When was the last time in any team sport VT started bad and finished strong
We all know it's typical to be hyped and fail for our beloved Hokies, I have a strange feeling VT will take down UCLA!

1977 baseball - started 3-7 and rode a 31 game win streak to regionals
Back-2-back regional berths in1976 & 1977. Regional field was equivalent to super regionals now. Team was struggling at start of 77 season, but rode the 2nd longest win streak in college baseball history to go back. Joining Big East killed chances to go back as only the conf champ made it and FSU knocked us out in early 80s (despite VT having 2 teams with 50+ wins). It's the 50 year anniversary of those 76-77 teams, so just win, baby.

I think you mean the Metro Conference
Virginia Tech didn't become a full Big East member until 2000. Florida State eliminated VT from the Metro Tournament in Tallahassee in1985. That team won 50 games, and its starting pitching was led by lefthander Thornton "Bean" Stringfellow and righthander Dell Curry. (Yes, that Dell Curry.) Their top position player was lefty irst baseman George Canale. The NCAA Tournament had 36 teams back then (no super regionals), and VT got passed over (shocker). A win or two more over South Carolina or Florida State would've made all the difference. ** Edited by GWS757 at 5/28/2026, 2:11:19 PM ** Edited by GWS757 at 5/28/2026, 2:12:47 PM
