If you had to wager, who do you believe VT actually lands as Head Coach?
Chesney is my vote. I do like James Franklin but I think he goes elsewhere or sits out for better options. I THINK that I hope I'm wrong but honestly I won't lose a minute of sleep over VT whiffing on Franklin.

I honestly think he’d do pretty good with the financial support promised.
I’m ready to be tarred and feathered.

I’ve liked Chesney all the long. I would love to see him be the next coach.
But if it’s Franklin, I’m cool with that too.

I think Franklin would not do well at Arkansas but its his decision at the end of the day. It just "feels" like an announcement is going to be made tomorrow morning breaking during College Gameday.

Chesney. I think VT gets tired of dickering with Franklin.

VT talked to 2-3 candidates on Monday/Tuesday of last week
That was when Franklin/Sexton went to PSU to negotiate the language of his buyout and used the agreed upon terms from VT. PSU agreed late yesterday on the buyout language (final approval was given) so I would imagine that VT was expecting an immediate "Yes" late yesterday and when that didn't happen, they have put Franklin on the clock and are going a bit further with candidates, 2, 3 and 4.

So PSU agreed to JF buyout terms, now he’s waiting to see if FSU opens?

Yea, JF buyout negotiations around less money vs being able to steal player
And recruits from PSU

Some donors at PSU have a real hard on for JF
so its very understandable that he wants to negotiate a settlement now and not look over his shoulder....

I still think it's Franklin
But the legal review was done late yesterday. There may be a signature or some other communication with Sexton but it's still active and moving forward. I don't think Sexton/Franklin would go this far if it wasn't real and serious. ** Edited by AirborneHokie96 at 11/14/2025, 4:38:13 PM

Sexton isn't a great negotiator if it looks easy. Have to makes things hard
then pull it back from the "brink" so he can look like he earned his money.

Just as much of a chance of getting somebody on nobody's radar
so far. Jimmy Sexton has lots of clients, VT has proven we have lots of money. If JF has moved on, then Sexton will almost surely try and present somebody so he gets a piece of that 10 mil.

Franklin
I was skeptical for a while but him showing up at the ODU game last night seems to be more than just a social call or coincidence. That said, I’m with you: no Franklin, no problem. Mullen or Chesney would be better long term hires IMO. Superior game tacticians who develop players will serve VT better IMO.

I think he attended the game for him, not because of VT.
It's very obvious why he was there in my opinion.
SCHokie1103 SCHokie1103

So why do you think he was there for himself? Just curious.
M

8mo
3 reasons
- He gets media attention - Both of the head coaches were former assistants - Scouting portal quarterbacks (Joseph) Sounds like a perfect personal business trip to me.
SCHokie1103 SCHokie1103
8mo
I get his connections there. But unless he is talking to those former
assistants for jobs at VT and looking at ODUs QB that tore us up. If that’s the case I get it unless he just didn’t have anything better to do with his time than to be at that game. lol

The story sounds good but that is like 5 hours away from Blacksburg. It
seems equally likely it was just a coincidence. But the speculation about potential assistant coaches also could be the other 50% chance since both coaches may would be on the list of someone he would try to get for staff.
Hokiefied Hokiefied

It wasn’t a social call
If I had to guess, he’s looking for an OC and QB for his next team. At least a QB.

Still betting on JF...Chesney would save on costs but would probably
not increase near-term donations either. I don't see JF going to ARK(feels like BKelly@lsu), but possibly FL if Lane passes.. IDK.just guessing

But on a fixed amount. VT needs our support!

Yes very true !
I for one will sit out on contributing if Chesney is the guy. Nothing against him and I'm sure he is great coach ; but history proves that " newby " coaches wilt at VT . Just not exciting! Everything remains the same at VT. Fingers crossed for JF.

All the big givers are holding back
Key question for chesney -no 1 can he in one meeting comvince fhess tentative givers he can deliver immediately like franklin; if he cant all funds are frozen - vf nil stays fhe same and also fhe 60 million extra vt needs is harder fo give So no 1 skill sales to get rhe momey immediately then recruit 4-5 stars now and get at least 8 wins next yr Vt does not need 220 mil budget for a jmu coach

So now the big money thing is dependent on the new hire? Same with GM, CEO?
That's going to be a quagmire getting all the money on board for each hire.

Given that a knock against Franklin is that he has trouble winning enough
marquee games, how will they feel if those same troubles follow him with ACC marquee games? Will they still feel that Franklin was the "right hire" at the time or have buyer's remorse?
