What do you think of my hare-brained idea of going to 128? First round
games are at the home courts of the top 64 teams. 1 hosts 128, 2 hosts 127, and so on. After the first round, rank the 64 team field 1-64, and resume a format at regional sites like we have now.

Thanks for the candor in your response. All basketball aside, having met or
having been around around Coach Greenberg on a few occasions, I didnβt find him very warm or engaging. And I liked him and I agree that he was one of the better Hokie basketball coaches ever. Just made me wonder about the potential personality clashes.

GC, if you care to comment, wasnβt the Greenberg firing more of a
personality conflict between he and Weaver more-so than a true job performance issue?

This weekend was a classic case of playing down to an opponent. Everything
was going great and we had these two βeasyβ games over the weekend. Time to
refocus and win this Clemson series. Then on to the ACC tourney and beyondβ¦

Agree on the stater reference. This roster so far will be relevant for who
finishes, not necessarily for who starts.

Agree. And Clement is the wild card. Slow playing him to (what looks like)
full recovery may end up paying a big dividend or two in post season.

Not surprising. But hasnβt every high school recruit that Duffy has signed
in her two years been a top 100 recruit? I know both this year are. From the portal this year, both Tennessee recruits were decorated high school kids. Sometimes ranking are boosted by big numbers. Thatβs not us this year. Two top 100 high school kids and two solid portal kids and a portal project are not enough to move the needle.

I posted earlier in the year that baseball is a long game. I think that
Szefc protected Stieg early in the season and Renfrow to a lesser extent. Eisenreich started early, had down time, then came back as a reliever until recently reclaiming the third starter role. Renfrow and Stieg are flourishing, at their best the past few weeks. Eisenreich was really good today. Freshman Ethan Grim was forced into seven weekend starts and struggled. He was very good in relief today. Crowl regained some of his past form and Swift emerged as a lock down closer. Several guys have pitched well situationally, too. Ethan Ball has matured and is on a tear. Cook came out of a monumental slump and has been very hot. Szefc has settled on our best hitting line up and things are good. And the most important point of all is that we played a brutal early schedule early that still has us with a good RPI. The late season schedule is a much more manageable slate. Lastly, winning, just like losing, is contagious.

I have asked this question a couple of times in similar ways? If we find a
portal kid or two that would come if we had more money, can Mike Young legally contact a friendly donor and take a check if the donor wants to contribute? Would that violate the terms of our current retaineeβs or portal signees who may have accepted their offers within the budget we had at the time? Hopefully, no players or others know exactly what anyone makes, or what the budget is, because that could be a cancer. This is a perplexing situation to understand because there donβt be seem to be many rules but we seem to be bound to a defined ceiling-no matter what.

Yep. Iβve been posting about it for a few weeks. He has one or two more
college years- I think two. We need to find a way to keep him- no ifs and buts. Jake Marciano got poached last year by Auburn. Can you imagine how much better we would be with Marciano starting with Renfrow and Stieg? A lefty to go with those two righties.

Not to get ahead of this year- which could still end up very positively-
but is there any way Tech can hang on to Ethan Ball? He has to play two more years of college baseball (I presume) but the chances of him being poached by big dollars has to be very high. I know baseball is a bit different than the other sports but we lost a freshman starting pitcher to an SEC school last year. Ball has to be one of the freshmen in the country. Can we keep him?

Money will decide like in most cases. But beyond that, he can have a lesser
roll on a big stage or a bigger role on a lesser stage.

Exactly. Similar size and numbers but with three years of experience. The
one advantage Gurdak would have offered was potential and his potential went some where else. And I desperately wanted to keep Gurdak and I highly respect him,

I thought that I had seen TCU mentioned as a finalist. I could definitely
be wrong there. Sykes could be the proven scorer we are looking for though.

Canβt outbid TCU but we can maybe offer him a bigger role. Any chance at
all David, or are we a long shot/pipe dream.

Not sure if you have ever coached softball but do you really expect there
there never to be off days in a 50-60 game schedule? Do you ever have a sub par, or bad day? There are ups and downs in every teamβs season.

Thanks Will. I am appreciative of what they are posting. Wish there was
more. I am more interested in seeing what we can bring in than disparaging what left.

Tight βteamsβ are hard to come by when the roster is new every year.
Hopefully, both have found a better fit for their skillsets. I always felt that Baker should be shooting at least ten threes a game but she shot a lot of turn around jumpers in the lane. And never looked comfortable doing it. She was a good soldier, imo, but I canβt blame her for wanting to fling it from the perimeter in her last season. I think she can score 500 points this season and likely will.

I would appreciate any and all info on kids we are interested in, kids who
might be visiting, or any rumors (even) of who might be one of the five or six guys who we will add to put a roster together. I honestly think the core plus Atak is solid and promising. I guess Iβm not as interested in hearing about all of the woeful BS. Another serviceable post, a couple of lengthy wings who can shoot and play a little defense, and a decent combo guard and we could be pretty good. Not top five or six good, but as good as this year.

Haha. I always have said that if Scot had marketed Angela as well as Denny
did we would have a couple of national titles. I know you know what Iβm talking about.
Softball Board

And you may know, Midlo, that the old ACC format was a single game and a
doubleheader. On more than one occasion, as I remember it, Angela pitched all three games and threw every inning. Imagine throwing both ends of a double header with only a 30 minute break in between. She was not a big kid but she was amazing. Although she played in 1A at the time in high school she had 17 consecutive shutouts one season.

Probably a stupid question. Is there a scenario where Tech has a chance to
land a really good portal player, doesnβt have the budget, but has a donor that might be swayed to put up the cash? I donβt want to name a particular player but this would be a guy who would be a βsure thingβ if there is such a thing. Do we have any supporters/donors who might say βnow youβre talking, Iβll invest in that?β I guess this would be a question for an insider. I would think it would take a call from Mike Young to say if I can get βthis guyβ for βthis priceβ would you be interested in helping out?

If there really is such a thing as the law of averages we may eventually
get a break in the new world order. Hope for the best.

I know a bit about all of Appoβs pitchers, past, present, and future but I
donβt know why they always have so many good ones. My theory is their proximity to Liberty University and pitching coaching there. Maybe someone with knowledge can confirm or deny that possibility.

Me too but I want a rim protector to give us some insurance. UVAβs guards
got beat quite a bit too but they didnβt pay a big price like we did because of the blocked shots. I know we canβt afford a stellar shot blocker but a decent one would help.

Spin it! Two headlines I read recently: UVA Retains Four Core Players From
Roster. Virginia Tech Loses Six Players to
Portal. Got to learn how to spin it, Hokies. Marketing begins now!

Remember the times when a guy like Cornel Parker could start 78 games for
UVA (in this case)and average less than seven points a game? He was on the floor as an alpha defensive player, rebounder, and role player. Pure toughness and a winner. We need some of those types of guys. In our (VT) case, a Jamon Gordon would be nice.

No info but he seems like he would be a fit for South Carolina, Tennessee,
or Wake Forest. If any of them want him. Iβd take him if we could get him.

Apparently UNC canβt afford her either. But they can afford Baker? Maybe
there is something at play beyond money. Like fits- position and otherwise, with a lot of these moves.

Great numbers. Not a stat on this list but didnβt I read that we are very
high nationally in doubles? Now thatβs a big run producer.
