Wow. Didn't see that one coming
Maybe Nick can restore some order to that dumpster fire in Dallas. Speaking as a Commanders fan, I hope he doesn't.

Growing up in Springfield, I lived through so much phenomenal history with the “Washington Redskins” as my team. To change the name because someone else got the idea in their head that we were all just being racists was, and is still, quite insulting as well as idiotic.

It's insulting to the indigenous people when label them as "redskins"
especially with a cartoon indian head plastered on the helmets. You being an oriental guy, how would you feel if your favorite NFL team name is the Washington Chinks? And the logo is a cartoon head with slanted eyes? Let's ask the poster RandomAsianGuy how he would feel ** Edited by Windows NT at 2/12/2025, 11:04:05 PM

TIC - As a person of Asian descent...
You're a little off with your slur, since I believe the breakdown of asian ethnic groups in the Metro DC,NoVA and MD area is predominantly Korean, followed by Vietnamese, Indian, Filipino among others, I think a Korean slur would be more in line than a Chinese slur. I don't know the specific slur for Koreans, can any of you racists out there help us out?

Waste of time to try to educate these folks
Racism is irredeemable. It is form of hate that a person will use any justification to hold onto. These folks know exactly why the name was changed. They just don’t care. The current political environment has brought all these people out of the woodwork.

Disagree, it's starting to stick.

Not really. Media isn't reflective of reality.
BG Hokie BG Hokie
Where did I mention the media? Is zanderhokie the media? He's a walking
anecdote of it sticking such that we're having this overly gay conversation.
M
marcbvtgm
Good grief. The media parroting it does mean it has wide spread acceptance.
Yet another explanation of the obvious... ** Edited by marcbvtgm at 2/12/2025, 4:30:36 PM

How is the nefarious "media" referring to an NFL team
How is the nefarious "media" referring to an NFL team by the name that NFL team has chosen as their name, the NFL's accepted as that team's name and is used on every single piece of official branding, merchandise and all official records, statistics, and legal documents considered "parroting"?? You don't like it, We get it... But it is THE NAME of the NFL Franchise for Washington DC.
M
marcbvtgm
Good god...are some people that dense?
I'm not saying the media is right or wrong for doing it. What I'm saying is that you shouldn't confuse hearing media pretty exclusively use the new name doesn't mean that the name change has universal acceptance.
BG Hokie BG Hokie
Good grief is right. Nobody but you brought up the media. I work in
Washington DC and live in the suburbs. I assure you the majority of people I interact with calls them the Commanders and, FWIW, it's construction so it's like 95% Trump voters that don't give an EFFF about being PC.
M
marcbvtgm
That's great. I do too and I hear mocking names as well as Commanders.
It seems to be a common theme with you to move goal posts when you don't have a good argument after someone contests one of your nonsensical claims. The point is there is still resistance to the latest name - and I'm willing to bet that if it were to return to Redskins, it would be accepted far more deeply and broadly. That the media uses the new name universally is not a proxy for public sentiment. I frankly don't care. I am NOT a fan of the Redskins or the Washington Football Club or the Commanders or the Comanches or whatever someone calls them. But I do call it the way I hear it.
BG Hokie BG Hokie
LOL, this is amazing. Can you please explain where I moved the goalposts?
THE ONLY ASSERTION I'VE MADE IS THAT COMMANDERS IS STARTING TO STICK RELATIVE TO SOMEONE ABOVE THAT SAYS NOONE CALLS THEM COMMANDERS. You're the one that said it's not really sticking and then in this very post I'm responding to basically say you hear people call them mocking names and also the Commanders. i.e. you hear them called Commanders and therefore that is even more evidence that you have provided that it is starting to stick. Hey, guess what, I also call them the Commies, a mocking name. So kudos to that irrelevant point. Show me these examples of me being someone that moves the goalposts on here. We've interacted before? Give examples of me moving the goalposts. Ok, so there is some resistance to changing the name. NO ****! That in ZERO.ZERO WAYS conflicts with my assertion for which I have IN NO WAY moved the effing goalposts.
Zanderhokie Zanderhokie
Personally, I thought it was a pretty dumb name change and mishandled
by the previous ownership, going from Redskins to "Washington Football Team" to Commanders. Not surprising, as Dan Snyder and his minions basically mismanaged every single aspect of the franchise for 30+ years. I have friends who are card-carrying members of native tribes and none of them wanted the name changed so... yeah, silly. That said... I live in the DC area and can attest that basically everyone here now calls them Commanders. IIWII.
M
marcbvtgm
Really? Do people sing "Hail to the Commanders"?
Zanderhokie Zanderhokie
I think they actually came up with some new song
Wouldn’t know personally. I haven’t been to one of their games in years.
M
marcbvtgm
If they did, I certainly didn't hear it being sung at a bar in the playoffs

Haha that's fair. "The other side lives in a bubble, but not me!"
I do think there's a difference between saying "nobody says it" and "I don't hear it", but your point is well taken. Also, I do hear Redskins occasionally to be more accurate. It's often coupled with an eye roll and a correction. Most people are saying Commanders from what I hear. Also a caveat, I'm not in VA, so people probably feel less allegiance to the former name here. ** Edited by Hokie622 at 2/14/2025, 1:06:18 PM

I don't call them Commanders because that's a dumb name, I say "Washington"
Not in favor of going back. I like Red Wolves, personally. Would be a cool mascot and unique in the NFL.
