Anyone seen any practices or workouts? How is this team meshing together?
Seems like we brought in some solid talent though a few are more potential than experience. We know what we have in our returners so there is optimism- on my part, anyway. Any info/updates will be appreciated.

Awesome report QCP. Those comparisons to Hurley are encouraging. We seem to
have a freshman come in and put up some big offensive numbers most years. Maybe it can be Arnett this year, if we have one. Our outfield defense last year lacked “rhythm” to put it mildly, imo. Of course we were trying to get bats in the line up but if we have natural outfielders who can hit it works out better. Thanks for the in-depth data.

QCP do you know what kind of outfielder Arnett is? Arm, speed, glove, etc.?
His plate consistency and productivity (as you mentioned) makes one think that his bat may need to be in the line up. If he is a proficient outfielder he will be an intriguing early option-at least until he shows that he’s human and not quite ready.

Franklin is a former OC. And a longtime, successful, head coach. He wants
his offensive system implemented. One that obviously has been good for his success. That’s why he has gone this route, imo. If Rahne had been available he possibly would have gotten the job. What head coach, especially the one with the third best active winning percentage in major college football, would hire an OC and say, “the offense is yours”.

My opinion is that this team should be better defensively, and faster. I
think the personnel better fits Duffy’s style. A good example would be posting up our best three point shooter a lot last year because we needed her height inside. This squad was recruited for the style Duffy plays. I’m pretty optimistic.

Guard height is the concern. We have quickness, toughness, and athleticism
but are undersized generally speaking.

Fair point. I would have guessed half or less on appearances over 10 ERA.
I still think he will pitch pretty well for UNC in a lesser role than he had at Tech. He’ll make more money with less stress.

One bad outing can ruin a college ERA for the season, especially for a
reliever. The only ERA antidote for a bad outing or two is a lot of good outings. Crowl had a subpar start this past season but he has been very effective over the course of his career, imo. Looking at Carolina’s pitching year to year I would say that they feel good about him, too. They don’t appear to be in the market for projects.

The umpire got in his head. The umpire was right when the whole thing
started, imo. But after some inappropriate antics by the young pitcher, it did seem to get personal with the “highly touted” umpire. I told the guys I was watching the game with (before Glauber’s first pitch) that he was obviously losing his focus. For Forbes to pull him so quickly was telling because with 2/3 of the game left everyone Forbes could/would bring in the rest of the night would be-on paper- inferior to Glauber.

Agree with everything you wrote. I will only add that the true pursuit of
excellence is usually easier than maintaining excellence once you get there. And when you move somewhere else to get a big paycheck it only adds to the pressure. Do you think the majority of people view Canady as the best pitcher coming out of college or the highest paid? I know how I feel.

I wouldn’t call it backing in to the regionals. I call it playing the long
game. Nursing injured players along so they would possibly be back and at their best down the stretch. Especially pitchers. I think he did a great job of having our team play their best when they had to.

True story Chip. My wife and and I and our three young local granddaughters
were standing beyond the left field wall when Lyla’s catch started the triple play. We were talking to two women we met a couple of innings earlier. They were Lyla’s mom and grandmother. It was a very enjoyable moment to be a part of.

I’d like to know why he didn’t pitch in the last two weeks? The fact that
he is leaving doesn’t suggest injury. He had seemed to earn the staff’s confidence and was instrumental in us getting a bid, imo. I thought he would be used against UCLA until he wasn’t. I actually speculated that he would come in to relieve Clement for the 9th because his change up is so good that he has been hard to time up.

He should been taken out when he gave up the home run to the left handed
batter. We were still up by one run. That being said, he got us out of a two on and one out jam the inning before. No one was questioning how many games he had pitched in then.

Us getting into the NCAA traces back to that, as well. I understand
protecting pitchers but what is magic about 104 pitches? Why would fewer alarms be raised by 95, or 99? How many breaking balls did he throw out of 104 vs. his norm? How stressful was his outing? How many warm up pitches did he throw? Weather conditions come in to play. I guess all those things are charted too. I always go back to 2008 and Joba Chamberlain with the Yankees and the “Joba rules”. Limited pitch count and appearances then transition him into a starting role. The result? Shoulder problems that shut him down. There seem to be a lot of variables to this pitching deal.

looked at old video but it seemed like his shot got flatter and flatter the more he struggled.

While playing at JR in a regional game at Patrick Henry-Glade Spring Angela
struck out 24 batters in a 9 or 10 inning game. That was her top number in high school. I think it was in 2003, their first state title year. Another interesting tidbit about that year is that JR fell behind 1-0 to Northumberland in the state title game (6th or 7th inning) before rallying to win, 2-1. Loren Messick, now Lauren LaPorte of JMU fame, hit a triple off of the right field fence and scored off of a WP/PB. I never knew how it was scored.

Iron Gate is partly in Alleghany County and partly in Botetourt County.
Angela attended Alleghany High as a freshman. To transfer to James River her family moved to a house just inside the Botetourt County line. James River-Buchanan is in Botetourt County. Denny was involved with a radio station in the Allegheny Highlands region and moved to a location good for Botetourt residency and still close to his job.

This roster, using last year’s ppg from their various teams, shows
Tech“returning” over 90 points of scoring. I realize I’m taking some liberties here. Maybe I’m being too optimistic, even for me, but I think this will be a better squad than last year. The talented circus acts have moved on and the blue collar overachievers have moved in. Play ball.

Agree. Offensive-based outfield line up. Hughes should play center and
Gates right in late game situations with the lead- which was not the case today. The bases-loaded catch the Carolina right fielder made when we were up, 3-2, changed the game and momentum. We would have been up 6-2. Then late, hanging on on a close game, we misplay a deep high fly ball.

No guarantee that the arm will show up although Renfrow has been pretty
reliable. Have you see Stieg’s last couple of starts? Whatever risk it was, as you said, it worked.

And the season is 50 plus games, not the first 15-20. As I have said
previously, baseball season is a long game. Our coach put us where we are today because he didn’t panic in February and March. Having a key ACC tournament win with Renfrow still to pitch is benefit of the long game Szefc played, imo.
