Back-2-back regional berths in1976 & 1977. Regional field was equivalent to super regionals now. Team was struggling at start of 77 season, but rode the 2nd longest win streak in college baseball history to go back. Joining Big East killed chances to go back as only the conf champ made it and FSU knocked us out in early 80s (despite VT having 2 teams with 50+ wins). It's the 50 year anniversary of those 76-77 teams, so just win, baby.

We've had to stay in Wytheville for football before and graduation is even more harder to find rooms. Even Princeton WV and Troutville are often not options for graduation and the school even spreads it out by doing the individual college degrees on different days. When my son graduated in 2013, we stayed in the dorms. It is a big deal that books up rooms way beyond the 30 mile radius, but I think it has mainly been during the week in the past. Having on a Friday makes it even more challenging.

My husband was part of the 1977 baseball team and I asked the school to help me get hats made with their old baseball logo in orange and black (which is what they wore - no maroon). The 1976 and 1977 baseball teams went to back-to-back to regionals and the 1977 team rode a 31 game win streak to get back to regionals. Both are in the top 5 winningest percentage teams of all time for VT baseball and my husband kept tabs on most of them his whole life. When he died, they all were asking me about each other, so i got 30 of them to campus for a reunion. Softball was also playing that weekend and we had to exit/enter the baseball field near the track because the stands were under construction for baseball. I gave all the former players replicas of their orange and black hats with the logo to wear in photos. The softball parents invited us to tailgate with them since we were walking through their parking lot to get to baseball and we exchanged stories before one of their games. After that baseball game, one of the softball players sought me out as I crossed their parking lot and asked me for a hat. I told her the story of how baseball had no maroon on the uniforms in an era when the incoming AD (Bill Dooley) took orange off all the uniforms. Other teams only wore maroon and white, but baseball wore only black, orange and white for decades. They also used the old logo on the hat and the state of Virginia with TECH on their warm ups. The color combination of orange, black and white was retired in the mid-late 80s and the old logo was only sold as a "heritage" logo on very limited merchandise with the colors changed to include maroon when I reached out to the university. No one would do the correct color combination for our hats without university permission (there were rules about how the "heritage" logo could be used and it included maroon when I was trying to get the hats made). Eventually, I got athletics to agree to make the hats and they mocked up the orange, black and white version for me to proof it before they ordered the hats for me. I could not resell them and I have not been able to get them to make me more, so even the 2017 version is pretty coveted for us late 70s and early 80s baseball fans. Any way, the other softball players on that 2017 team were very intrigued by the design, but I literally gave them my last hat off my head. I think it was 2019, but could have been 2018, the softball team debuted all black uniforms that had the former baseball logo I had approved and their colors were only orange and white. I would like to think that hat was impetus for them making those uniforms. I can tell you the former baseball players really appreciated seeing them play in those. Oh, we did just celebrate the 50th reunion of the 1976 baseball team during the GT series this year. Too much going on that weekend to plan to be at softball, but many players made their way over in the hats I had made for them. Happy to see the logo I had athletics recreate for that 2017 baseball reunion is still on the softball player sleeve for their black uniforms (even though they added some maroon to the current black uniforms). I REALLY want a black visor with the orange and white "heritage" logo that softball wears now, but no one sells those. Put some in the auction for softball and I know a bunch of baseball players (and wives like me) would bid on it! The proof they sent me is below and appears to be the very same that they have used on the last 2 black version of the softball uniforms. I can tell you that 4 of the top 5 winningest percentage baseball teams of all time wore that logo, so I'm hoping it continues to bring the softball team the same luck. Go Hokies (baseball and softball)!

he felt she had been biased toward FSU in that game. That was an unsolicited comment when our calls were a little off base in that night’s game. I was nervous when she was behind plate for us on Sat, but there was a lot of inconsistency with all 3 umpires for us, so I’m sure the players were frustrated. Anni was even showing frustration in field over calls against our pitchers. When winning margins are that close, everything mattered. Tough loss that we can bounce back from.

…they are planning to kick people out of 5 rows to make room for VT parents after the UNC game. Lucky were across the aisle.

…but they were using RPI (which knocked Louisville to 5th). I presumed ACC would use our conference record standings to seat us (which puts us at 5th and Louisville at 3rd - as of today). Just trying to plan our tournament road trip and had hoped we would get a Wed bye, but now planning to be at the Wed 1:30 game just in case. I figure RPI is in play for hosting regionals, but does it have any role in ACC seeding?

..I did some research a few years ago when they refused to sell the Virginia Tech football game tickets to anyone that had not donated to athletics the year before and that year. I have no problem donating the year of the game to get seats, but they were clearly denying VT fans the chance to buy a seat when they did not come close to selling out the stadium that year. I pulled their funding records and the state had been subsidizing them for low ticket sales the last 2 years. That means all Virginia residents were subsidizing their inability to fill the stadium and yet, another state school could not buy tickets to a game that there. This was in 2023 and they had an official attendance of 43k in a 61.5k capacity stadium. When Hokie fans were buying a large amount of tickets to their women's basketball game in 2024 at JPJ, the "general admission" section was moved to the upper deck mid sales and the basketball coach put out a request to Hoo fans to fill the stadium. Lower level seats that were previously designated as "general admission" were now reserved and most of Hokie Nation was sitting in the rafters. UVA will be hosting the ACC Championships next month and I was shocked to see how poor the seating is. I've got tickets for the last 2 days, but don't know how any of us are going to be able to get in that place and secure seats with no reserved seats. Gates open 1 hour before first game, again. Supposedly, everything is general admission for that event (at least that is all you could buy online). It will likely be a mess.... When UVA fans cannot sustain their own budget for ticket sales, the taxpayers in Virginia subsidize them. We should not be prevented from buying a ticket or from securing an available ticket when their own fans aren't interested. We definitely should not be excluded from sitting in seats that were never "reserved" because everyone has free access to general admission seating....

They chose to come here to learn a game they love and we all need to appreciate that and treat them with grace and support. Stop making excuses for being a boor. Just stay home if you can't keep the boos to yourself.

that bought seats. We don't have an empty "upper bowl" for students to "fill in." Also, I do give my extra ticket(s) away to students, but it's hard to do that for basketball. They want to go with friends and 1 ticket is not attractive for basketball because they want to sit together. I have trouble giving away even 2 free tickets to students. Unless they can find seats with friends, they aren't as interested in a free basketball ticket as they are with a free football ticket. Need a bigger arena to do this in Blacksburg and let students sit general admission for free.....

...and UVA was, but not full. People buy the good season tix so they can go to Duke and a few big games and don't bother for many others. The school can't sell the student seats for these early games as season tix and they don't sell out for the individual games when students aren't here. I'm center court for men and women's, but we are rarely ever full (have a few empty seats for even big games). I do see more people showing up at women's games in the season ticket areas, but the crowd is mainly local senior citizens and families. Too many people buy these basketball season packages to get points for football and there isn't a great way to give back unused tickets for resale once you do that. UVA does allow season ticket holders to turn in their unused tix for resale at the gate for baseball and other sports. I've picked up some great seats from that for their games. I used to use TSL to get my unused tix to Hokies or find students to give away, but that option is gone. Still, I go to as many games as I can, but finding some one to pick up a midweek game is really hard (even with good seats) and I'm just not a fan of Seatgeek or the other resale sites.

I know they look blue on TV, but they are supposed to be purple and represent support for Alzheimer's, which the Syracuse coach's mother has. That's why Syracuse coaching staff is in purple and our coaches are wearing ribbons that look blue against our maroon.

COVID killed that tradition more than anything else. Today's students don't even know it's a "thing" unless they grew up going to football games in Lane.

It was a taunt/motivation that came out when we were on defense in late 70s and early 80s (Bruce Smith era saw keys go mainstream). By the 90s, people brought bottles of change that they shook with the keys on 3rd down to symbolize a "money play." Calling it "key play" time took away the mock of player payouts for play, but now they could get a new car or make more money for a big play. Granted an inside joke when it started, it's a pretty legit motivation now.

...you could clearly hear the rain hitting around announcers when 6th inning kicked in. That wasn't the case before then. I went to a meeting thinking we were a lock since they would either call it or delay it, but later find that we lost after a series of walks and hit players. Weather wasn't great the whole game, but it was audibly coming down after 6th inning. Is it possible it let back up? I get that they wanted to get that game in and not play 2 on Sat, but a rain delay certainly seemed warranted. I'm guessing they were afraid they'd never get back if they stopped it, but no one should have expected those gals to play in those conditions. I've even seen coverage of the Clemson runner shivering on base. Just so unfortunate that we'll never know how this would have turned out without forcing play during downpours, but maybe NCAA should push their selection show to Monday so these tournaments don't have to play in crazy weather.

...I was sitting in the middle of several player families for the Friday night game against FSU and there was a Hokie "fan" one row down that started off amicable enough. He was chatting up the family folks around him and was pretty vocal toward the officials, but when the game started to get away from our girls, he started screaming at them to "throw the ball" and other things. These girls were following their coaches and struggling to hang on to the game, but as FSU got the best of them with their speed, he got more frenzied. The moms around us told the crowd to stop yelling at the players, but this guy would not let up. Finally, the mother of a player (different from the one he was yelling at - that player's mom was actually sitting right below him) stood up, turned around, and looked him right in the eye while telling him sternly to "Stop yelling at the players." She wasn't irate, but she meant it and the player's mom was right between them. He may not have know they were Moms, but it was clear to everyone around us that he needed to shut up. Instead, the guy goes after her yelling "freedom of speech", "they're professional players" and "I'm a donor" to defend his nonsense. The whole section kept repeating "don't yell at the players" and he kept doubling down. Finally, another Mom got up, walked down and stood right next to him. She looked him in the eye and said "Are you yelling at our players?" He started spouting off to her about why he has a right to yell at them and luckily the police moved in. No one was about to hurt anyone, but none of us needed a "fan" like that behind home plate with the game on the line. The police asked him if he really wanted to ruin everyone else's experience and he started to push back, but finally got up and walked out with them. This behavior drives me crazy and it's from adults and alumni who should behave better. My son went to HS with the Glennon boys and we had to move at football games because the fans around us were brutal with what they would yell at Sean. His Mom got to the point that she couldn't even be in the stadium during his games and waited on campus until it was over to support him. I moved my seats after his senior year to be near students because, while the students may say things distasteful about our opponents, they rarely berate our own players. Can't say the same for our older "fans" and those people (you know who you are) just need to cut it out. I was proud of the softball Moms for sticking up for their players and was so frustrated by the "paid professional" justification that I heard from that guy and often see on TSL about our basketball players. These players can get money for name, image and likeness use. That doesn't give anyone the right to yell at them about how they are playing. Even if you were paying them directly for their performance, you can't yell at an employee because you want them to do something different. You can't berate your waiter without being asked to leave a restaurant and you can't yell at these kids just because you gave some money to the university. These players are still learning a game they love. They need our support and we need to have their backs when things don't go their way. Our coaches are not throwing games, they want these wins as much as the rest of us. They know more about what their players are prepared to handle and they will make mistakes. Just give everyone a little grace and let these kids play the game they love with all our support. No player should ever change their game strategy based on someone yelling at them from the stands. This week, we have a fresh start to do something great this season. Softball America predicts we will host. That says a lot about the quality of play this year and no one is happy about where we've stumbled. The good news is we have had the opportunity to learn from that and can move on to be even better, if we just believe in ourselves. Please be supportive and give these coaches, players, families and true fans a great experience when we all return to TSP.

Coach Young hasn't given up, but his peers sure have (and he lost more roster players than any of those other quitters did). These players haven't given up, but we all knew it would be a long hard slog to get them to gel with so many new faces and youth (they are all working hard to bring us a meaningful season and we need to respect that). What has given up are all the season ticket holders that don't bother to show up to the games this year (Cassell is sold out for the all ACC games, but never close to full). I know TSL took down their ticket exchanges, but please make an effort to show up or get your tickets to someone that will. UVA needs to see a packed Casey on Saturday and that's on Hokie Nation if it doesn't happen. Let's show this team some real love....

... the link was to a company that appeared to have an Indiana address (Dottiee.com) and they used a gmail email, so thought I'd help a small business. Almost 2 weeks ago, I got a notice that my order was shipping from china. A little pissed that it wasn't a small Indiana business, but price was good so I waited to see what I got. Yesterday, I got an alert from my credit card company about a charge I did not recognize. The website sited had nothing on it other than a customer service message and links. The charge said it was for games. I disputed the charge and went home to look at my statement as I am very careful to not scan my card any more. Found another suspicious charge last week that had a different web address, but same bland customer service page popped up when I went to it. Disputed that and was alerted that it is was a recurring charge. Looked for more and did not previously see how my charge for the afghans appeared on statement. I still have not received that shipment, but was billed for it over 2 weeks ago. Called credit company and they are also investigating the afghan site as it appears to have hit my card right before these weekly charges started showing up. They're not big charges, but recurring charges of about $45 each are going to add up if we hadn't caught them and the first one went through. I did more research for the company selling all these college afghans and scam tracker sites show high probability of it being a scam. Thought I was safe as a VT parent appeared to endorse the site for their purchase for a kid for Christmas, but I think it's all a scam at this point. The Coach Duffy ad was obviously off as the hands were not in proportion to her head, so I told a friend it was photoshopped. AI is possible, too. Scary part is that it appears the Chinese are now on our parents page and other Hokie pages phishing for credit cards. Do your research and don't believe everything you see.

I called in last week to ask to have our backs removed and they said they were starting a list, but no guarantee that they would be removed. Got a call today to renew my season tix and asked if the seat backs were going to be removed. They confirmed I'm on the list and said that everyone on list is supposed to be removed by BC game. They called me back later and told me mine should be gone before this weekend. Recommend calling ticket office if you want yours removed....

Not sure if you could get electronic ones from Vanderbilt directly, but the Hokies ticket office sent out hard copy.

Our spring game attendance was pretty comparable to the UVA game attendance at 2nd half. Neither was a sell out (UVA should have been but they refused to sell tickets to anyone that hadn’t donated to athletics the last 2 years). They didn’t score until well into 3rd quarter so UVA fans were abandoning ship early. Chris Long was recognized in the 4th quarter and the place was empty except for Hokies. Almost felt sorry for him. Tyrod on the big screen got a bigger cheer at our Spring game than he got with a special tribute time out.

Don't see why that would not count (or the other All American accolades she has received). It doesn't say has to be the only one recognized for a national award. That would be like not counting Michael Vick because he was only a finalist for the Heisman and didn't actually win it....

This means that college coaches cannot offer money as an incentive for high school athletes to come play at their school, nor can athletes receive compensation directly from their university based upon their athletic achievements. Because the NCAA still intends to maintain its amateur sports status, paying athletes for their play on the field isn’t possible." So, you're paying for use of their name, image or likeness, and you can't pay them for games played, school attended, grades achieved, etc. Getting an offer may have some contingencies, but I think that once signed, enforcement is limited to things like did they sign autographs, do photo sessions, film ads, or allow use of their name on jerseys.

"guy" with Hunter gone next year and his girlfriend lives in NOVA (so him being away from family has a counterbalance). Vocal "fan" impatience is toxic for young players trying to learn on the fly and develop confidence (i.e., MJ and Sean). They both deserve a lot better than they get from parts of the Hokie "fanbase" and I hope that will ease up as we head into NIT play and a critical off season.

on court in Cassell for a while. Cattoor has had a back thing on at half time of the Notre Dame game and a couple of them were sitting straight legged on a mat at half time recently. They play through a lot, so we need to ease up on these guys and the coaches.

Was hoping they would show it on scoreboard more, but I could stream it on my phone and they overlapped.

She said she appreciates what the Hokies have done for women's basketball and I found it refreshing that she cares about the game so much to focus on our growth in her postgame. Tomorrow will be interesting as there is not as much revenge factor with Miami.

but they are still pretty far from the tournament building. I read somewhere that you can go inside building in front of ADA parking and get help if you can't walk that far, but I did not know that last year. There are ramps up next to that building and you will come in on concourse level that has ADA seating. I was just surprised how far I had to walk to get to the actual court facility and back.

My email from VT on 2/20 said I would get them 10 days before tournament start. Can't find them, so thought I'd check with others before calling school in the morning...
