2001 Miami team had 7(?) first round draft picks.
It’s probably the team with most NFL talent.
But 2001 Miami is not the best team ever in college football.
1995 Nebraska is way better.

Looking back on it, it's a miracle we almost beat that bunch. That's like an NFL all-star team.

Doesn't mean he is not knowledgeable as I am not, but still, rank 'em, spank 'em, yank 'em, and wank 'em. How can anybody profess to know the best team ever? There will be a million different opinions, except for Miami. Their next year's team is the best ever.

We scored a late TD and had a chance to tie it with a 2-point conversion but one of our WRs dropped the pass in the end zone (Ernest Wilford, IIRC). Ended up losing something like 26-24 to the eventual national champs and quite possibly the great team ever in college football history.

nobody even came close to threatening that team. That Miami team was great and probably are the best team since 2000 ('05 Texas and '19 LSU were great too) but the best team of all time shouldn't have needed a pinball interception to beat Boston College or a dropped 2 point conversion to beat us.

Closest game was the only game they trailed. That was Wazzou. Nobody else even challenged. They destroyed 4 different 10 win teams. Average score in those games was 49-18.25. They had no weaknesses at all.
I think that Miami team is an all-time great, at least as far as talent goes. I'm not sure they are better than that LSU or Texas team you mention. Or the '04 USC team that was unbeatable by the end of the season.

We were missing Ike Charlton as well as Ricky Hall and, for most of the game, Shyrone Stith. I do think that had we had all 3 of those healthy than it would have been different.
Peter Warrick’s effect on the game might have been mitigated by Charlton although kicking AWAY from Warrick would likely have been best option.
But, with the players that WERE available, the best team, unfortunately, won.

This past Spring, perhaps the wildest Big Dance overall illustrated this
I believe the highest seeded team in the Final Four, was a 4 Seed. In other words, a team ranked 13th-16th by the Selection Committee. Lots of upsets at the top. Brackets crashing everywhere.
That does not mean the Committee got it all wrong. "The favorite doesn't always win... but it pays to bet that way!"

VT did not. So they aren’t even the best team of 1999.
Maybe if they make a ranking of the best runner ups of all time the 1999 team can make it. I see no other teams on the list that didn’t win the championship.

No one who didn’t go to VT would rank the 99 Hokies as one of the top 50 or 100 college teams of all time.
They were a great team and will always be remembered fondly. But without maroon and orange glasses on they don’t hit the best of all time list.

If I emailed 100 sports writers right now, and asked them to name the 200 best college football teams of all time, a runner-up FBS team doesn’t make the list for any of them unless they went to Virginia Tech

My overall summation, of this whole matter...
WestyHokie started this thread referring to someone's greatest teams of all time list. The link to that list, he titled, 'No love for 99 Hokies'.
You stated, in response to that original post:

I pointed out that ESPN had at least three teams in the Top 40 of their Top 150, teams that were not named National Champion.
Now, this does not mean that you support ESPN's list. I do not wish to misrepresent what you say.
I pointed out that 2012 Mount Union, a Division 3 team, made the list. I did then question that, if that team made the list, do people really think they would be favored over 1999 Virginia Tech?
You made an excuse for Mount Union. Okay, your opinion. Hard for me to think they would be favored against the 1999 Hokies, but to each their own.
Using your criteria, should 1979 USC, 1971 Oklahoma, and 1983 Nebraska (as well as any other teams that did not win it all) not make that list?
If you think so, fine. As long as you are consistent.
But I ask you... much like the Playoff Committee this season, "best instead of most deserving," would you favor 1999 Virginia Tech over 2012 Mount Union, see it as a coin toss, or do you believe 2012 Mount Union would be favored?
If you are fine with Mount Union, a Division 3 team making the list, I do not see how the 1999 Hokies would not be in the conversation, even if ultimately not chosen for such a list.
You seem to intimate that only Tech fans would think that their school, not having won a National Championship, might somehow think that their team could rank somewhere in the greatest ___ number of teams ever. I guess 1979 USC, 1971 Oklahoma, and 1983 Nebraska, among others, none of their schools would make such a claim. Only Virginia Tech, right?
Where would I rank 1999 Virginia Tech, if I were making a list? I do not know. But if ESPN (not to assume that they are right) chooses a Mount Union team on the list of Top 150, it is not totally out of reason to *consider* 1999 VT.
