Posting History (84)

Fine. That was never my point

I just disagreed with your premise that forcing Beamer to fire assistants didn't turn him into a good coach. And it seems you now agree.

You may notice

I didn't mention Pry. My point is only about Beamer

I was around then too

Just because people wanted him fired, didn't make him bad. And his new assistants didn't teach him how to coach.

Frank was not a bad coach.

He was a good coach who had to figure out how to succeed at a new level.

MD gets a guaranteed game with Rutgers

I guess it is good for travel... In all though I like this idea - nice to see the conference prioritizing having all teams play each other frequently while still preservng some traditional annual matchups. I think I would have gone with 2 every year opponents per team to help build/maintain rivalries. That would still give plenty of games (7 in this case) to cycle through the other teams. Yes I know that some teams do have 2 rivalry games...

what about fans and message board posters?

I'd be willing to up my number of idiotic posts for a fat NIL deal. 😁

it might not be shocking, but it still hurts

we have some staff rebuilding ahead of us and it is getting late in the game. and Rudolph was Pry's biggest get as a coach in year 1. Hopefully we replace the position well..

athletes are going to need to read the fine print of their NIL deals.

I suspect that some of those deals will include clauses about playing time and staying on the team. I don't know that they will/do, but if some company is using this as an advertising mechanism, they won't want to play good money for someone who is riding the pine or suspended.

I dunno, there are some good games in there

Purdue, NC State are both fun home games. Pitt has become a rival. would be nice to beat them. Wake is kind of neutral for me, but I don't mind that game the Syracuse and ODU games are not intriguing in any way for me.

Time will tell.

I am rooting for Pry and every player on this team. I want VT to be successful. But I am not ready to say we know a huge corner has been turned in the last couple of weeks. Yes, getting some good recruits for this year's class is good, and Drones and Jennings are good portal pickups. But those few commits don't guarantee giant step forward or success. It is nice that our QB options are deeper. Adding Jennings while losing Smith may be a wash. Our team has to improve a lot just to get to playing at a bowl eligible level, let alone good. I will wait until we have some measurable results next year before I decide how much progress has been made.

I think all the bowl plans have already been made.

This is one of the reasons I don't like that Army/Navy is played this late. I get it is a special game, but it should be played on rivalry weekend. It is a regular season game like every other game.

I would phrase it like we miss the success we had during the Beamer era

The heyday of Frank in the late 90's through the 2000's is not the model for a successful program at this point. We are not going to dominate VA recruiting like Frank was able to in his prime. There is a lot different in college football from then to now. Transfer portal, NIL, Playoffs, SEC and BIG have become mega conferences with huge TV deals that tip the balance of power even more in their favor. Not saying if Frank came along now, he would not succeed, but he would have to do it a different way than he did back then. Our real problem is that we have effectively wasted the program build that Frank did. We are unable or unwilling to dedicate the resources needed to sustain VT as a football power.

how much is he getting at CU?

I am not sure we would have ponied up enough to get him. But it is a shame if/that we didn't try. I know a few people here last year mentioned him as a good target when we were in our coaching search. I personally would have loved to get him, but that ship has sailed.

What are you seeing that makes you think the defense will be better?

I am not arguing here, I just want to know if I am missing something. Are there indications of players coming in through the portal that I missed? Otherwise, I don't know that I see significant improvement (yet). We have some players to replace like Dax and Ty Garbutt. I think losing Chatman will hurt, not that he was our best defender, but he was pretty good and becomes another spot/depth that we need to fill. We definitely need to improve the D-line for next year. There should be some benefit given Strong should be healthy, and we can expect some improvement from players Delane. Peoples and Tisdale coming back are a plus.

I guess it depends on the level of improvment

If we only marginally improve or don't improve at all I think our ceiling is at 4 wins If we are about the same or slightly better Losses: Purdue, FSU, NC State, Pitt, Syracuse, Wake, Louisville 50/50: ODU, UVA, BC Probable Wins: Marshall, Rutgers IMO we need major improvement to get to a 6 or 7 win level.

We definitely have a tougher schedule but

another 3 win season would be tough on the current coaching staff. I would expect severe shake ups if that were to happen.

Pry said no. He said if you enter the portal your scolly is gone

Now he left the door open for reconsideration on a case by case basis "I do tell them that once they enter the portal, their scholarship is no longer there. I would have the option to bring them back if that was our choice. That’s certainly not guaranteed, and usually not the case."

He is 27-5 at Jackson State

Say what you want about him. But he has backed up his talk everywhere. Probably the best cornerback of all time. Played professionally in two sports. He knows what it takes to win. His charisma and national brand will certainly land him recruits. I expect he will win at CU.

complete list as of this post

DJ Harvey - Cornerback Mattheus Carroll - Defensive End Lakeem Rudolph - Defensive End Desmond Mamudi - Defensive Tackle Armani Chatman – Cornerback Kaleb Smith - Wide Receiver Enzo Anthony - Long Snapper * Walk-on Keshon Artis - Linebacker Tink Boyd - Wide Receiver * Walk-on Will Kakavitsas- Wide Receiver * Walk-on

see link

Go up to Football on the menu and choose 2022 Roster for a list of people entering the portal. (Just kidding y'all) 24/7 link below - note it will take a little while for it to catch up as people enter the portal.

It's gonna be a busy portal season

I am counting at least 8 transferring out at the time of this post with more to come I'm sure. I presume we will be pretty active to replace most of those guys.

If we don't do those things be ready for us to be mediocre at best.

The reality is if we don't remain competitive in facilities, player development and recruiting spending. All we can hope for is a rare fluke year where we play for a conference championship. I am not dreaming, just stating what it takes to have a top football program. If you think we can't do those things, get ready for 6-6 seasons forever.

The model needs to be in how the program is built and is run

I don't really care about the style of play as long as we win. We need to be a program that prioritizes player development, maintaining competitive facilities to recruit and retain players. Spends money on recruiting. And assembles a coaching staff that knows how to utilize all of that, and is good at game day coaching to get wins.

your point is good however that is what you get with a playoff system

Didn't the Giants win the superbowl with a 9-7 record and beat a 16-0 Patriots team in the process. (note I could have my years mixed up here...) Once you move to a playoff system instead of just voting for the best team. You open the door for a team with a worse record to get hot at the right time and win it all. To me there is nothing wrong with that. I would not have an issue with Utah or LSU making it to the playoffs in a play your way in scenario of conference champs being eligible.

I always thought they should have made the conf champ games a sort of

defacto first round to the playoffs. Win your conf championship, you are in. play it down from there. No back doors..

last year's class had several 4 stars per 24/7

I guess it depends on which service you look at, but johnson, givens and gosnell were all composite 4 star on 24/7

If you were him and based on last year

Would you think you would get solid development here. Guessing we have little to no chance to land him.

meh

He has 1 year of eligibility, and he did not look especially good in the 1 start he got. combine that with the injuries and we would be taking a gamble. It could pay off but I think there will be better options out there. No matter what we have a lot of work to do on offense.
