Pound their chests thinking they are the flagship school in this state. Please. They wish they were half the sports school we are. They finally had a fluke good year in basketball after a fluke good year in basketball. Next year will go back to normal where we will dominate in football, we will dominate in basketball, and we will continue being THE dominant athletic program in the state. They think the SEC and Big 10 want them because they won a national title in some sport like ballroom dancing 60 years ago. Enjoy the Atlantic 10 kids.

UVA has 36 team national championships (according to virginiasports.com). and VT has zero. That pretty much sums it up.
They've got a couple I'd really like to have: MBB (2019) and baseball (2015). They've got seven in men's soccer (including five in six years, from 1989-1994), which would be cool. Their most impressive program at the moment is women's swimming and diving, with six straight (2021-2026).

VT people had an early front row seat to know how good of a coach Ryan Odom is...you better get used to them being at the top of the ACC. 30 wins in year 1 isn't a fluke.

Ryan Odom was an assistant at VT with Seth and he is first class guy. Much like Tony Bennett. I don’t like losing to them in anything but they had a heck of a yrsr

they earned wins, it is because they bought them. That is the only way uva could have a successful football season. In MBB and WBB they had plenty of money to buy players or they would not have any post season opportunities. If you don't believe that look at Vanderbilt. They have been doormats in the SEC for decades but when it became acceptable to pay players they suddenly became relevant. They now have football, MBB, and WBB. All because they have money. College sports have become a joke.

What he did last year with that squad was masterful to win as many road games as he did.
This year was a “ who is healthy enough to play” and he still had them in all but one game…
Keep Hammond, Gurdak, Johnson and hope Hansberry ( at a lower $ figure) recovers.
Would hate to cast Hansberry off but there is no guarantee he will be able to come back thus the lower $ amount.
Now go get some dudes with long arms that weigh over 215

If true…. We will spend every penny retaining our best players and have barely anything left over for a starting center😭 and combo guard. Plus we need an addition on the wing.
This is the AD punishing MY for essentially dealing with injuries. I’m just praying you are completely wrong here because jeez…. It’s completely wrong if true….

cover for the need of two dollars. That is not to say he is doing a good job with his dollar, just that the end result of what most of us want takes two dollars right now and we don't have it to spend.
I am dissapointed that athletic fund raising has not been incorporated fully under the University wide fund raising. Until that is done, we will continue to have competing forces after the donors.

Just because BBall had one budget last year, doesn't mean it would be the same next year. The AD and to a large degree, the big donors set the budget for each program on a year to year basis.
If we look just at player compensation, the AD establishes the Revenue Sharing split among the main programs (essentially just Football, Men's Basketball and Women's Basketball). In 2025 D-1 colleges were allowed to offer a total of $20 million to players in revenue sharing. I don't know the exact breakdown but for the sake of argument let's say its $15, $4 and $1 million for FB, MBB, and WBB.
Lets say part of the deal to get Franklin on board was to boost Football's share to $17 million. And as a result MBB will go down to $2 million and WBB stays at $1.
Meanwhile the big donors and NIL groups are setting their own priorities for which programs they fund. Let's say there's also $10 million in NIL funds available, and the donors are excited about James Franklin and not so much about Mike Young. They may shift from a $7 / $3 split to an $9/ $1 split between FB and MBB.
So our total "budget" hasn't changed, but football has gone from $22 million to $26 million and MBB has gone from $7 million to $3 million.
The numbers I used are just examples, the are not VT's actual splits and NIL totals.
Until GC's post I had been hearing rumblings on the message boards that overall Basketball funding was actually expected to get a boost for 26-27. Guess not anymore..

**Athletic Department tells mens basketball they'll be increased to $10 million**
Oops...we lied, we dont have the money...we only have 30 million
**Football stays at $25 million though, Mens basketball gets cut to $3 million**

Indiana, Auburn, Ole Miss
All had high dollar rosters (most more than double VT) and missed the NCAAT
Some had injuries (USC with Rodney Rice and their best player leaving the team late in the year), some had the coach quit (Auburn) but most just couldnt put it together

In 2023-24, their men's basketball budget was cited to be $4.13 million. In 2024 it was reported that they had $2M for basketball. In early 2025, their coach indicated they had "just enough" NIL to retain players but not aggressively chase portal additions (though their roster does include some high-profile transfers).
