal Frank Beamer had enticed Jones and his family to bring him into the fold. What Frank in fact offered was Mike Gentry. I was told that Paterno didn't put much store in weight training but KJ"s father did. The story goes that Joe thought weight training was a waste of time compared to drills and practice time. Franklin continued working the VA pipeline, notably signing (in 2018) Ricky Slade of Hylton HS, Woodbridge HS, the highest-rated player in VA at the time. But Slade found the RB room crowded and transferred to ODU in 2020. The irony is sweet: not only have we hired Franklin but the VA pipeline to Sate College is likely shut down and we're already receiving commitments from PA kids - as from elsewhere - who were previously committed to PSU.

SEC had 5 road wins, ACC 4. The seven (7) others were home court wins.

Someone posted on Facebook recently that the weasel had no answers after Liz Kitley was lost to injury at the end of last season. I thought about that and think there's something to that. Maybe his success was more about the players than his coaching. Next year will be telling when Georgia moves on. The weasel is not a passionate coach. Staley and Mulkey are. (Don't know about Schaefer, Texas). Given what he started - and achieved - in Blacksburg and the less intense ACC, I think his chances to win a NC were better @ Tech than @ UK. Thoughts?

Does anybody out there know what the NIL Football rankings by school are?

There are over 2,000 players in the (football) transfer portal. We are hardly unique.

If this team can finish 10-10 or thereabouts, it will be a testimony to CMY's coaching ability. Given players lost to expiring eligibility, player defections, late dismissal of the player projected to be the PG and pre-season expectations (#14) he has done a great job coaching these guys up. Yes, the league, overall, is "down" but that's on the other teams, not us.

10-10 would be the same record as last season. As for Transfer Portal losses, John Camden landed @ UDelaware, Coastal Conference. He logged 4.4'/game as a Jr. last year but didn't figure in to MY's plans for this season. Yes, he's averaging more mins. and pts. A UD but for an 11-12/4-6 team in second-tier conference. MJ Collins and Tyler Nickel moved to Vandy but both are logging fewer mins. than they did in Blacksburg. Are they better off? Sean Pedulla (UMiss) is having a good season. We seem to be improving every game. I MY a bad coach? It says here no. He's above average but he gave us an ACC Tournament title which is more than can be said for any of his predecessors. He'll be 62 this year and will have 23 years under his belt as a HC, 6 as our coach. Figure another 2 seasons. Both MY and BW have shown there the potential of VT BBall but let's face it, football in Blacksburg. Another thing, we're a school that doesn't have a lot of cash to dole out and the TP and NIL have skewed everything in favor of those which do. Hard to blame Mike Young. But the fact that he's been able to filed a competitive team in the wake of the chaos over the year is a credit to him. As things stand now and looking at the remaining schedule, we figure to exceed pre-season expectations. , .

3-3 in ACC play w/14 games left. can anyone say, "!0-10?"

Let's face it, this kid can play. Not only is he quick (w/apologies to Tyrod, have we seen a QB quicker since #7?) but he makes quick decisions. As for his arm, those long passes should dispel any doubt. Drones may enter the Portal but he's not likely to be an NFL draft pick. FA, but not drafted. He was just too inconsistent this year, mostly due to injuries. Tuten looks like an NFL back to me, early rounds.

UVA does almost everything the right way. They just haven't figured out the football thing which in my mind they have no excuse for. They have: A) Institutional prestige; B) Facilities; C) A$$et$; D) Location. If Duke, a basketball school, can turn their program around and average 6-wins over 10 years, UVA should be able to average 7/8 wins per year. Time was, and not that long ago, Duke was posting (0-11, back to back and 0-12), 1, 2, and 3-win seasons and yet in 2013, a Coastal Division Championship even though the Blue Devils were throttled, 45-7 by FSU. Even so, Cutcliffe was 3-3 in bowls. UVA is unlikely to ever be considered at,"football school," but so what? Six to eight wins per season, bowl games every other year, wouldn't satisfy our fan base but UVA isn't us. It's pathetic that UVA performs below its potential on a regular basis.

...I kind of like Elliot as I did Mike London. Both are decent guys. (Bronco was a misfit in Charlottesville.) UVA did London no favors. Two years @ UR where he won a NC w/players he inherited and having not built upon what Dave Clawson started was not preparation for the mess Groh left him. (Al Golden was the better choice given what he had accomplished @ Temple.) London is in a good place now. He deserves another shot @ the !-A level, but at a mid-major. As for me, A) I belong to a VT/UVA family. My brother and a sister went to UVA, as did 2-nieces and many good friends. But 1-BIL is a Hokie. I don't see the VT/UVA rivalry in the same light as Alabama/Auburn, Texas/OU, Texas/A&M), Clemson/USC, UNC/Duke, UF/FU (boo hoo), etc. UVA is a great school and we have nothing to apologize for. There is little academic competition between Tech and Virginia, little curriculum overlap. We don't compete for the same students. In fact, we compliment each other which along w/W&M reflect well on the Commonwealth. Do I like to beat them? Yes. But whatever my negative feelings about UVA are, they pale by comparison to my antipathy for UNC. Sorry folks, I've been around too long (I'm 75) and my connections to UVA by way of family and friendship are too dense.

..and a question. We played well-enough to win. Waz we robbed? Broadcast crew (which had no impact on the game) was all-in w/Miami. They couldn't stop gushing over Cam Ward who is very good. Yet one wonders if they weren't reading from a script handed to them pre-game by the League. Could it be that since FSU has crashed and burned the league has a lot riding on Miami, being, "back" for the umpteenth time (they never are)? Josh Pate isn't very impressed. I must admit that in the early stages it looked like the 'canes would blow us out but of course they didn't. Kudos to the players for the comeback.. Still credit must be given to the broadcast crew for questioning the "holding" call on Prioleau's TD and for the overruling on the last play. Very bad night for the officiating crew . which raises my question: How long did it take the Ref to overrule? Did anybody put a stopwatch to that? It seemed like it took an eternity? Didn't the officials huddle prior to the Ref checking the replay? The Ref wasn't very convincing. Now, on the fake FG, yes, hindsight was 20:20 but still. A long interception return to the Red Zone? You have to get points out of that. Go up 30-17 and the extra 3 pts puts us in the position at the end to win by a FG. Too much time left on the clock after the 2nd FG. Down 0-3 w/a qtr. of the season gone, who believes FSU can win 6 of 9 to qualify for a bowl w/Miami (A), UNC and ND (A) Clemson and arch-rival Florida. Throw in Cal and road games @ SMU and Duke. Anybody see 6-wins there?

...same reason Nebraska, A&M and Mizzou left. Wonder if Texas is keeping their media-rights deal in the SEC. Anybody?
